<myselfhimself> hello
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: are you requesting a secondary review of any post proposals?
<myselfhimself> I'm a 5th (=last) year IT engineering at ECE Paris, a french IT engineering school [19:16] <myselfhimself> I'm looking to make an End of Year Project (EYP) of ~one month long full time with a team of 4-7 students (we are 3 so far, and the remaining students we will find in the school)
<CanoeBerry> Caryl: welcome Angelinas..
<Caryl> Hola!
<CanoeBerry> myselfhimself: merci et bonjour
<myselfhimself> is that possible to have some project mentoring for our kind of projects ?
<myselfhimself> the project period will in january to february sort of
<sandrat> not sure what your question is. Don't know if the Mark's team was approved for more laptops. Have been working this week.. not on line much
<CanoeBerry> myselfhimself: have you applied to OLPC's Contributors Program? If so we try to assign you a Community Mentor.
<CanoeBerry> During these Friday 2pm Eastern Time meetings here..
<CanoeBerry> But we must begin now! Eliot has been patient.
<sandrat> bonjour myselfhimself
<myselfhimself> we/I can gather students with skills in embedded systems, computer science and telecommunication+networks
<sandrat> which project is yours
<CanoeBerry> Great.
<myselfhimself> I have no projects yet
<cjb> sandrat: he doesn't have a project yet
<cjb> I pointed him here to learn about how they work :)
<CanoeBerry> We will start with Eliot's project review now.
<EliotM> Mine is to deploy laptops to Mafi Dove, a rural village in Ghana

[ PROJECT #1 - Deploy Laptops to Mafi Dove, Ghana in early January 2010 - Ghana & Massachusetts, USA ]

<CanoeBerry> Please help us now advocate for/critique the following Project #1 of 2 today:
<sandrat> greetings Eliot
<CanoeBerry> Deploy Laptops to Mafi Dove, Ghana in early January 2010 - Ghana &
<CanoeBerry> Massachusetts, USA
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=49565
<CanoeBerry> http://www.cs.umass.edu/~moss/ghana/ [NEEDS A LINK FROM
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 4 XOs over 2-4 months
<myselfhimself> I've there are wiki pages for Software and for Hardware ideas on the OLPC france wiki... but didn't read them sorry
* thundering-light (i=75c5015c@gateway/web/freenode/x-dqfbbldssqwynctv) has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> 1) Make computers available to middle school,
<CanoeBerry> and eventually primary school, students in Mafi Dove, Ghana. Develop
<CanoeBerry> sustainable teacher training and support plan. Assist in integrating
<CanoeBerry> computers into the school’s education plan. Initial deployment would
<CanoeBerry> outfit a “lab” with around 10 laptops and provide laptops to relevant
<CanoeBerry> teachers, with a few backup units in case of failure. Depending on your
<CanoeBerry> recommendation, we could also outfit a classroom in addition to the
<CanoeBerry> “lab”; this would require an additional 20 units.
<CanoeBerry> 2) Determine next
<CanoeBerry> steps when we visit, namely how and when to expand to all students in
<CanoeBerry> Mafi Dove (would involve perhaps 200 units)? How to provide training and
<CanoeBerry> tech support on an ongoing basis? What are the indigenous resources in
<CanoeBerry> Ghana? What can we do versus what needs to be done by OLPC or other
<CanoeBerry> agencies? How and when should we provide Internet access (this first
<CanoeBerry> visit will not attempt that)?
<myselfhimself> we have one idea and I can propose it here, otherwise if you have ideas for us to implement , I'm ok to forward to my other teammates
<CanoeBerry> 3) Get a sense of how this could
<CanoeBerry> eventually expand to more villages in the area, and involve students
<CanoeBerry> from UMass as an ongoing service-learning course.
<CanoeBerry> Note: We 5 are leaders of a small Episcopal church in Ashfield, MA
<CanoeBerry> (except Nell, who is Susan’s daughter and our person very experienced
<CanoeBerry> with the village and area). This is not an evangelism project, but
<CanoeBerry> strictly mission/service to the children and families of this rural
<CanoeBerry> village
<CanoeBerry> EliotM: would you like to lead us on a short introduction of your work/plan?
<thundering-light> A bit late...sorry.
<EliotM> We said 4 laptops; that is for immediate use in getting us ready; wht we're really looking for is more like 15
<CanoeBerry> thundering-light: we know you lit that fire.. your username is evidence ;)
<EliotM> Ok -- We're going to Ghana for a week in early Jan.
<sandrat> I'm interested in the relationship of your church group with the community, as that is your base.. and do u have relationship with school already?
<thundering-light> CanoeBerry: Whats the link?
<EliotM> Yes, we have a relationship with the village and school already.
<EliotM> Someone from our church was in the Peace Corps there -- helped get water, latrines, and build the school.
<CanoeBerry> aside: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/12-dead-in-Jaipur-oil-depot-blaze-Deora-says-fire-to-die-down-on-its-own/articleshow/5178960.cms
<EliotM> Our team also includes a retired school principal and 3 computer professionals
<thundering-light> nah...forget that...still on fire:)
<CanoeBerry> thundering-light: back to business.. agenda here: http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/devel/2009-October/026058.html
<EliotM> We want to outfot a lab with 10-15 XOs and get a few in the hans of the teachers; this is at the middle school
<EliotM> It has grades 7-9, with 15-20 per grade; thay also have a primary chool, K-6, about same per grade
<sandrat> sounds good: what do u see as the stages for this project.
<CanoeBerry> EliotM: if you could describe quickly your team -- and their roles.
<EliotM> 1) get ourselves ready in the next two months; 2) deploy the lab, or the lab plus one classroom in Jan 2010
<EliotM> 3) plan marger deployment to rest of school (anouth 150 or more XOs)
<sandrat> is there any work done already to prepare the teachers or school?
<Caryl> if we give you some Contributors Program machines, will you be able to get the funds to do your planned expansion?
<EliotM> Team: I am a PhD in Comp Sci from MIT *and* the minister of this church; we have the retired school principal, who has been
<EliotM> to the village; her daughter was in the Peace Corps there and can get us there, help with culture and logistics
<EliotM> Plus we have two computer professionals, one experienced in general deployment in the US; he is also training as a nurse practitioner
* TMarques (n=57c422e0@olpc.osuosl.org) has joined #olpc-meeting
<sandrat> What is the input from the community to date
<Caryl> Do you have specific plans as to how the laptops will be used with the students?\
<CanoeBerry> Can you address Sandra's question about teacher training / learning facilitation ?
<EliotM> Not much work done yet to prepare school; we are not yet clear how we would raise funds to outfit the rest of te school -- maybe a couple of clasrooms at a time, looking for money through the church and through my computer science colleagues
<TMarques> Hi all, only saw the e-mail just now
<EliotM> I hope eventually to bring UMass students into this as a service learning thing
<sandrat> If you have teachers who have had some introduction... know what they are getting into first; then the next step setting up a lab is a great way to get started
<CanoeBerry> Could be great -- if you or your church have the resource to coordinate these students.
<EliotM> We are just now working on our training plan and how the laptops would actually be used -- it might be more of a lab that they go to initially
<CanoeBerry> So you request 4 XO's to scope out such training/planning?
<thundering-light> what about tech support?
<sandrat> Maybe u should start with a small number and get the teachers engaged and do some planning for more and fundraising from that point
<sandrat> same as CB suggestion: get teachers/team built -then expand to more laptops
<EliotM> Yes, 4 XOs right now, but we are really going in January -- have the tickets and everything, so have more, or being able to get them quickly would help -- or knowing that we need to fundraise for any we bring to Ghana is I guess helpful
<sandrat> I could help with what u need think about for funding resources
* EliotM (n=47e9dfcd@olpc.osuosl.org) Quit ("CGI:IRC (EOF)")
<CanoeBerry> Oops, we lost our proponent.
* EliotM (n=47e9dfcd@olpc.osuosl.org) has joined #olpc-meeting
<thundering-light> as everywhere..
<sandrat> I will mentor if I can get a ticket reminder by email..
<CanoeBerry> Can we begin to gather Opinions/Votes on how to help Eliot's project?
<EliotM> Somehow dropped off and just rejoined, so I may have missed some Qs
<CanoeBerry> All set.
<Caryl> Would you have access to an XO lending library stateside to help with planning and fundraising when you get back?
<sandrat> I would vote for a small number - 4 - 6 to start
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: plz "take" this ticket now.. http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=49565
<EliotM> I don't know about lending lib. We have one XO I borrowed from a colleague.
<Caryl> I would vote for 4 to take with and maybe 2 for working here if they can't get any somewhere else.
<EliotM> I am also in touch with Maryanne Ward who has deployed to another part o Ghana, though she's been on travel so it's been brief yet
<CanoeBerry> EliotM; what are specifically are you hoping to share with other community deployments & beyond?
<CanoeBerry> Short term blogging?
<sandrat> ok. I took it
<CanoeBerry> Longer term deliverables?
<thundering-light> I vote for ..erm...4, maybe?
<EliotM> We can share about how to do this through a church about culture in Ghana; about how to get undergrad computer scientists involved, when we get that far
<CanoeBerry> Let's conclude.
<CanoeBerry> Please all vote.
<sandrat> +1 for 4 laptops
<thundering-light> +1 for 4
<Caryl> +1 for 4
<EliotM> Yes, of course we will get the word out by blogging/web page; longer term I would hope for some more how-tos written down
<CanoeBerry> +1 for 4 XOs if the applicant takes blogging seriously -- both during the planning process to reach out and bring folks in, as well as later.
<Caryl> how-tos are good. also how _not_ tos
<CanoeBerry> Minimal outreach/blogging OK, but a public/social face is a requiement for CP.
<CanoeBerry> *requirement for Contributors Program
<myselfhimself> [excuse me, where did you put my case in your projects to review list for this chat, to help myself organise?]
<EliotM> It's in our interest to get the word out through church and academic circles, and blogging is part of that I expect; is there a particular place you want such a blog to appear?
<CanoeBerry> EliotM: Any public blog would be great!
<thundering-light> should be a good blogging/wiki platform... Or maybe...keep us updated?
<CanoeBerry> Just create a nice link from http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects so the world can find it.
<CanoeBerry> Final objections?
<TMarques> nope
<CanoeBerry> Calling once...
<thundering-light> Nope:)
<CanoeBerry> Twice..
<EliotM> Ok -- we have wiki support t UMass, so that's not a problem, and I've already created a wiki page on OLPC for this from which to link
<thundering-light> Don't call thice...
<CanoeBerry> APPROVED -- thanks Eliot.
<thundering-light> *thrice
...

<CanoeBerry> helping us gather ideas and scenarios on the pedagogical front at this
<CanoeBerry> juncture.
<myselfhimself> CanoeBerry: what's your plan for projects review ? can you pm this to me ?what's my ranking in it?
<CanoeBerry> 3. Deducto, activity to improve deducing logic skills -

<CanoeBerry> myselfhimself: did you email a full project proposal to contributors@laptop.org ? If so let us know your 5-digit project number.
<CanoeBerry> If not, please review the requirements here...
<thundering-light> quite enough and large links:) How we gonna open all of em? Joking:)
<Caryl> I see they are asking for 3 XO 1.5s Would it be to much to ask that they also try to get the Activities to work on the 1Million+ XO-1s already depolyed?
<EliotM> Thank you all; I'll look forward to contact from sandrat; I'm signing off since I don't feel qualified yet to vote on other proposals
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Contributors_program#FAQ
<CanoeBerry> EliotM: bye and try to say hello in person later in Nov/Dec please.
<sandrat> EliotM: I wouldn't mind coming to western ma to meet u
<CanoeBerry> Nancie Severs may be able to review in person her (somewhat) similar Vietnam work here:
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects/Vung_Vieng_Fishing_Vietnam
<Caryl> Am I cut off again?
<sandrat> good idea
<CanoeBerry> thundering-light: can you introduce/advocate for the India work for us?
<thundering-light> CanoeBerry: eh?
<CanoeBerry> Would you care to?
<thundering-light> Yeah...
<CanoeBerry> Manu being a your mentor, perhaps you can mentor some of his crew in return.
<thundering-light> Right...would love it;)
<CanoeBerry> All please help critique the above 6 sub-projects.
<CanoeBerry> And whether they require 3 XO-1.5 B2 prototypes as requested.
<sandrat> an impressive bunch of projects; i'm still reading
<thundering-light> I see all of them run on XOs...Reading...
<Caryl> thundering-light are you anywhere near Gujarat?
<thundering-light> Caryl: Somewhere ...Corresponding State: Rajasthan.
<thundering-light> just north of Gujrat
<sandrat> some serious development challenges: shared editing of spreadsheet!
<Caryl> There will soon be a 100+ private deployment in Gujarat ... XO-1s only.
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: EliotM: to clarify above -- everyone is welcome to come back here and submit additional proposals to OLPC's Contributors Program here, for additional free XO units -- if you document strong ongoing work/results sharing.
<TMarques> the proposals seem very good, do they have some XO-1s?
<CanoeBerry> Yes
<CanoeBerry> Not sure how many.
<thundering-light> Caryl:Excellent... Adam...activities work on xo...at least the spreadsheet do;)
<sandrat> Support for these projects and the design is impressive.. whatever they need I think we should support
<TMarques> so, at least two 1.5 XOs seem appropriate to test everything out, not sure about the third though
<TMarques> but seems reasonable
<sandrat> Is the request for just 1.5s
<CanoeBerry> Yes. How do we feel about TMarques counterproposal? (2 XO-1.5's)
<Caryl> Did you say they already have XO-1s?
<sandrat> that means these already are running on 1s
<thundering-light> sandrat: And what I said above? ;)
<Caryl> Can they develop for both (would be nice)
<CanoeBerry> Applicant (Manu) began working for OLPC years back, so yes they have XO-1's.
<Caryl> Just curious, will iTunes require $$$ to buy songs?
<TMarques> also, the 1.5s should help them develope faster, depending on extensively they're using the machines, the XO-1s may be somewhat slow to test with and may hinder development
<sandrat> ok sorry... they all run on XOs... ok ... 1.5s requested... 3 is fine with me
<TMarques> are they asking three to have one per developer?
<thundering-light> Caryl:Off topic...might require...don't have one.
<CanoeBerry> "3 XO-1.5's for 6 developers"
<thundering-light> TMarques: Looks like it...but there are seven..i think.
<thundering-light> CanoeBerry: 7
<CanoeBerry> Let's conclude with your favorite of the 6 above? And specific recommendations for the India team.
<TMarques> more than a reasonable proposal I would say
<sandrat> +1 for six
<CanoeBerry> (6 sub-projects above)
<Caryl> Also curious (but important) will these programs require a lot of propriatory software like Flash or be able to work on OS?
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: six on not on the table.
<yabasta> Caryl, sorry, I missed out on most of this, but itunes is dependent who the uploader
<CanoeBerry> *six are not on the table
<yabasta> so there is a lot of free itunes content
<CanoeBerry> XO-1.5's are in extremely short supply
<yabasta> *who the uploader/creator/distro is
<thundering-light> .Caryl: I don't think so...
<Caryl> is that yes they will rely on Open Source?
<TMarques> newspaper, ebooks and video chat look great to me
<CanoeBerry> Let's finish now.
<sandrat> CB: what do you recommend for the number of 1.5s
<thundering-light> Caryl:Yes..
<CanoeBerry> They request 3, I will consider that if the group here has studied Manu's proposal and believes they are needed.
<sandrat> How hard is it to develop w/ Sugar on a Stick.. must have limitations
<CanoeBerry> I hear no objections.
<Caryl> SoaS has a lot of limitations at the present
<sandrat> Having the hard ware is important for these apps. Let's give them 3
<thundering-light> Erm.. No ...no objections from me...
<CanoeBerry> Mentors are however needed.
<Caryl> +1 for 3
<thundering-light> +1 for 3:) +1000 for a mentor:)
<TMarques> +1 for 3
<CanoeBerry> thundering-light: can you or any talented people you know provide quality mentorship?
<thundering-light> CanoeBerry: Dunno
<yabasta> +1 for 3...even though I missed out on half of this convo. but from what I've read I have no issues with
<thundering-light> Might try...
<CanoeBerry> Around even just 1 of the above 6 Delhi projects.
<yabasta> so feel free to disregard my thoughts on this
<CanoeBerry> Which would you consider?
<Caryl> perhaps someone from SugarLabs could help
<CanoeBerry> Call it a wrap: APPROVED

* yabasta Quit ("The real secret of magic is that the world is made of words, and that if you know the words that the world is made of you can)
<myselfhimself> thundering-light: ok thanks yes if you can now
<thundering-light> Yeah..I can now;)
<myselfhimself> ok thanks !
<thundering-light> okay,....
<myselfhimself> so I can gather between 4-7 students with different skills (majors) : embedded systems, computer science and telecommunication+networks
<thundering-light> Go on...
<myselfhimself> we are all in 5th year after high school = our last year in IT universitity
<thundering-light> you sent a proposal to contributors AT laptop DOT org?
<myselfhimself> we want to do something for a projec that's relevant in terms of helping/developing the world
<myselfhimself> no I sent no proposal
<thundering-light> okay...first of all....
<myselfhimself> so we thought about olpc and other projects
<myselfhimself> so here's our first project idea
<myselfhimself> but we don't know if it's relevant for you
<myselfhimself> here's a google doc
<thundering-light> Won';t harm trying;)
<myselfhimself> http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AW_vwxki-LP3ZGNzcnRqM3RfMjEyZGR0NjdoZnE&hl=en
<myselfhimself> just look at the first figure if you prefer
<myselfhimself> it's in french but should be understandable for english speakers
<thundering-light> got it;) thought I don't know french:)
<thundering-light> You can carefully(or carelessly) plan a proposal of these ideas...and send us a list of your goals.
<myselfhimself> the idea is to have a box that takes video into wifi/ethernet as input and outputs that into a TV plug
<thundering-light> and...?
<myselfhimself> this would allow any olpc laptop to stream video to a tv screen in the room
<thundering-light> There is an activity for the projector screen already...not TV screen, though...here's hwat I suggest:
<myselfhimself> ok
<thundering-light> 1.)Plan a proposal
<thundering-light> 2.) Collect more ideas and plannings
<thundering-light> 3.) get your goals... and the need of the project(pretty cool, really)
<myselfhimself> (just in addition, there's a server in the middle which can take the wifi video stream too, and record everything... it can also send by wifi any video that it's stored in a VOD fashion to any OLPC laptops around and to the "magic wifi TV box")
<myselfhimself> thundering-light: ok for that mail to write / process
<thundering-light> 4.) Then, mail them to us at contributors@laptop.org ...we'll see what we can do..and tell us if you need any assistance...
<thundering-light> myselfhimself: Okay...you are pretty young, as it seems to me?
<myselfhimself> though... do you know of very hot requirements/needs that people have on the field that my future team could implement/prototype in january ?
<myselfhimself> I'm 22
<myselfhimself> we'll all be around 22
<thundering-light> okay...Not right now exactly...You need to join the meeting.
<thundering-light> I am 14...:)
<myselfhimself> ok
<myselfhimself> cool
<myselfhimself> which meeting ?
<thundering-light> contributors meeting...like the one going on some time ago...okay. you are saying that the server would store any transaction of video and bits?
<myselfhimself> yes
<myselfhimself> so that it can play that pack as VOD
<myselfhimself> so that OLPC laptops don't need to store recording of their screencasts or camera recordings
<thundering-light> okay...this is one plus point..
<myselfhimself> students could record a demo of their work... like on youtube people show how they do something... this could be the same for the whole class
<thundering-light> OLPC XOs need to be connected to the server and screen?
<myselfhimself> no
<myselfhimself> I mean
<myselfhimself> they are on wifi/ethernet LAN if they want to interact with server / screen
<myselfhimself> I must go sorry
<thundering-light> oh...Right..
<thundering-light> Just mail it..
<myselfhimself> I keep this chat log around
<myselfhimself> ok
<myselfhimself> thanks for your support
<thundering-light> welcome;)
