The Institution
The Laboratory of Integrated Systems, established in 1975 at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, has its research and development activities centered on computer integrated systems. As a pioneer in several research topics, LSI has strong partnership with industry and intense cooperation with foreign institutions.
Among the current 250 LSI members, there are 22 professors from the University of São Paulo, 43 research fellows and staff members, 115 graduate students, 64 undergraduate students and several permanent foreign collaborators.
NATE (Learning, Work and Entertainment Center)
NATE is an effort aimed at Educational Technologies research and development that has supported the improvement of the Brazilian learning environment by means of multidisciplinary projects that align Engineering and Pedagogy. Operating since 2001, NATE receives support from several public and private institutions, such as the Municipal Office of Education, State of Sao Paulo’s Symphonic Orchestra, Matic Entretenimentos, USP Polytechnical Faculty’s Cientec Park, Fapesp – Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo e CNPQ (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnológico, Scientific and Technological Development National Council).
Project UCA (One Laptop per Student)
The Brazilian government has selected NATE to make a feasibility analysis of the project segment focused on hardware manufacturing and software development. The propose breaks paradigms by daring to look for ways to manufacture a portable computer at a really low price, thus meeting Brazilian government’s scope of social inclusion, which is critical to the countries that face social unbalancing, like Brazil.
Also it has developed softwares to support the education and, in 2006, it created responsible teams for rewrite educational softwares made in java for the programming language standard of the XO: Python.
