See Adding USB SVGA for the latest success stories.

A VGA adapter is rather expensive, and not as useful as a TV adapter. TV output has recently become cheap (witness the rash of cheap game-in-a-joystick systems at toy stores), using similar display hardware could work. A microcontroller connected to the USB port would easily handle regular Linux text displays, and at least be an aid in debugging.
