== Hey ==
Hey- Thanks for your help, it's refreshing to have some collaboration.

I'd like to talk to you more about the include tags you mentioned before. Those could prove to be quite useful.

Also, I like what you've done with the sidebar. Portions of it may or may not be temporary depending on how we decide to set up the front page. Walter and I had discussed setting it up like the main page of fr.wikipedia.org. I really like the organization going on there. Everything is right at your fingertips, and it's still very navigable.
I had a different approach than what they had though (I think)- My idea is to modularize the page into elements (or blocks, or cells, or whatever you want to call them). Say we categorize the entire wiki into a dozen super categories. Each category would have it's own template (or page, or whatever). That way the main page can be just an index of what blocks are included instead of a bunch of ugly html. Am I discovering something that's already in use? Is this a good/bad/superlative idea? Let me know what you think. Thanks! --[[User:Aburton|Aburton]] 18:39, 26 June 2006 (EDT)

== OLPCities ==
I received your comments. Thanks. OLPCities is an open project. Everybody (some anonymous...) can help, create content etc. etc. We hope that, in the future, we can use the MIT(?) OLPC server (I believe that there are one available) to upload all the material. Our server can be not good enought if we have a big trafic (we are optimist...). --[[User:Adamascj|Americo]] , 19 September 2006

== A question ==
Is there a preliminary list of [[new features]] I can review somewhere? From my point of view, getting a better idea of the [[Journal]], and more generally: how content will be deployed. For example can our software tie into the depolyment mechanism. So content that has been downloaded and is displayed in our software can reference other content that the student hasn't downloaded yet. --Scott C.
: How would you want to reference software on the network that hasn't yet been downloaded? There will be visibility of content on the mesh and server, at least via an index with basic metadata about the files. == Notes ==
Local copies of text with push updates, changes when others change. Personal wikis with small groups/clusters. Synch of pages across wikis. Diffs pushed to email servers, pulled down to rev control.

Songbird, etc for exposing, sharing music. Post-v6 IP sharing.
Version and data problems... doing away with net file systems.

Are my latest editions on [[Software projects]] in line with what you had in mind?

Also, what about all the other stuff at http://dev.laptop.org ? I'm retiscent to include some projects (ie: [http://dev.laptop.org/git.do?p=projects/linux-mm-cc;a=summary linux-mm-cc] and such) given their 'low-level' nature.--[[User:Xavi|Xavi]] 13:05, 19 February 2007 (EST)

==WiXi==
can [[Summer_of_Code]] be updated to include [[WiXi]] as candidate? sooner action will encourage better student proposals..

(last year [[Talk:Summer_of_Code#twext|twexter]] was included as candidate for SOC 2006, but on the very last day.. thus student proposals were weak.. this year proposals could be stronger if twexter/WiXi could be included sooner.. == Translation==
Hi, Xavi

please let me know how to add Korean translation to '''http://www.laptop.org/'''. The guideline says use PO file, but how to write it, PO file for Korean?

Thanks..

[[user:php5]]

== PO-file-naming-with-or-without-dashes-or-what? ==

They sure look ugly... I just followed Walter's naming convention... Personally I would've gone the sub-pages road... but that just swaps / for -... --[[User:Xavi|Xavi]] 01:01, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

== Update the translated content on the www.laptop.org ==
Hi, Sj

Thanks for making a user page for me. BTW, I've made the final review of the translations for zh-CN version of the web www.laptop.org with some corrections. Could you make them online? I think that it is controlled by the olpc team member. The translation works for korean and portuguese have the same problems. All needs full update. Thanks! -- [[user:ScottZ]] 05:05, 07 April 2007 (EDT)

== Obsolete Template ==

We sure could use a "obsolete" template to mark some of the more out of date pages, such as

* [[Flashing LinuxBIOS on A-Test Boards]]
* [[Building LinuxBIOS]]
* [[Upgrading to LinuxBIOS]]

And so on, and so forth. Thanks. - [[User:JordanCrouse|JordanCrouse]] ([[User talk:JordanCrouse|Talk to me!]]) 17:13, 11 April 2007 (EDT)

: There's one already: [[Template:Dated]] : <nowiki>{{dated}}</nowiki>
: Sorry to post here :) --[[User:Xavi|Xavi]] 17:42, 11 April 2007 (EDT)
:: Hmm - I'm not sure if thats exactly what I was looking for. I mean, the LinuxBIOS stuff just isn't out of date, we've purposely killed it. We don't want to leave doubt in anybody's mind that this information is still even remotely valid. The information should only remain for posterity. I'm thinking that an <nowiki>{{obsolete}}</nowiki> template would say exactly that, and possibly provide a link to the newer information, if it exists (i.e - LinuxBIOS pages would link to OpenFirmware pages) and such. - [[User:JordanCrouse|JordanCrouse]] ([[User talk:JordanCrouse|Talk to me!]]) 19:13, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

== Portal idea? ==

Hi! I've been (playing) with the idea to restructure the [[OLPC Spanish America]] page and turn it into a [[User:Xavi/Portal|sort of 'Portal' page]] (which if works fine, maybe we can move it to the 'english' side).

BTW, this is just me playing with DIVs so the 'content' is not really thought out... My hope is that having some clear cut first level division of the content will propagate and help the structure throughout the pages and categories in the wiki....

Would it be too much to ask for your opinions on the idea and its (crude) implementation? Cheers, --[[User:Xavi|Xavi]] 14:54, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

== about Learning Outcome Statements ==
<div style="background-color:#fff; border:2px solid #fdb; padding:10px; margin:8px;">
About Learning Outcome Statements

LOS is somewhat different from the spirits of wikipedia or wikieducator. XO Korea hope to establish a standard learning outcomes for all educational courses, and for governments and business sectors also. The goal is;
* to set an uniform and standardized learning outcomes for children and citizens regardless of their nationalities.
* to establish an uniform and standardized web-based tests (or accreditations) for all courses, certifications (such as lawyers, doctors, and CPAs etc.), and licenses for all nations,
* to establish [[oea|Open Enterprise Architecture]] for worldwide programmers not to duplicate their coding works and to share software components and libraries,
* to provide raw materials (or data) for programmers (or software engineers) to code [[XO Korea/Sector Automation]], which shall automate a school, government, or business sector, and
* for children and citizens to be able to participate in educational, governmental, and business sectors directly via Python programming architecture.

So, the ultimate goal of LOS written here is for children to be a ''REAL'' social members, who can collect some modules (or software components) from OEA libraries to compose a ''Really'' working governmental or business sectors which they own.

LOS is not just a guideline for children or students to follow when learning something, but a base step to particiaption in the world, and I hope that participation to be Python programming not just for playing, but for achieving some real things such as public or private social activities.
</div>

All the content here will be moved/copied to the wiki of ''XO Korea'' when our presentation tour begins at the end of this month or in the next month. When moving/copying them, any content you think NOT matching to the goal of this wiki will be erased from here.

However, if you think LOS should be moved as soon as possible, and if you think LOS does not match to this site, I'll move it right now.

Please let me know your opinion. [[User:Php5|php5]] 18:43, 5 May 2007 (EDT)

: As there is no more opinion, I'll continue my work....If any, let me know anytime. Sincerely [[User:Php5|php5]] 17:51, 6 May 2007 (EDT)

:: I see, thanks for your opinion. As always, the eyes of others let me work along the road/rail. Anyway, this week will be somewhat busy for my farming and fishing job, and, as I'm the only one who can translate English-Korean in my team, one week or so will be ''very very very'' quiet for this wiki, due to my absense. Hi, it's farming season here.

As a farmer and part-time carpenter, I have been restoring a traditional Korean house (particularly, that of the Jeju Island), and maybe a few days later, the restructuring will be finished.

That house is much similar to XO..I'm sure you can't distinguish one from the other. Please see [http://a0002.tistory.com here] at this weekend, maybe.

== Hi, SJ. I'm php5 ==
It's a long time and I've finished farmking works for this season.

My fellows helped me prepare about 60,000 e-Government modules (services), and I hope to post them onto this wiki, each representing a complete governmental function. I hope that the e-Government will provide 70~80% the same service as those currently about 1,000,000 Kroean governmental employees provide, that it will be used by developing nations without educating hundreds of thousands of their future or potential governmental employees, and that developing nations will save money for their children..

Though I already have detailed list of governmental services and full descriptions of each service, which will be used to program via Open Enterprise Architecture, I have not obtained permission from the Korean government about disclosing all detailed information of the governmental functions. After obtaining the permission, I hope to start the world first open source e-Government program.

Anyway, for presentation tours in Korea (both South and North) scheduled long time ago, I hope to receive at least five (5) B3 or B4 machines this month; ten (10) machines are desirable. Though I have already sent mails and messages to Jim Gettys, Felice and some others, please help me persuade them to send us a few B3/4 machines if you have any chance to meet/talk with OLPC persons.

Sincerely [[User:Php5|php5]] 05:05, 6 June 2007 (EDT)

I was thinking sort of the same when I saw it :) Another alternative (probably that could be reused for what Laure is doing) is to have instead of 'embeding' the text in the template call, have the template embed a sub-page (ie: ''gamepage''/Screenshots)... and have a link to the embeded page (in lieu of the [edit] link for a section&mdash;see [[Template:Include Page]]). php5's message made me think - would it be possible to create a box (say, 5) of XOs for Jam loans? People could request the box for a week-long loan, so they can run a local jam... we could put a copy of the Jam Cookbook in there, and some (non-verbal, pictorial, or otherwise close-to-wordless) documentation on how to work the laptops in the box, the requestors would have to pay so many dollars for shipping and etc. but it would be an "OLPC Jam In A Box" and allow folks like Do Young-Min to hold their events without having to scrounge and borrow laptops from everyone within a 500-km radius. Could Google of Summer of Code create software to analyze DNA chips on OLPC? R language on OLPC?
I did my thesis comparing HIV and Human Genome at Los Alamos.
This could be used by health technicians and public health nurses to ID disease in the field.
The OLPC could then be used in Health clinics and schools to diagnose disease early.
Imagine being used in Darfur to diagnose Pneumonia (Viral vs Bacterial). What antibiotic would depend on the pathogen.
In Peace Corps I saw many kids die beause we did not know what pathogen (what antibiotic) to treat.

Immune Attack around the world - Carmen Sandiego video game

Doctors and medical personnel around the world are in a constant battle with microbes using immune response to counter them.
Could Immune Attack use a world map to allow students to tour the world trying to solve medical mysteries?
Examples:
Southwest USA - Several respiratory diseases which can overwhelm
the immune system. RSV kills babies on high altitude Indian reservations due to poor diagnostics and late treatment. Hanta virus kills adults due to poor diagnostics and late treatment.
Monitoring animal background populations and creating accurate diagnostics to detect infections could allow students to design rnai based vaccines.
South America - Cholera still can kill during earthquakes due to clean water disruptions. New edible vaccines in the form of bioengineered potatoes exist but better diagnostics in the field are necessary.
Africa - Polio, AIDS and TB cause continent wide devastation. Treatment monitoring of new antiretrovirals and anti-TB drugs require immune system monitoring and new treatment diagnostics. Monitoring animal background populations and creating accurate diagnostics to detect infections could allow students to design rnai based vaccines.
Asia - SARS, Bird flu and pandemic flu are linked by cross species infections. Monitoring animal background populations and creating accurate diagnostics to detect infections could allow students to design rnai based vaccines.
Each of these scenarios could allow students to apply Immune Attack skills to create microarrays for diagnostics, develop treatment (rnai vaccines, etc.) and see responses to their treatments. Could social resistance (Polio in Nigeria, Bird flu in Indonesia) and poor education prevent application of new treatments? Could viral and bacterial resistance arise?
Why is polio a high fidelity virus easy to vaccinate against,
while HIV is a low fidelity virus difficult to vaccinate for?
Could this game allow students worldwide to compete against each other in a track down that disease annual competition? Who in the world is the best diagnostic team, etc?
I worked in Peace Corps in public health treating AIDS patients
and malnutrition in the Caribbean. I later worked at Human Genome Project and HIV Genome Project at Los Alamos.

Mycin Blood Analysis AI - Immune Attack video game

Mycin was an expert system developed at Stanford in the 1970s. Its job was to diagnose and recommend treatment for certain blood infections. To do the diagnosis ``properly'' involves growing cultures of the infecting organism. Unfortunately this takes around 48 hours, and if doctors waited until this was complete their patient might be dead! So, doctors have to come up with quick guesses about likely problems from the available data.
and use these guesses to provide a ``covering'' treatment where drugs are given which should deal with any possible problem.
Mycin was developed partly in order to explore how human experts make these rough (but important) guesses based on partial information. However, the problem is also a potentially important one in practical terms - there are lots of junior or non-specialised doctors who sometimes have to make such a rough diagnosis, and if there is an expert tool available to help them then this might allow more effective treatment to be given.
Today culturing infecting organisms is being replaced with DNA chip anlalysis of viral and bacterial genomes. These microarrays have been developed to detect Avian Flu, SARS, etc.
Could Immune Attack create a Mycin like tool for students to simulate analyzing blood for possible pathogens automatically?
This could teach them how modern diagnostics works and how expert systems might be used in clincal settings.

AIDS Model for Immune Attack video game

Recent work in T Cell models might make an interesting topic for high school/college students. Using immune attack it might be possible to create a simulation showing the T cell regulatory system which causes AIDS. This also would highlight other autoimmune diseases (diabetes, asthma, allergies). Recent work in chimpanzees has shown their ability to regulate many immune responses to HIV and allergens human immune systems fail to regulate.
Human T cells respond much more robustly than chimpanzee cells do.
This may explain some major differences in susceptibility to certain diseases between humans and great apes. One example is the lack of progression to AIDS in the great majority of chimpanzees infected with HIV virus. It could also account for the rarity of T-cell mediated liver damage, such as chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis and cancer, following Hepatitis B or C infection in chimpanzees. In addition, several other common human T cell-mediated diseases, including bronchial asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes, have, so far, not been reported in chimpanzees or other great apes.
Humans and great apes share many similar genes however gene expression is different.
Using novel gene-array technology to measure the extent of gene expression in thousands of genes simultaneously, humans diverged from their ape ancestors in the last five million years, genes for transcription factors -- which control the expression of other genes -- are four times as likely to have changed their own expression patterns as the genes they regulate.
Could immune attack simulate gene expression microarrays?
Could students use mock arrays to diagnose immune response?
Microarray skills will be needed in the coming medical revolution.
This could lead students to investigate automated immune system monitoring, pharamcogenetics, etc.
Students with these skills will gain valuable understanding of immune system response and monitoring.
My Thesis "Computer Assisted Genetic Mapping" compared Human and HIV genomes at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

I am a former Science and Math teacher in NM.
NM Students need to be introduced to Science and Math at many different levels.
NM has problems recruiting math and science teachers.
NM has resources at the National Labs (Sandia and Los Alamos) that would make a state supercomputer center
available to all residents.
Second Life running on the Supercomputer during low periods of processing may be a viable solution to meeting
the needs of researchers and educators. Especially as the computer ages and is more available as an educational system. Could Kid Second Life expand into the ageing supercomputers from National Labs? Most are Linux systems.
Has Second Life ever licensed software for educational world creation? Do they have an Open Source server version?
Second Life is now used to simulate real world environments on the web.

I build and manage Unix clusters for State of NM DOIT.
How about placing the Kids Second Life cluster in Computing Applications Center at INTEL in Rio Rancho, NM.
DOIT manages the site for the State of NM.
Could the State of New Mexico create a virtual science lab on Second Life with Bradbury Science Museum (Los Alamos) and National Atomic Museum (Albq).

How about a Second Life for burn kids, NM students?
I have participated in a curriculum for STEM students at Santa Fe Community College (SFCC).
The 6th graders in local schools can take Friday afternoons at SFCC.
We offer 2 week sections on building video games, CAD/CAM, robotics, biotech etc.
Could Second Life for kids extend this STEM program to Web?
Do you have any suggestions for expanding the STEM curriculum
Here is the Build Your Own Video Game outline:

Making your own Video Game - Computer Camp
Taught at Wood Gormley Elementary and Santa Fe Community College
11/5,7,12,14/07 (3:00 -4:30 PM)- 12 5th and 6th graders
Kids enjoyed programming first in Scratch www.scratch.mit.edu for two days.
They were then allowed to view and use Alice www.alice.org and Unreal Demo.
The Unreal Demo was an unpopulated landscape of Unreal and documented in:(no violent characters)
http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Unreal-Technology-Level-Design/dp/0672326922
Math skills:
Day 1 - Kids were able understand the basics of 2D (x,y) game design with Scratch.
They learned cartesian coordinate system for Scratch.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system
Day 1-2 - They also were exposed to simple variables and algebra to move Sprites.
Day 3 - Loops and conditional statements
Day 3-4 - Alice taught 3D (x,y,z) skills and Object Oriented programming
Programming skills: Scratch
Stepwise refinement
Algorithm design
Collision detection
Loops (repeat until, infinite)
Conditional statements (if then)
Boolean logic
Programming skills: Alice
(all skills above)
Methods
Object programming
We may use Maya and Blender in the next section but how could we allow kids to enter 3D into Second Life?
Are there any good Demos for this level user?
Some tool (Sand Box) that would allow kids to integrate their objects into the complete world on a PC first
without entering Second Life?

== Wikibrowse? ==

Hi,

I can´t get WikiBrowse to run. I´ve detailed the experience on the discussion page... Am I missing something? Thanks --[[User:Tomhannen|Tomhannen]] 18:09, 3 December 2007 (EST)
: Try it again. the file at -8.xo was really v.5. WikiBrowse-8 should work on 64x. [[User:Sj|Sj]]&nbsp;[[User talk:Sj|<font color="fc9"><small>talk</small></font>]] 01:55, 4 December 2007 (EST)

== Add a bot flag to my bot ==

I am planning on running a bot, [[User:FireBot|FireBot]]. Currently, I am just in the testing stages, but I already have butted heads with the wiki's CAPTCAHA. So, to avoid this, and to make [[Special:Recent Changes]] not be flooded with my talk page archiver/auto-signer bot, can you add a bot flag to it? Also, what is the vernacular for replying on each other's talks? '''[[User:Firefoxman|ff]]<font color="darkgreen">[[User talk:Firefoxman|m]]</font>''' 16:48, 11 December 2007 (EST)

== e-Learning for Kids course downloaded for testing ==

Hi SJ
Can you (or your team) test our course on you XO (still waiting for ours):
It's on the Library grid as a content bundle. I created an entry for EFK.
Once this is OK we will put the rest of the courses on there tomorrow.
Think we need to create a 'launch' page.
What is required here. Any limitations, grahpics etc.?
Regards
AJ

== Wiki page size limit ==

Hi Sj
While editing Simplified user guide/lang-ru I came across an issue which as I understand deals with the limited size of a wiki page. When I exceed certain text length (64 kb as I understand) I can't save the page (I am using FF). Is there a way to fix it? Regards --[[User:Biarm|Biarm]] 18:29, 12 December 2007 (EST)
