Protocols describe the syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of families of messages that may be exchanged between the nodes in a network. Different protocols exist for the purpose of creating communications channels with different sorts of desirable properties like reliable message or stream transmission, flow control, error detection, confidentiality, integrity, availability, etc.
