Peace corps has 28 volunteers in the Girls’ Empowerment and Education sector, which oversee the day-to-day operations of 22 Girls’ Mentoring Centers (GMC), which serve over 1000 female secondary school students across the country. The GMC initiative is quite specific to Peace Corps Mauritania and is a cornerstone in our approach to supporting girls' education and schooling in a country where 50% of the girls enrolled in the first grade will not make it to the seventh (or the first year of secondary school) and only 73 girls out of 1000 will get a diploma enabling them to secure decent employment. Girls' retention and graduation rates in secondary and higher education represent a serious challenge for the Government of Mauritania. |

For this reason we will also look to incorporate some open source learning tools for the Linux platform. The most common local language in Mauritania is called Hassaniya, a dialect within the Arabic language family. Schools are conducted and taught in French and Modern Standard Arabic. All three of us have basic knowledge of French and we will be relying on local contacts and other Peace Corps Volunteers for help in communicating with the children and the community. <br /><br /> |

We will involve local teachers and volunteers in the process from the beginning and make sure that after the 9 weeks are finished they are able to teach children on their own and help the children as required. We will encourage the children to keep using and exploring the laptops while also making sure that the elder children are prepared to help the younger ones continue to learn in the future.<br /><br /> |

I say that because is all about team work and involving Peace Corps volunteers, the local community and the kids. So we hope our team grows as we go on. |

Jennifer Rose Lin: Senior Industrial Engineering student with plenty of experience in the community service field. She has traveled to China, Peru with various organizations. |

She also spent a summer working for the Lymphoma and Leukemia society. She is very enthusiastic and helpful no matter what kind of service. |

Roshan G. Chandiramani: Senior Industrial Engineering student with experience in a professional fraternity, social service organizations and as a community adviser at Georgia Tech. |

He is smart and genuinely helpful. He was the first one to actually convince others to form a team. |

Arhant Durlabhji: Senior Industrial Engineering student with some corporate internship experience, hates it. Doesn't want to do 9-5 job and loves to work for a humane cause. |

Family runs a hospice for the terminally ill in India, arhant is a permanent volunteer. Providing good education for kids and opening a orphanage in India feature on his bucket list. |

We have been in contact with representatives of Peace Corps Mauritania and will continue our communication after the project is over. We have also learned that the Internet is accessible in Mauritania through USB modems and we would like to examine the possibility of using the Internet in helping to teach the children.<br /><br /> |

We would like to help fund this project after our initial work is done and for that reason we will contact the Student Government Association and the Alumni Association here at Georgia Tech. These associations have long traditions of funding such initiatives and we are optimistic of their support for this project as well.<br /><br /> |

Who: We are a group of three undergraduate Industrial Engineering students from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta with aims of making a positive influence while educating ourselves.
What: Our NGO will be Girl’s Mentoring Center which is under the Ministry of Education. We plan to work with children of two schools in Mauritania. Both these schools are for girls and they are being served by Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs), our local partner organization.
