At this point, you need to be fairly skilled with UNIX environments to get Sugar up an running. There are some skeletal instructions for Setting Up a Sugar Development Environment on Ubuntu Linux that you could use as a guideline.
Sugar is under heavy development, thus it can change faster then these instructions.

NOTE: you should check the :Category:Installing Sugar for an updated list of distros and installation instructions.
If you do get Sugar up and running on your *IX system, please update this page with some more details but try to keep it as general as possible. For instance it is sufficient to tell people to install one of the Python packages or to go to the Python website and install the latest source tarball. People should be expected to know what package types work on their system and what package tools and ports libraries they can use to install standard stuff.

As of 2007-11, it appears Fedora 7, Fedora 8, Ubuntu and Gentoo are working well and are actually used (eg, by the core team). Debian appears a work in progress, but not yet ready for use? The other platforms seem unlikely to work without a great deal of effort. MitchellNCharity 00:42, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
