Power-up boot sequence for activated, secure laptops

  For the general public

Laptops either come pre-activated from the factory—e.g., Give One Get One laptops—or they are activated with a key when they are given to a child—typical of our country deployments.

The following is a description of the boot-up sequence for laptops that have been activated by either method:

1. Press the Power Button: the Power LED comes on and a startup sound plays.
2. The backlight of the screen comes on and a white XO character appears in the center of the screen.
3. After approximately 15 seconds, a white dot appears below the XO.
4. After another 15 seconds, the top half of the XO character begins to slowly rotate: over the course of about 20 dots will appear in the positions of numbers on a clock face.
5. Once the circle is complete, the Sugar home screen appears.
   • The XO character in the center is now colored.
   • A Journal icon appears in the 'donut' below the XO character.
   • The battery and network icons appear below the donut.
   • A row of activity icons appear along the bottom of the Frame.
   • Four navigation icons appear along the top of the Frame.
   • Your XO icon appears at the upper left of the Frame.

Troubleshooting

Once the laptop has finished booting, if you do not see all of these items, there may be a problem with your software. Document the OS and firmware versions. How to check the OS and firmware versions

Power-up boot sequence for non-secure laptops

  For Developers

Non-secure laptops are those used in testing and development. Individuals can turn off security by requesting a developer's key (Please see Developer Key info).

1. Press the Power Button: the Power LED comes on and a startup sound plays.
2. The backlight of the screen comes on.
3. A white XO character appears in the center of the screen.
4. The Open Firmware version information appears.
5. The screen switches to white-on-black text.
6. A 'Hello children of the world' message appears.
7. Fedora boot information scrolls by.
8. The screen returns to a white background.
9. After a minute or so, the Sugar home screen appears.
   • The XO character in the center is now colored.
   • A Journal icon appears in the 'donut' below the XO character.
   • The battery and network icons appear below the donut.
   • A row of activity icons appear along the bottom of the Frame.
   • Four navigation icons appear along the top of the Frame.
   • Your XO icon appears at the upper left of the Frame.

Troubleshooting
