#3 NACIF OLPC-Lending Library in Gomoa-Dasum District of Ghana / New York, USA
#4 Application - Turtle Art Curriculum Pilot - Needham, Massachusetts
#5 Gambia StartUp / XO-machines used as a tool to collect data for the District Health Information System, DHIS - The Gambia / Asker, Norway

[ PROJECT #1 - OLPC Ideas for Moshi, Tanzania Area - Virginia/Washington DC, USA ]

<CanoeBerry> Agenda: http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/devel/2010-January/027186.html
<sandrat> I read the Moshi project, not well enough defined yet. I'd mentor however
<SweetXOGrannie> which number is that?
<CanoeBerry> OK, Project #1 here -- please all help review/critique/advocate for:
<sandrat> first one
<CanoeBerry> 1. OLPC Ideas for Moshi, Tanzania Area - Virginia/Washington DC, USA
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=50418
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests (12?) XO-1.5 over 9 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> See referenced proposal [WHERE?]. OLPC input would be a major part
<CanoeBerry> of a sustainable, cooperative teacher capacity building effort in the
<CanoeBerry> Moshi,
<CanoeBerry> Tanzania area.
<CanoeBerry> Important: ask me if you need fuller access to the complete proposal above.
<sandrat> I didn't see anything off the projects page
<SweetXOGrannie> Long line of developers waiting for XO-1.5s Can they use XO-1s?
<CanoeBerry> They'd better!
<CanoeBerry> What do we conclude here for northern Tanzania (Moshi) ?
<CanoeBerry> The applicant has been very friendly, calling me from DC several times to tune irc when it did not work on his iPhone ;)
<CanoeBerry> But I don't see him here today?
<CanoeBerry> I feel like we need him present to fully understand his project.
<thundering-light> CanoeBerry: what was his irc nick? was that alpap?
<CanoeBerry> Not sure.
<SweetXOGrannie> Seems to be well intentioned but not well defined
<CanoeBerry> I vote to defer this proposal until we can understand it better.
<thundering-light> Someone was asking me for meeting over #olpc-help
<thundering-light> just minutes ago
<SweetXOGrannie> +1
<mafe> is this similar project as of Nancie?
<sandrat> they are talking about 20 schools and teacher capacity, but not plan as to how many, or a strategy to do it
<CanoeBerry> SeetXOGrannie: can you clarify your vote?
<SweetXOGrannie> wait for more clarity
<mafe> +1
<sandrat> is there already a mentor nearby in place. If so I'll just add my name as support
<sandrat> what are we agreeing on: ask for more clarity?
<thundering-light> dunno(unsure)--(we might need some more information from them)
<CanoeBerry> We seem to be unanimous--easy!
* Lerc  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> Objection to deferring 1 or 2 weeks on this Tanzania proposal?
<CanoeBerry> I'll be able to talk more by phone too.
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> CONCLUSION: On Hold
<CanoeBerry> Next!
<SweetXOGrannie> Their mentor should help them refine
<CanoeBerry> Yeah

[ PROJECT #2 - Small Solutions/Hands of charity @ Keongo School - Kenya / Newburyport, Massachusetts ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #2 now.
<CanoeBerry> Plz all help critique:
<CanoeBerry> Small Solutions/Hands of charity @ Keongo School - Kenya /
<CanoeBerry> Newburyport, Massachusetts
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=52890
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects/KenyaSmallSolutions_HOC_KeongoSchool
<CanoeBerry> http://hoclaptop.blog.com [NEED UPDATING!]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10 XOs over 4 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> We hope to make learning of Mathematics easier and more interesting by
<CanoeBerry> using the activities the XO laptop has to inspire interest and
<CanoeBerry> raise the average percentage mark of all the children by 20% by the
<CanoeBerry> end of the three months.
<sandrat> please try this url: http://hoclaptop.blog.com/2009/10/19/keongo-primary-school-pilot-project/
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: can you intro your latest work and recent progress with the Kenyan crew?
<sandrat> They spent since the summer working with the schools and introducing the XO to the teachers and classrooms
<sandrat> They have a plan now to bring a Mathematics curriculum in addition to the HIV/AIDS (which already has 10 XOs)
<thundering-light> I like their initiative.
<sandrat> they have schools with 400 kids and plan to recycle kids through two classes a day to begin with. More laptops means more kids get hands on
<SweetXOGrannie> Sandra, don't get upset, but they need to have lessons in hand before you start. Check project #4 for an example of the type of curriculum planning they need to have.
<CanoeBerry> This blog hasn't been updated since Oct 28, can someone in Kenya take charge
here, and who would you recommend?
<sandrat> Our np will be raising money for the staff working in the schools
<sandrat> Yes the blog has been updated
<sandrat> It has some funny behavior: try this http://hoclaptop.blog.com/2009/10/19/keongo-primary-school-pilot-project/
<SweetXOGrannie> Could you adopt/adapt the curriculum Olin plans to use?
<CanoeBerry> http://hoclaptop.blog.com does not show updates since Oct 28.
<sandrat> the blog is also posted on www.smallsolutionsbigideas.org/blog
* alpap (n=62d87dae@olpc.osuosl.org) has joined #OLPC-meeting
<sandrat> The page above is dated 10-19 and there are other pages
<mafe> so the main objective now of this proposal is more on deployment?
<sandrat> I have had the same problem of not seeing them sometime. I think I'll ask the team to just create a new blog and see if it behaves beteter
<sandrat> I'll look at his, and pass it on the Bill Mark Koech
<SweetXOGrannie> My comments got lost in the flood... please see above or I can send them again
<sandrat> There is a lot of good material. Alan Papert will be working with Mark
<mafe> sandrat: i guess the blog seems works fine ...the hoclaptop.blog.com ..they just need to be consistent on posting
<SweetXOGrannie> Right now the curriculum is too fuzzy
<CanoeBerry> What is this material and how will it be structured?
<sandrat> Olin .. yes we'll use what is out there and good
<CanoeBerry> alpap: can you elaborate?
<SweetXOGrannie> but if you fail to plan you plan to fail (old teacher's saying)
<CanoeBerry> Olin's efforts here: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Olin_university_chapter/Projects/Curriculum
<sandrat> He talks about specific math skills: I can copy and paste if you give me a minute
<CanoeBerry> alpap: Welcome Alan Papert, if you can pipe in that'd be great!
<sandrat> Certainly I will pass on good information, Alan and I will be communicating as well as another teacher from the CHelsea school systme
<SweetXOGrannie> but the skills need to be linked to the XO Activities with plans for using them
<elsa> I'm not sure our curriculum would be suitable for the stated goal of the project - it really depends on what kind of math they're learning
<CanoeBerry> I 2 questions in a minute when elsa & SweetXOGrannie are done.
<sandrat> He talks about specific activities with Turtle and the little programming tool what is it
<alpap> I am trying to get a closer contact with Mark to make the XO contribution more specific
<SweetXOGrannie> just take a look at Olins proposal #4 and see if it is something they can use
<SweetXOGrannie> they were very broad... not specific about type of math sounds like they need everything
<CanoeBerry> alpap & sandrat: when SweetXOGrannie is done, can you tell me very
specifically how you are dealing with (or avoiding) the issue of child ownership in Kenya?
<sandrat> yes I looked at the link above. In the blog there are some of these skills, I will certainly point him towards this blog. I have some contacts at TERC and may try and get some free info from them
<CanoeBerry> What's happneing to these XOs in the evenings and weekends?
<sandrat> What do you mean. Child ownership of the XOs???
<CanoeBerry> OLPC's 5 principles.
<CanoeBerry> Include "child ownership"
<CanoeBerry> Which means the kids get to take the XOs home.
<CanoeBerry> Is this happening in Kenya?
<sandrat> We don't have enough to give one to each child, but our group is getting adding XO donations to their supply, and we plant o raise money for more XOs as soon as we get through the pilot, then each kid can have one
<sandrat> Some kids may get to take them home during this project, but it is a bit impractical given the small number we have
<CanoeBerry> Full understood. The question remains: what exactly is happening to the XOs in the evening and weekend?
<CanoeBerry> Are they being loaned out to kids?
<sandrat> I will make sure that they do some afterschool access to the Xos
<CanoeBerry> On a rotating basis perhaps?
<sandrat> They can rotate some loans, and I know that they are involved with families in the community and may bring them to the homes after school hours
<CanoeBerry> Can you get us need concrete information here by end of month?
<mafe> CanoeBerry: i like that idea rotating basis.... Sandrat: do the existing xo's they have right now are loaned to some kids?
<SweetXOGrannie> a library run by and for the kids (with lots of adult supervision) is one way to give them ownership
<sandrat> Right now they are planning their teaching, and have the XOs in their Nairobi center where there is a young children's school and some kids around
<mafe> so...would they be like an xo lending library.?
<sandrat> I like the library idea. I'll suggest that, as it would give more access to more kids more quickly. So in addition to the classroom, we can setup a library somewher ein the town
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: what is the status of the 19 XOs that OLPC lent you for "4 months" according to your August proposals?
<mafe> is this the the direction that they're wanting to be?
<sandrat> They have been using them in school for the entire semester from Sept - Dec
<sandrat> Teachers and more than 100 kids have been introduced to the XO and planning for more teaching was in process
<sandrat> I think that they have accessed even more than 100 students. I'll have to look that up
<mafe> sandrat: if I may add into that...they should also be consistent on their project updates considering there have 19 xo's already to work around
<sandrat> Getting the teachers on board is a big hurdle. They have accomplished that
since they received machines in August
<SweetXOGrannie> Sandra, please look at the curriculum outlined by Olin, it is really tight: http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=54466
<alpap> I think that the kids should be working in teams with the XOs, and if the teams could be geographically close, I don't see why they should not take the XOs home.
<sandrat> There are two projects and two schools. One is HIV/AIDS and one is Mathematics. They want to work independently but can't unless they get more laptops
<CanoeBerry> alpap: great suggestions-- can you take charge of implementing this or similar?
<sandrat> I like the teams idea. I will give them all this feedback
<CanoeBerry> OLPC's Contributors Program requires monthly feedback, by blog (or email to contributors@laptop.org if nec) and this projects need to step up to the plate and fulfill that.
<sandrat> I'm sorry there is another url which has the specific curriculum. That is what you are looking for. I think that I put it in the Ticket... just a minute until I find. it. I
<sandrat> In the proposal they talk about the job of monthly feedback. I don't know if you saw that
<alpap> I have suggested to Mark that he has the kids working in teams so that they are all involved in the learning process by taking part in discussions
<SweetXOGrannie> I did. BUt I am more interested in how they will teach than in how they will test
<sandrat> Just aminute and I can paste in the curriculum but it is in table form
<SweetXOGrannie> how about a link?
<sandrat> example Week 5	Reading Time using both the analogue and digital clock and relating between the two
<sandrat> Week 6	Introduction to Angles (identifying angles, naming them)
<sandrat> I'm looking for the url:
<CanoeBerry> alpap: how many kids in your proposed teams--how will this work? how can you personally kick these kids into gear? what tools do you feel sandrat has at her disposal to tighten the focus on what has been a noble but far-too-scattered set of projects?
<mafe> sandrat: that's why the project updates is crucial ...so that all @alapap @SweetXO... 's questions and suggestions are visible ...
<CanoeBerry> Let us conclude in 2 minutes.
<sandrat> We are looking at two project: HIV/AIDs and Mathematics
<sandrat> They are working together due to lack of laptops, are sharing expertise, they have already introduced XO to a large number of kids
<sandrat> The number of kids on the teams is actually in the full proposal ... if you want to look it is all there
<sandrat> There is a very specific schedule of the classes, and specific day by day curriculum. I'm sorry if you can't see that info right now
<SweetXOGrannie> me too
<CanoeBerry> OK, let's conclude now.
<sandrat> These villages are very remote, so time spent there is crucial. We are
supplying the funds for them to get to the villages, If there is any focus problem it is just getting enough time and funds to stay at the sites
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: hopefully http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Donate_Your_Get_One is paying off for you now and in coming weeks.
<CanoeBerry> Providing free XO Laptops.
<sandrat> we have had a few donations, and are recruiting more to give to these teams
<CanoeBerry> Great.
<CanoeBerry> The 4-month loans OLPC provided last year need a strong report if they are going to be renewed.
<CanoeBerry> I did not see an application for renewal of those loans.
<CanoeBerry> But let's move forward on this application now.
<CanoeBerry> Votes please?
<sandrat> You didn't ask for one. But I can get one for you
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: you asked for 4-month loans.
<mafe> sandrat: I also suggest to re-use the 19 xo's for their next round plan ....
<mafe> of projects
<sandrat> yes that is the idea
<sandrat> We are really grateful for the Donate Your Get One site
<sandrat> I will add the specific curriculum plan to the wiki site
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: i don't see your latest project linked from http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects
<CanoeBerry> EG. http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects/KenyaSmallSolutions_HOC_KeongoSchool
<sandrat> It is there ... yes that is it
<sandrat> So you mean I didn't put a link to the blog in that wiki page?
<CanoeBerry> Where is it exactly on http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ?
<sandrat> Sorry I don't understand. The KenyaSmall Solutions is the new project, the old is under a different name
<CanoeBerry> Is do not see Projects/KenyaSmallSolutions_HOC_KeongoSchool posted to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects
<CanoeBerry> This important requirement is not being fulfilled.
<sandrat> II don't know what I did wrong? I can get to it ... you can't see that page
<sandrat> What do you mean.. this is why I sent you info ahead of time to make surethat I didn't make any mistakes.. I don't understand the mistake here/
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: Public posting to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects is required. If you posted there, we need to know exactly where.
<sandrat> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects/KenyaSmallSolutions_HOC_KeongoSchool
<sandrat> Isn't this url the posting that you are asking about????
<sandrat> I offered to drive to Cambridge just to make sure that I got everything right for this review
<sandrat> Isn't this url a public posting?
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: you are required to fix http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects and http://hoclaptop.blog.com
<sandrat> This is what the instructions on your Contributor program page say to do
<sandrat> How do I make it public if it is there and I can see it. I didn't know that it wasn't public ? If there is some misunderstanding please tell me what to do
<sandrat> hoclaptop.blog.com is public
<sandrat> I posted projects before and did them the same way, so I am misunderstanding something here
<sandrat> CanoeBerry: I don't understand what is wrong with the posting
<mafe> it's accessible Sandrat but I don't see any difference from the old proposal of Hands of Charity ....it's the same goal as with the hands of charity
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: this is not a tech support forum, as we have 3 more projects to review now, but we need you to publish to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects and http://hoclaptop.blog.com updates, along the lines of what SweetXOGrannie and mafe requested.
<sandrat> This a completely new proposal
<sandrat> The dates are different, the curriculum is new
<thundering-light> I am confused :S
<sandrat> Is there someone who can call me to explain how to do this,or I am glad tocome into Cambridge tomorrow so I can just understand. ihave been in IT for 20 years, If you tell me I think I will understand
<CanoeBerry> Please we need to move on now -- in conclusion sandrat & alpap need to clearly publish off of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects
<CanoeBerry> The Contributors Program does not involve driving to Cambridge.
<sandrat> is there a mentor who could please tell me how to do this.
<CanoeBerry> Rather it involves publishing off of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects
<CanoeBerry> Folks will help you if you need that.
<SweetXOGrannie> Sorry Sandra, we all seem to be dumping on you today, but I think we all have valid concerns about this project
<sandrat> Just give me an email address
<sandrat> Who is going to help me please ..
<sandrat> let me know who to contact
<CanoeBerry> contributors@laptop.org keeping Subject: [laptop.org #52890]
<CanoeBerry> Thanks Sandra.
<sandrat> I would like to address your concerns, but I have not seen a question yet that pointed to an issue that was not addressed
<CanoeBerry> sandrat: your past progress and future milestones need to be published in full clarity off of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects
<CanoeBerry> End of story.
<CanoeBerry> Time to move onto Project #3 now.
<CanoeBerry> Please let's all review this:
<mafe> as I'm seeing the proposal ...it think you're doing it right already Sandra but I think it's the capabilities or what is CP is for...i think the Hands of Charity is now in the position to seeks NGO's and more xo donation for concrete implementation of the goal.
* thundering-light  Quit ("Connection overflow x89i023j209:Time Out")

[ PROJECT #3 - NACIF OLPC-Lending Library in Gomoa-Dasum District of Ghana / New York, USA ]

<CanoeBerry> NACIF OLPC-Lending Library in Gomoa-Dasum District of Ghana / New
<CanoeBerry> York, USA
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=52942
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 4 XOs over 3 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Our goal is to build a number of "paperless" libraries in
<CanoeBerry> which OLPCs replace paper books. NACIF is a charitable organization
<CanoeBerry> dedicated to helping young girls obtain a great education and,
<CanoeBerry> towards this
<CanoeBerry> goal, is building or equipping a number of libraries in remote
<CanoeBerry> villages in
<CanoeBerry> Ghana. The cost of supplying books to these libraries is however
<CanoeBerry> prohibitive
<CanoeBerry> and NACIF has decided it can provide serve more girls by using
<CanoeBerry> e-books. The
<CanoeBerry> OLPC is the perfect medium for such a project in the areas in which NACIF
<CanoeBerry> works. Most importantly, we want to encourage girls to create and share
<CanoeBerry> content about their community, something they cannot easily do with
<CanoeBerry> books.
<CanoeBerry> The content will include creating diaries, news articles, and
<CanoeBerry> photo-albums.
<CanoeBerry> Thus, the OLPC provides these girls with the "active" educational
<CanoeBerry> experience
<CanoeBerry> as opposed to the passive education they will gain through reading paper
<CanoeBerry> books.
<CanoeBerry> Anybody here to advocate for / represent their proposal?
<SweetXOGrannie> Realistic timelime! Good planning Maybe 3 mos is a little short
<CanoeBerry> Yes, 7 people involved is a good sign.
<CanoeBerry> Though we do not have all their email addresses.
* alpap  has left #OLPC-meeting
<mafe> yes...I like this idea ...are they also familiar with OER?
<CanoeBerry> Oops: while this proposal looks promising, I just noticed the applicant asked for a delay!
<CanoeBerry> So our work is done for today.
<mafe> ok keep me on the loop for this project
<CanoeBerry> Let's move onto Project #4, unless further comments for the applicants?

[ PROJECT #4 - Application - Turtle Art Curriculum Pilot - Needham, Massachusetts ]

<CanoeBerry> OK, onto Project #4 -- please ask help review:
<CanoeBerry> Application - Turtle Art Curriculum Pilot - Needham, Massachusetts
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=54466
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Olin_university_chapter/Projects/Curriculum
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10 XOs over 6 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> The immediate goal is to run an after
<CanoeBerry> school program for 3rd-5th graders that teaches math and engineering
<CanoeBerry> concepts by using Turtle Art. We would like to demonstrate that programs
<CanoeBerry> like Turtle Art allow students to grasp concepts such as angles and
<CanoeBerry> variables at a younger age. We plan to document the curriculum and
<CanoeBerry> make it
<CanoeBerry> available online and to the OLPC Community. We are also attempting to
<CanoeBerry> find
<CanoeBerry> teachers willing to try out the curriculum in the classroom concurrently
<CanoeBerry> with our pilot or shortly after. There has been some interest from the
<CanoeBerry> Cambridge Friends School in partnering with us. Finally, if the
<CanoeBerry> project is
<CanoeBerry> successful we hope to continue developing and piloting curricula that use
<CanoeBerry> the XO and/or Sugar as teaching tools.
<CanoeBerry> This proposal's quite detailed & impressive.
<CanoeBerry> elsa: can you introduce your work & plans?
<elsa> sure
<SweetXOGrannie> Realistic. Well planned. Has curriculum ready to go. You already know I am very impressed by this one.
<elsa> we're working right now to develop the curriculum, and we already have the students and classroom lined up
<CanoeBerry> 2hrs per week?
<mafe> how do you plan to publish your curriculum?
<elsa> I'm working that out right now with our team. We will definitely post our lesson plans on the wiki, and we'll keep a blog
<sandrat> i'd like to assist with this project
<elsa> I think 1 hour per week
<SweetXOGrannie> lots of pictures would be nice as you go along
<mafe> what's the difference of this proposal from existing olin projects?
<elsa> We might put up a shinier web page up when we're finished, but we don't want to continually be updating that during the project
<mafe> and a booklet will be nice too
<elsa> The difference is that we will be actually spending some time in the classroom
<SweetXOGrannie> fun!
<mafe> who will be the teachers?
<sandrat> mafe: will contact me after this session
<CanoeBerry> else: i understand you pioneered most of this work yourself, but do you also have a mentor / contact at the school you can rely on yet?
<elsa> in the past we've worked mostly on developing hardware and software, but it's not useful to anyone unless it has been demonstrated in a classroom setting
<elsa> We're running the program through EASE in Needham
<elsa> There aren't any Olin professors involved, but we have talked to a number of Needham area teachers in making this happen
<SweetXOGrannie> I like your concept what looks good on paper and in the lab doesn's always work in the classroom
<CanoeBerry> Are kids taking the XOs home?
<mafe> elsa: i suggest on the course of your program find champion tech team from your
students to help you out facilitate...in the long run
<elsa> I have a meeting with the lady that runs EASE in late January, but I already know that it's been accepted.
<elsa> yes, the kids are taking the XO's home
<CanoeBerry> For the whole week, wow!
<SweetXOGrannie> students can be a real asset. That is what they are doing at the Audubon MS project
<elsa> Yes, I tried to have my grandmother work through the first lab yesterday, and I think we'll have to be pretty flexible with our timeline
<SweetXOGrannie> the techie stuff I mean
<CanoeBerry> +1 if the applicant published her link off of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects
<SweetXOGrannie> how old is grannie?
<SweetXOGrannie> +1
<elsa> We don't have any plans to involve the students in that right now. We have a repair center in house, so I don't anticipate technical problems being much of an issue
<mafe> @SweetXOGrannie: yes that's awesome if you see them facilitate and their classmate ask help through them
<elsa> 89
<mafe> elsa: cool
<SweetXOGrannie> wow! impressive!
<CanoeBerry> Final questions?
<CanoeBerry> From the applicant or jurors?
<mafe> elsa: what do you mean? of not involving the students
* dirakx  Quit ("Leaving.")
<elsa> I meant as far as any necessary repairs
<SweetXOGrannie> students can help a lot with simple trouleshooting, reflashing, etc
<elsa> it's mostly a time issue - we'd prefer to just give them a loaner from our repair center stock and fix the issue later
<elsa> We'll see what comes up - if the kids are really interested in repair stuff I'm sure we could show them how
<CanoeBerry> Charge admission for open source tourists!
<mafe> yes...and all xo activities ....
<CanoeBerry> (and open pedagogy tourists!)
<SweetXOGrannie> but if the students can help at least some, it helps give them a feeling of "ownership" which is part of OLPCs goals
<CanoeBerry> Seriously, if this project is half as successful as it appears it'll be.
<mafe> Sweet...agree...
<elsa> That's one thing I still have to talk to EASE about. I'd like to have visiters, but all the team members have to submit CORI forms and I don't know how they feel about walk-ins
<CanoeBerry> Right-- keep us updated on your Wiki, OK?
<CanoeBerry> Shall we wrap up our conclusion for Project #4 now?
<SweetXOGrannie> schools have very tight security these days
<elsa> sandrat: you said you'd be interested in mentoring - maybe I can email you about
that?
<elsa> we will. I'll post Mel's wiki song somewhere public :)
<CanoeBerry> +1 if applicant publishes her link off of http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects

[ PROJECT #5 - Gambia StartUp / XO-machines used as a tool to collect data for the District Health Information System, DHIS - The Gambia / Asker, Norway ]

<CanoeBerry> Plz all help review -- Project #5 here:
<CanoeBerry> Gambia StartUp / XO-machines used as a tool to collect data for the
<CanoeBerry> District Health Information System, DHIS - The Gambia / Asker, Norway
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=54571
<CanoeBerry> http://gambiastartup.com
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 3-10 XOs over 6 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Gambia has become a part of the HISP program. http://hisp.org/
<CanoeBerry> DHIS is deployed in the regional levels, and the plan is now to connect
<CanoeBerry> as many of the health facilities with sustainable equipment. The
<CanoeBerry> XO-machines will be used in different rural health facilites for
<CanoeBerry> collecting of health data.
<CanoeBerry> The health data can be collected both off/online.
<SweetXOGrannie> Do we have a similar project anywhere?
<CanoeBerry> I've talked to this woman, and even though she's not yet up to speed, I'd be in favor of shipping her 2 XOs for exploratory purposes as this has high potential across the country.
<mafe> I think some project proposal ....
<mafe> yes...what i liked is that they have already content
<CanoeBerry> If she familiarizes herself with OLPC's principles/culture/possibilities.
<SweetXOGrannie> What software do they plan to use?
<CanoeBerry> Yes. And her backers have strong credentials, but I need to understand their time commitment and forward-direction..
<CanoeBerry> Oops my apology if the applicant is actually male not female.
<mafe> i see that they see the xo as the tool to dissiminate and collect resources among locals
<mafe> so adding conten on the wiki of the xo will be good ...contribution
<CanoeBerry> The applicant requests 3-10.
<CanoeBerry> How about 3 for startered, assuming he/she responds positively to the
software / activity (Sugar) environment.
<mafe> let's start them with your original plan...2-5?
<CanoeBerry> *3 for starters?
<mafe> yes
<SweetXOGrannie> +1
<CanoeBerry> The applicant has a tight deadline, leaving to Africa very soon.
<CanoeBerry> Sounds good.
<CanoeBerry> Objection to 3 XO-1 laptops to The Gambia's health project?
