* Step8 says: "(it's ok to leave the home view because when you go back the options should still be there)" The "should" is a problem. What if there's a power failure, wifi outage or the person cancels the install and the options are no longer there? What should they do? (That is, user closed the software update windows, no longer has menu, control panel, browse or terminal icons visible.) Since the old "frame" and applications are gone, there is no terminal icon... And since the user has never launched Control Panel before, it may take some fumbling to find it (probably only if user goes to shut down by hovering over the XO icon, which is what I did.) * The part about reconnecting to the network was not helpful in my situation, but I'm not sure if I should add a comment. In isolation without a compatible wireless network, I've always connected via a USB network adapter. However, it only initializes properly if it is plugged in when the XO is first powered on. Therefore, the 'solution' in my case was just to power off and power on, and then I could do Step 8 for the application software (of 37 updates). Evidently the update process disconnected the adapter, and any reboot short of powering down was insufficient to reinitialize the connection. |

Also, the factory update didn't really seem to wipe everything. At a minimum, it still knew my name after the re-installation. |

(The unfortunate reality is that I never got much use out of the machine, but I mostly bought it to support the project. Main problems were the keyboard and the general weakness for Japanese (but Japan was never a target region).) |

- Step8 says: "(it's ok to leave the home view because when you go back the options should still be there)" The "should" is a problem. What if there's a power failure, wifi outage or the person cancels the install and the options are no longer there? What should they do? (That is, user closed the software update windows, no longer has menu, control panel, browse or terminal icons visible.) Since the old "frame" and applications are gone, there is no terminal icon... And since the user has never launched Control Panel before, it may take some fumbling to find it (probably only if user goes to shut down by hovering over the XO icon, which is what I did.) 75.197.79.6
- The part about reconnecting to the network was not helpful in my situation, but I'm not sure if I should add a comment.
Main problems were the keyboard and the general weakness for Japanese (but Japan was never a target region).) Shanen 01:14, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
