OLPC for Philippine NBN Project

--142.164.177.1 JANUARY 16, 2008 From James in Canada - I would like some feedback on my thoughts re: OLPC and the NBN Project:

In 2007 the Philippine government's Department of Communications DOC was engaged in a nation wide project called the National Broadband Network (NBN). Work on the project was suspended due to some political issues. The President, Gloria Arroyo (GMA), has mandated that the Philippines will engage in a nation-wide ICT program to provide the access for government agencies to IP based services by deploying a national broadband network.

Wouldn't it be great if the proposed NBN program mandated that a rural education component must be included as part of the NBN deployment and that ICT access, as well as deployment of XO laptops was the deliverable for that component?

In other words, this proposed nation wide broadband ICT build would not only give government agencies in all parts of the Philippines access to IP based services, but would importantly require providing OLPC devices (XO laptops) to school districts in the provinces where education is so very important in order to break the level of rural poverty.

I would be interested in knowing if OLPC has a mechanism to initiate this sort of program? My interest, having worked on a large scale digital network build in the Philippines in 1998 (the TelicPhil NDTN project http://www.fujitsu.com/ph/casestudies/ndtn.html ) would be to assist with the project planning and project management requirements on a voluntary basis.

The Philippine Cyber-Education Projector google it was supposed to address this (using satellite Internet, standard computers, diesel generators, etc...) but it too was also stopped by the government.
I have only so far been able to talk with local DepEd and other elected officials IRT the XO-1 vs Intel

I'm also waiting for someone to lend me an XO-1 to demo it to Conressman Milaflorez down here in Aklan. see also OLPC_Philippines_Unang_Liwanag

James, canada, January 25, 2008. Thanks Mike for the reply and associated links to your project. When you say you are looking to have someone lend you a XO are you in conversation with someone in the Philipiines with a laptop? My G1 laptop has yet to arrive here in Saskatoon or I would suggest a short term 'loan' to get things going. Keep me in mind if you are still looking for a XO in late February by which time my laptop shoudl have been devilvered. Paalam.
Thanx but shipping from Canada and back would probably? be expensive, and more so on the return trip (import-export duties, taxes, insurance?)
I've had a couple of promises from Luzon (I'm in a wait&see stage since 1st of December)
RE: Everybody (including most shipping/parcel-post) were busy over Xmas and also then Kalibo's 796th Ati-Atihan down here, not to mention my land line was out for several weeks, cellphone kept saying <no signal found>, and along with a sporadic Internet across RP, .... :)

I hope to be in Cebu City in early April. Will try to contact you then. Regards, James S. I hope to CU here w/your XO-1 then ;} FYI: My landline phone number and address is posted on my User page, and it's a five minutes away from the Kalibo Internatonal Airport and about a 45minute drive to Boracay Island --222.127.228.7 08:55, 6 February 2008 (EST) Chief Mike my place @ wikimapia

Hi Chief Mike, good news ;>) - my XO just arrived in Saskatoon. I have a few days to get familiar with it and them I will pack it up and bring it with me. Will be in Manila on April 6 and am now planning to travel to Kalibo on Thursday April 10. I will call you from Makati unless you post here before April 4 with any updates. Cheers, James S. 28/03/2008 @ 18:54CST.
Sorry you caught me at a bad time on the phone last week as I have a bad ear infection and was taking a nap when you phoned from Boracay... and also I had an appointment with the Kalibo-SB town's counsel(Demo-ing another XO-1 that I received on friday in the regular mail w/Php35.00 total handling fee) at the scheduled meet-up time with you. But anyway, many thanx for coming to Aklan, hope you had a good vacation here no sunburn:) And showed off your New-Mochine 2 any and all.

No problem and it was a pleasure spending time on the island. Met some great people but alas no one had actually heard of the OLPC Phil projects. Your work is very much in demand. My 7 year old daughter is progessing very well with her XO. Having been schooled on Windows based O/S PCs for the past 2 years I am very pleased that she is finding her way around the XO with ease. And we just worked out the WAP-PSK security issue - which actually was not an issue as it appears out G1G1 laptop is compatible with WAP-PSK without having to downlaod the latest software. Again, sorry to have missed you. Let me know if there is any way I can assist your work from Canada.Cheers.

Too many EDIT tags

I am personally annoyed by too many EDIT tags which are automatically placed by MediaWiki. -- moreover, the tags are highlighted in bold. I suggest that we avoid to use the tags for headers as this makes MediaWiki autoplace all the EDIT tags. I suggest we use other means. Let's say, bullets maybe? or simple highlights of bold. -- Creek23 10:06, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Folks it would be neat to talk to

Foundations

There is no branch of the OLPC Foundation in the Philippines. Please do not use that [trademarked] name. --Sj talk 16:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Your use of that name is in violation of our international trademark; please stop using it. --Sj talk 23:28, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Thank you.

It is preferred that participating groups refrain from any claim or phase 'only' in reference to an registered organization type in the Philippines as this is a community wiki not the place for competitive arguments.

eKindling Inc, a group currently listed on this page also is registered with SEC.
Kindly, also respect other active organisations playing a role in the Philippines OLPC initiative such as eStudyante (P&G) and associated partners. -- Meaton talk 8:53, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Could someone please add more information about eStudyante (P&G) and other groups to the page? --Quozl 00:02, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Lubang contacts and involvement

There seems to be misunderstanding about who has been involved in work around the Lubang pilot. Charles has claimed close involvement, but only at the start; eKindling has asked not to be associated with him and is now maintaining the pilot.

Charles, please explain here on the talk page what you feel your involvement with the pilot has been, and what your new organization aims to do. This wiki is a fine place to talk about active grassroots projects, but not an appropriate place for personal promotion.

Ryan and Mitch and others working with Lubang, please update this page as well when you can. --Sj talk 22:16, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Here's an email archive from the OLPC_PH mailing about Meg. Mitch and ekindling team in PH (Joel & Tessa).

http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/olpc-philippines/2010-July/000910.html

Some wiki post that personally communicated by Meg Simpson to post in Lubang wiki. Like the NCC list of donors.

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/EKindling/Projects/Remote_Pilot_Deployment_in_Lubang

Project Milestone -- Mafe

eKindling works through community collaboration, main reason why some of eKindling members did not agree on working with Charles Chen as his idea is to create a foundation but not an organization. Its decision is not solely by one person it's the community, no one in the group is demanding for recognition it's a team effort and eKindling right now is run by volunteers. -- Mafe

Mr. Charles Chen claims that he should be part of the pilot. If he can in list here what he did for the deployment aside from few meetings he did with Meg Simpson(NCC former employees Representative) to represent his own idea and his own organization he's very much welcome. But not to mislead people in this wiki for personal promotion and personally communicating (emailing them individually) with some people who are interested in helping with the deployment. An introduction cannot be counted as work. ---Mafe

Plz. we need somebody to step up and stop this wiki editing war with Charles Chen and if he demands recognition this is not the right place for him, as the team are one, that ekindling is a community education project. --- Mafe

I am reading the comments made here for the first time and I now understand where Mafe is coming from. I simply had not done nothing of value for the Mindoro pilot and as such do not deserve to have my name mentioned at all. Unfortunately, I disagree but I am willing to let you win the argument so that we can move on. - Charles

Reduced Clutter

Please keep news about the pilot on the pilot's own page.

Please keep news about Philippines on the OLPC Philippines own page.

Please keep contact details and group specific news on each group page.

Thanks. --Quozl 00:03, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Some edits continue to demonstrate competitive behaviour between individuals representing two non-profit corporations. This looks ugly, and is bound to affect your donations. I suggest you avoid competitive behaviour.
I have one specific question though about the 2012 deployment text which begins "February 2-4, 2012 mark a milestone" ... are these 550 laptops in addition to those mentioned in the 2011 deployment, or are they the same laptops? If they are the same laptops, then I shall move the text to a pilot or deployment specific page. --Quozl 01:36, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I have searched on sec.gov.ph to verify the claims made on the page. There is a ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD (OLPC) FOUNDATION, INC., an EKINDLING INCORPORATED, but no COFP, no CHILD (Children Helping in Information and Learning & Development). What is the registered name of this CHILD organisation? --Quozl 22:49, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Hello its Charles. I will accept whatever changes you will make as appropriate for this purpose for as long as it is applied to both groups. Thanks.
In regards to the name of COFP the name change from the original name One Laptop Per Child Foundation is pending approval with the SEC and should come out shortly. We have not used the original name due the previous issue you had raised. --User:Ideasman
Thanks. What is the exact spelling of the new name submitted to the SEC? I'll move the PCOLPC page. --Quozl 00:01, 6 March 2012 (UTC).
The proposed name we have submitted is CHILD OLPC Foundation Philippines. I suggest we don't move the page until the approval comes out which should be shortly. The SEC may make subsequent changes when it approves this. --User:Ideasman
