3. Objectives
Project Objectives: (WEB-PUBLISHED)
Concrete proposals with defined, measurable outcomes are much more likely to result in a laptop than "it would be cool to play with these and demo them".
Create a UV water sterilization lamp that attaches to a USB port on the OLPC and will last long enough to sterilize several liters of water on one battery charge. This has humanitarian implications as well as educational uses. It also promotes usefulness of the OLPC in regions where water quality is questionable and as an emergency response equipment in disaster areas. 4. Plan of Action
Plan and Procedure for Achieving the Stated Objectives:
1. Receive the OLPC. 2. Test the solar power acquisition of the laptop and its ability to recharge in Ecuador, where there are both sun and clouds in nearly every daily cycle. 3. Develop the UV lamp for sterilization, attached and powered by USB. 4. Post design and research steps (in more developed form) on the Wiki as progress is realized. 5. Acquire input from the OLPC wiki community in implementation and development of the device.
5. Needs
Why is this project needed? To purify water, and demonstrate UV sterilization for educational purposes. Locally? Same. In the greater OLPC/Sugar community? Humanitarian aid, useful in poverty or disaster stricken areas.
Outside the community? Provides publicity for OLPC and gives another use to the machine.
Why can't this project be done in emulation using non-XO machines? I have no funding to emulate on another machine. Why are you requesting the number of machines you are asking for?
Will you consider (1) salvaged/rebuilt or (2) damaged XO Laptops?
Either two rebuilt XOs or two new XOs to allow better assessment of power generation and use.
6. Sharing Deliverables
Project URL—where you'll Blog specific ongoing progress: Upcoming
Please web-publish this entire completed proposal, removing any sections affecting your personal privacy. Ask if you want help -- communicating with our OLPC/Sugar global community is core!
How will you convey tentative ideas & results back to the OLPC/Sugar community, prior to completion? By wiki, or by blog.
How will the final fruits of your labor be distributed to children or community members worldwide? Unknown. Philanthropist?
Will your work have any possible application or use outside our community? See Above.
If yes, how will these people be reached? Yes. Humanitarian Aid per [[1]]
Have you investigated working with nearby XO Lending Libraries or Project Groups? No. See the group referred to above for a possible collaboration.
7. Quality/Mentoring
Would your Project benefit from Support, Documentation and/or Testing people? Probably.
Teachers' input into Usability? No. This project is not necessarily software dependent.
How will you promote your work?
Publish research results for the wiki community, and coordinate to get the UV sterilizer support for production.
Can we help you with an experienced mentor from the OLPC/Sugar community? (WEB-PUBLISHED)
If YES: specify the kind of Ongoing Mentoring that will benefit you most. If NO: specify who will help you share your progress, creations & results.
Sure. I'm not sure. Just a Mentor to provide feedback as we go and maybe provide links to resources and/or people who can help us complete the project. 8. Timeline (Start to Finish)
Please include a Proposed timeline for your Project life-cycle: (this can be in the form of Month 1, Month 2, etc rather than specific dates)
Include a couple milestones, even if tentative.
Month 1: Acquire the XOs. Research of commercial UV bulbs that can be adapted for sterilization use. Research XO power output, as specified on technical datasheets and as demonstrated by the test samples. Research recharge time, solar recharging times, etc.
Month 2: Design of device. Early construction of a test device. Testing of various bulbs.
Month 3: Continued research and testing.
Month 4: Refinement and settling on a design.
Month 5: Build test devices according to new specs.
Month 6: Further testing and refinement.
Month 7: Review of project, assessment of goals and objectives and project progress.
Month 8: Possibly new research or design direction
Month 9: Possible new design built and implemented
Month 10: assessment
Month 11: field tests
Month 12: Compile research and publish device data.
