:The xo/sugar was proven to have accelerated learning especially among the secondary school learners who could access knowledge in various subject areas such as biology, physics and chemistry. The Primary school pupils were able to disseminate knowledge on Hiv/Aids as well as learn mathematics. The hands of charity team were able to generally improve the attitude and performance of the students toward various subjects namely, sciences , mathematics and Hiv/Aids. They were able to enrich their learning experience as well as accelerate learning in a rural setting.

# They were able to learn mathematics in a more practical way and this helped them to gain more interest and have a change of attitude hence better performance
# Some of the students had never known what a laptop looks like, this opportunity was given to them through the project
# The secondary school students were able to access information on the science subjects through the Wikipedia.
# Th photography and video activities gave the students the opportunity to develop a team spirit which is essential for the learning process.
# The write activity also gave them skills on how to generate and store knowledge for future use.

:Despite the limitations the hands of charity team were able to create time out of the normal schedule to ensure that part of the scheduled curriculum was covered. The team was however able to communicate and ensure that the information was passed on.

:PRELIMINARY REPORTS ON EVENTS OF PROGRESS OF XO LAPTOP PILOT PROJECT IN BUKOKHOLO PRIMARY SCHOOL BUNGOMA WEST DISTRICT-APRIL & MAY 2010
:''Learners using xo laptops to interact with orphans/people living with hiv/aids condition.
8th-12th May , 2010''
::This was very exciting moments for our learners when they visited Alicia Children Centre. The learners had been prepared to use write activity, record activity (taking photographs, short video and audio sounds) on the XO. These skills were handy during the 5 days of visit to the Centre. Thirty pupils took part interacting with 90 orphans and learners. They sat in groups of 4(1 visitor with three hosts). Our learners took time to interview the orphans one at a time.
::The learners were assisted in recording stories narrated by the children in the centre on audio and video. The orphans were so happy when they saw the photographs that were taken and when they saw their own faces on the XO monitor or screen.
:: The learners had created poems and songs containing HIV/AIDS messages, encouraging words that were recorded on the XO and replayed. This was very energizing for the orphans. These recorded messages will be discussed in our regular classes for awarenesss purposes. They will target more children.
:: The chidren who did not go the centre will have an opportunity to look and hear the messages on the XO during classes. We are targeting more children and youths in hospitals, churches, mosques and other schools when we receive more laptops. We shall take time to analyze the work before going to other places.
::Bungoma West District has about 50 schools that have heard about XO laptops progamme and want to be reached by this program and be involved. Thanks to OLPC contributors Programme and our mentors. At the close of this term, we will make plans for the next development of XO programs for these schools.

They will take more time here because they are trainig on reading and writing skills in order to communicate efficiently.
With beginners,are still on the write activity,using Keyboard,starting the XO,shutting down,editing text,
Problems:More students with fewer XO LAPTOPS,Slow pace of learners since have never handled a computer,Teaching English language to the pupils before using it consumes a lot time since it is foreign language in rural area, busy support group, lack of enough finances for upkeep of team members,

Plan of Action

HOC Team Member at Work
1. Develop a curriculum and program that can be implemented using the features of the XO and by collecting browse able current material relevant to HIV/AIDS.
Schools in Kenya have recently introduced lessons in life skills, specifically for HIV/AIDS. The predicament is that there is a big shortage of teachers to utilize this time maximumly especially in the rural areas where our project will based. The schools are willing and welcoming to external support.
2. Schools and groups in the rural areas will be given the first priority. We will start with Bungoma and Busia Districts. A similar programmme will be extended to the neighbouring schools, civic, fFaith-based groups and NGOs according to available time.

3. The team has studied the objectives of the school curriculum and designed lessons for learners based on the objectives of the curriculum of HIV/AIDS.
4. We will visit people living with AIDS,orphans, widows to take pictures, videos and tape the stories on XO that will be watched and listened to during lessons. The nearby health centres and hospitals with AIDS patients will be appropriate for us to get information to be stored on XO for our lessons.
5. The objective is to concretise the information on HIV/AIDS by use of videos, pictures, diagrams some drawn by the learners themselves on the XO laptops..It is noted that most of the information delivered to students in schools is abstract and teacher- centered. XO technology will provide an interactive, concrete and learner-centered approach that is motivating to the learners.
6. The leader and participants will also organize for training of teachers in various schools on the use of XO laptops in order for them to support in teaching using XO technology. Some weekends can used for this training.
7. Actualization of the program using an XO allows users to express their feelings in a safe place, where they have tools to write and create and communicate with their peers.

School Curriculum

  • First few lessons of implementation in schools and centres will be used to train and aid the learners on how to use and handle XO laptops.
  • They shall also be required to draw diagrams and paint using XO on materials related to AIDS.
  • Discussion and chatting using XO-Learners will take some time to exchange ideas at some distance on topics provided by specialists using interlink on XO.
  • Materials from wiki. The group will download information from wiki on internet on various topics as adviced by specialists in various organizations, stored on XO and then learners will use it in different sessions as guided by the participants in our group.
  • Faith-based group programmes-Youths,children and other groups’ programmes will be utilized to provide an interactive, concrete approach to HIV/AIDS education as opposed to abstract approaches provided by most groups.

Learning Activities

• Using the activity on the XO to write familiar information, question/ answer on HIV/AIDs.
• Taking and viewing video/ photographs
• Reacting to photographs/ videos.
• Recording and listening to stories.
• Drawing diagrams of organs/ Body parts, state of people living with AIDs.
• Charting with classmates using OX chart activities on issues of HIV/Aids.
• Use Wikipedia on the XO to find. Meanings and descriptions of words/parts and situations in Aids.
• Using games on the XO to socialize with friends/knowing about others.

Recording Sessions at Alicia Centre
PRELIMINARY REPORTS ON EVENTS OF PROGRESS OF XO LAPTOP PILOT PROJECT IN BUKOKHOLO PRIMARY SCHOOL BUNGOMA WEST DISTRICT-APRIL & MAY 2010
Learners using xo laptops to interact with orphans/people living with hiv/aids condition.

8th-12th May , 2010

This was very exciting moments for our learners when they visited Alicia Children Centre.
The learners were assisted in recording stories narrated by the children in the centre on audio and video. The orphans were so happy when they saw the photographs that were taken and when they saw their own faces on the XO monitor or screen.
The learners had created poems and songs containing HIV/AIDS messages, encouraging words that were recorded on the XO and replayed. This was very energizing for the orphans. These recorded messages will be discussed in our regular classes for awarenesss purposes. They will target more children.
The chidren who did not go the centre will have an opportunity to look and hear the messages on the XO during classes. We are targeting more children and youths in hospitals, churches, mosques and other schools when we receive more laptops. We shall take time to analyze the work before going to other places.
Bungoma West District has about 50 schools that have heard about XO laptops progamme and want to be reached by this program and be involved. Thanks to OLPC contributors Programme and our mentors. At the close of this term, we will make plans for the next development of XO programs for these schools.
