This article exposes one aspect of the much broader topic - browser-centric applications.

Not wishing to rehash the decision to make the XO a primarily Python/Traditional Desktop focused machine,I never-the-less feel that a browser-centric focus might be more appropriate for the 21st century.

Connectivity is poor in the developing countries, but it is rapidly improving. Browser-based applications will blossom as connectivity improves, traditional desktop applications will not. Let's give the kids tools that anticipate the day when internet access is universal.

Google Gears is a JavaScript based tool... JavaScript is the lingua-franca of all browsers. Let's give them a matching JavaScript focussed server (so they don't need to learn multiple scripting languages) and see what happens.
