<CanoeBerry> Middle School is awful young, who will mentor?
* satellit__  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> Great-looking robotics / 3D printer ambitions, but..
<GeorgeH> To get turned on kids knowledgable about xo's seems good. They only want 2 , seems good to me
<CanoeBerry> Who can mentor please?
<sandrat> proposers are middle school ? is that what u r sayin
<CanoeBerry> Yes, middle school seems to be a situation where mentoring will be critical.
<sandrat> I'm not good with robots, maybe Alan P would do it?
<CanoeBerry> Vote!
<dristi> This is a father son team from reading the RT...one XO is for each of them. The CP proposal was quite well thought out and detailed
<CanoeBerry> +1

<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Our project`s primary aim is to empower citizens in developing country
<CanoeBerry> by making use of micro-journalism as a tool where they can use XO
<CanoeBerry> machines to record and communicate data with other parts of worlds
<CanoeBerry> without involving complicated interface , meanwhile they can even
<CanoeBerry> start micro-blogging with a easy to use interface , all of the above
<CanoeBerry> activities inevitably help them earn a livelihood by working as a
<CanoeBerry> micro journalist
<CanoeBerry> I vote -1 until much more explanation is provided.
<CanoeBerry> This proposal is wonderful in its ambitions, but remains incomplete
<dristi> This proposal says nothing about children...mission appropriate?
<CanoeBerry> Shipping address is missing, despite my requesting it.

[ PROJECT #5 - Omaha Laptops Promote Creativity - Nebraska ]

<CanoeBerry> Please all critique/mentor/vote for Project # 5 here:
<CanoeBerry> Omaha Laptops Promote Creativity - Nebraska
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=59820
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 20 XO's over 15 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> A. To give economically poorer elementary students computer experience.
<CanoeBerry> Many children in the neighborhood where I live do not have computer
<CanoeBerry> access
<CanoeBerry> at home, and limited access at school. Elementary children in particular
<CanoeBerry> are beginning middle school and high school with less technology
<CanoeBerry> skills than
<CanoeBerry> the middle income students in the suburbs.
<CanoeBerry> B. Helping the middle income and affluent students become mentors to the
<CanoeBerry> students listed above. These students would also be leaning about class
<CanoeBerry> distinction within their own community.
<sandrat> need a few specifics on cambridge item, u r going to fast
<sandrat> david harries ticket has nothing in it yet. wud be good to get some more info
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: this meeting will be a very fast one -- several of us have to go to DC ASAP!
<sandrat> ok
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: Project #4 was a past "employee" of OLPC, proven.
<CanoeBerry> You mispelled his name FYI, but generally don't use names here to protect privacy, unless the applicant has agreed we can publicly use their name.
<CanoeBerry> Back to Project #5 here.....
<dristi> They are asking for 20. Do we know them? Is anyone volunteering from their group or willing to? It looks like maybe this needs to be deferred and encouraged first?
<CanoeBerry> -1
<CanoeBerry> dristi: I agree.
<sandrat> project next wud approve 2 to do background work
<sandrat> at least to start
<dristi> someone should encourage them to get involved with Support Gang first...
<dristi> -1
<CanoeBerry> OLPC is not about basic/background "computer literacy"
<CanoeBerry> The applicant needs to learn more about OLPC's mission, starting in places like:
<CanoeBerry> http://laptop.org/vision
<CanoeBerry> Please vote.
<sandrat> 20 to begin with before planning seems like a lot, start with 2, prepare then 20
<sandrat> deferred
<GeorgeH> seems like one or two to become familiar, get on support gang, and develop a written plan
<CanoeBerry> Personally I'm not prepared to provide 2 free laptops until the applicant gets in sync with OLPC's goals.
<CanoeBerry> Consensus please?
* torry_loon  has joined #olpc-meeting
<sandrat> agreed.
<sandrat> defer

[ PROJECT #6 - Promoting XO 1.5 in BC - Surrey/Vancouver, British Columbia ]

<CanoeBerry> Thanks all and let's all critique/mentor/vote for Project #6 here:
* Umber-Red-92  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> Promoting XO 1.5 in BC - Surrey/Vancouver, British Columbia
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=59906
<CanoeBerry> http://www.intobiiz.com/ekiic.htm
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 2 XO-1.5's over 6 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Presenting and Promoting and Providing OLPC as an option to school
<CanoeBerry> districts
<CanoeBerry> for families and children of 6-12 years in these communities at three
<CanoeBerry> phases:
<CanoeBerry> 1- Surrey District SD36 (with 67,000 students with 40,000 elementary
<CanoeBerry> students) : Short term
<CanoeBerry> 2- Greater Vancouver (with approx 200,000 students) : Mid Term
<CanoeBerry> 3- Province of British Columbia Canada (with 300,000 students): Long
<CanoeBerry> Term
<CanoeBerry> Note the above Project (#6) is unusual, but we have a longstanding relationship with the applicant, who is working hard, experimenting with the newer advocacy work OLPC/Sugar's community can do.
<CanoeBerry> I'm personally in favor of 1 XO-1.5 when inventory comes available.
<dristi> This looks like an important growth opp. I have a ? does the business office-of bigger sales ever provide the samples in cases like this?
<sandrat> I like this project.
<sandrat> Real plan, business strategy of sorts; seems together
<sandrat> +1
* frommyxo Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (Ping timeout))
<CanoeBerry> A qualified +1 for 1 single XO-1.5, or XO-1.5 B2 prototype machine.
<GeorgeH> I'm concerned about the down side if OLPC is represented poorly
<CanoeBerry> Agreed.
<CanoeBerry> Let's conclude Project #6 here now, thanks.
<CanoeBerry> Please all vote.
<Umber-Red-92> This is Sonya Sokolow (Umber-Red-092). I'm new to this kind of online meeting. I am reading what is being put on my screen (about Project #6). I can't say anything yet because I'm not sure how this process works. Also I do not know the projects yet, other thatn the one I am working on with Ghana, Africa, and the one I submitted yesterday for USA Alternative Education.
<GeorgeH> reluctant +1
* torry_loon  Quit (Quit: S'later.)
<dristi> I have no objection but That's why I asked about the business office. Can you refer them to Miami?
<CanoeBerry> dristi: The business office in Miami is not about grassroots/community outreach.
<CanoeBerry> Which is what makes this proposal so challenging to judge.
<sandrat> - they are a business - seems like they have a reputation to keep up, so I say yes
<dristi> 40,00 then 200,000
<dristi> sorry typos
<CanoeBerry> A thousand miles journey started with the first step.
<CanoeBerry> Let's conclude if we can now.
<dristi> I have no objection +1
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> TENTATIVE APPROVAL for 1 XO-1.5 or XO-1.5 prototype.

[ PROJECT #7 - Improving computer literacy, Age 2-6 - Bonn, Germany ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #7 -- let's all please critique/mentor/vote for:
<CanoeBerry> Improving computer literacy, Age 2-6 - Bonn, Germany
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=60109
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 2-3 XO's over 24-36 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Since I am working as an official day care father in the city of
<CanoeBerry> Bonn, Germany, I recognized the interest of young children in
<CanoeBerry> getting in contact with computers. As "normal" computers are not
<CanoeBerry> suitable for young children because of their lack of sturdiness,
<CanoeBerry> especially for the very young ones, the OLPC-XO seems to be the
<CanoeBerry> perfect machine.
<CanoeBerry> I would like to evolve concepts for young children education
<CanoeBerry> (age 2-6) in the spirit of Seymour Papert.
<CanoeBerry> Inspiring perhaps, but proposal needs more meat.
<CanoeBerry> I would recommend (1) mentoring and (2) http://eBay.com for starters.
<CanoeBerry> Votes? Objections?
<GeorgeH> i don't see the contribution to the olpc community in this application
* unmadindu is now known as unmad|away
<CanoeBerry> Indeed.
<CanoeBerry> Let's conclude voting on Project #7 here.
<dristi> also 2 year olds usually bang on the keyboard and freeze the XO
<dristi> -1 for now
<GeorgeH> -1
<CanoeBerry> -1 until mentoring & resubmitting of a more complete proposal
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> DEFERRED

<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_az_Repair
<CanoeBerry> [SITE LINKED OFF http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Repair_center_locations ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests (up to 10?) broken and refubished XO's over undetermined months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> We can take in broken computers for parts, we also need up to 10
<CanoeBerry> working xo laptops for testing and supporting the XO community.
<CanoeBerry> +1 with a mentor
<GeorgeH> If they have a track record +1
<CanoeBerry> Applicant is extremely ambitious and connected, and will go places building a Phoenix Arizona XO/Sugar community if she patiently moves her planning forward -- without overcommitting.
<dristi> If their charges will be in the spirit of helping OLPC like Ian does...+1
<GeorgeH> would Luke be willing to mentor?
<dristi> my only concern, not knowing them is that it is a repair shop...probably charges standard fees...affordability?
<dristi> But the US needs more of this and more people who can explain repairs!
<CanoeBerry> Let's find out this weekend in DC if Luke/others might mentor beyond: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Disassembly . How about: 3 broken XO's 1 XO-1 and 1 XO-1.5 prototype?
<dristi> +1
<CanoeBerry> For starters.
<GeorgeH> let'
<CanoeBerry> Start slow & build it up -- agreed.
<GeorgeH> +1
<CanoeBerry> Final vote for 3 broken XO-1's, 1 working XO-1, and 1 working XO-1.5 B2/prototype

<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..

[ PROJECT #9 - OLPC/XO use in the USA - Santa Cruz, California ]

<CanoeBerry> Final Proposal of the day now!
<CanoeBerry> Please all help critique/mentor/vote for Project #9 here:
<CanoeBerry> OLPC/XO use in the USA - Santa Cruz, California
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=60138
<CanoeBerry> http://www.internetmathtutoring.com
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10 XO over 36 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> This proposal describes the implementation of Internet Math Tutoring for
<CanoeBerry> alternative-school students in the USA. The technology will bring
<CanoeBerry> individualized math tutoring instruction to students. In this way, math
<CanoeBerry> teaching specialists can supplement the local teacher(s) in
<CanoeBerry> disadvantaged areas and in sparsely populated areas without having to
<CanoeBerry> transport teaching specialists to the areas.
<CanoeBerry> Internet Math Tutoring will offer:
<CanoeBerry> -- laptop XO computers (on loan) connected to high-speed Internet, for
<CanoeBerry>       individual students;
<CanoeBerry> -- appointments between tutor and students will be implemented through
<CanoeBerry>       Google online;
<CanoeBerry> -- a video uploading facility hosted at a low fee by a video platform
<CanoeBerry>       (http://www.blip.tv);
<CanoeBerry> -- a presentation facility similar to Power Point but open sour
ce, no
<CanoeBerry> fee.
<CanoeBerry> -- a web conferencing organizer online, no fee with ads (See
<CanoeBerry> http://www.vyew.com)
* ghunt Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF))
<CanoeBerry> Will the applicant (she was here 10min ago!) please introduce this work?
<Umber-Red-92> I'm still here. I am Sonya Sokolow, the applicant. Please guide me as to what you want me to explain.
* GrannieB  has joined #olpc-meeting
<dristi> I can ask a ?. It looks like you are asking for XO 1.5's and intend to use them with Ubunto, correct?
<CanoeBerry> Umber-Red-92: we do not have masses of XO-1.5's to give way :)
* manu__  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> Nevermind masses of XO-1's... but please clarify how you will use XO-1's if they are provided.
<CanoeBerry> Where are the kids and what Sugar Activities or otherwise will be developped?
<dristi> It intrigues me to know if the 1.5 will actually work for what you propose. Can you start with 1 or 2 and get it working and share with the OLPC community how to do this so others can gain from this project too?
<Umber-Red-92> Yes. I have already started a similar project with Ghana , Africa. I am using Ubuntu because Sugar doesn't run the flash player that I need for 2-way video and audio and interactive whiteboard.
<GrannieB> Hi I forgot it is Friday. That's what happens when you're retired. Sorry :) What project is this?
<CanoeBerry> #9, the last one of the day!
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB: please review http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=60138
<dristi> I haven't seen a 1.5. Are you thinking it will work with Ubunto, or just run flash as you need?
<GeorgeH> if 2 way video is part of the inventigation, I say +1
<dristi> George for how many?
<CanoeBerry> Note that there are 3 very serious projects involved 2-way video and Sugar..
<GrannieB> Just did. Not sure the XO is the best choice for this.
<Umber-Red-92> If OLPC can produce a Fedora capable of those features I would use that Fedora or Ubuntu or whatever can run simultaneous audio, video, and whiteboard. Right now, I have only found VYEW.com which is based on Flash and Gnash doesn't run it. If a Sugar equivatent works, I'd use it instead. In the meantime, with my SD card, I can use my XO as I describe.
<CanoeBerry> Separate video-chat development projects include: RIT (Rochester Inst of Tech), http://seeta.in in India and the original/Australian: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Video_Chat
<dristi> I am thinking I will have to abstain from voting. As the technology is a bit over my head, and I am still not clear if the request is for XO1.0 or 1.5.
<CanoeBerry> We need that clarified now.
<CanoeBerry> Is this application for 10 XO-1's?
<Umber-Red-92> Are these projects at a level of development where I can actually use them for interactive work?
<GeorgeH> seems to me that 4 or 6 would get the development process going. Then additional units could be based on results
<CanoeBerry> Motion for 5 XO-1's ?
<GeorgeH> +1
<Umber-Red-92> I'm ok on 4 or 6 XO's to get started here.
<CanoeBerry> Other votes? Objections?
<dristi> abstain
<GrannieB> Will this service be free to the students? I notice your fee is $60/hr
<CanoeBerry> Sorry?
<Umber-Red-92> I am not charging a fee for my development work, nor for my online contact time. I am trying to make this project work for the future of math education over the Internet. It must use video, voice chat, and interactive white board. I can also create videos.
<GrannieB> I followed the link to her web site
<GrannieB> http://www.internetmathtutoring.com/
<GrannieB> is this the project we are reviewing?
<CanoeBerry> Got it.
<dristi> but would your students all be private tuoring paying students? even with free on line contact?
<dristi> tutoring
<CanoeBerry> Umber-Red-92: will students be able to start their own tutoring businessed
using your system?
* tabs  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> Let's conclude!
<dristi> and how will the video, voice chat and white board results be shared for use by the greater OLPC community? This for me is a key point
<Umber-Red-92> The website describes Internet Math Tutoring with the student's technology, whether it be laptop, desktop, windows, etc. I want to establish math tutoring for students who don't yet have the necessary technology. I want to do this in developing countries and in the USA for disadvantaged students as well as for alternative education programs.
<CanoeBerry> Motion on the table: 5 XO-1's -- what will we (the OLPC Community) expect in return, by summertime?
<GrannieB> will the students be charged for the service?
<Umber-Red-92> I will create a blog similar to the one I have created for the Ghana project: http://www.internetmathtutoring/olpc. This blog has had almost 4000 clicks since it was created.
<Umber-Red-92> No charge to the students for math tutoring on the XO's
<dristi> OK thanks!
<GeorgeH> experimentation with various forms of remote tutoring seems worth supporting +1
<CanoeBerry> Most reasonable.
<CanoeBerry> Applicant's past work has been steadily published: http://internetmathtutoring.com/olpc/
<CanoeBerry> +1
<CanoeBerry> Let us conclude now please!
<GrannieB> I came in too late on this to commit. I'll abstain.
<dristi> nd I abstained
<CanoeBerry> How this project will align with OLPC's 5 principles we should consider going forward:
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Core_principles
<CanoeBerry> http://laptop.org/vision
<CanoeBerry> Final Objections?
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> APPROVED FOR 5 XO-1's
