An XO certificate could be a variant of XO giving where the donator had decided to use the money for an XO laptop in the future but not just now. An XO certificate could be offered in addition to a normal donation without delay.

The motivation for delayed funding could be that the donator thought the money had currently better applications than a laptop or that the laptop was still too expensive (a view that may depend on the intended recipients) and should come down to (e.g.) $100 first.

For the OLPC Foundation (or another issuer) the motivation could be to increase predictability of donations and to motivate donators, who may not yet be interested, to commit to a combined scheme.

A certificate could have a duration of 2, 5 or 10 years and could possibly be shortened or extended according to recommendations by the issuer.

[edit] Models

  • A certificate could put the money into a fund for School partnerships#kiva.org and allow the donator to lend the money to applicants. This model may be attractive as a gift (e.g. for teenagers) to promote responsibility. Contrary to standard kiva.org the money would not be refunded but used for the laptop at the end of the certificate duration.
  • A certificate could buy shares of an OLPC investment fund for the certificate duration and be used for a laptop at the end of the certificate duration. The unused interest yield could be used to buy good gifts, Unicef supplies or similar gifts in an OLPC Shop.
