Tutorial for Offline Map Activity

Getting Started

  1. Close all activities except the Browse activity. This activity is in development and you may need to reboot.
  2. Download the Offline Map activity from http://haiti.latest.disaster-tool.appspot.com/OfflineMaps-2.xo
  3. Click the icon to run OfflineMaps.
  4. Do not move the mouse. The activity will take some time to load. The loading animation of the cursor may stop for several seconds - as long as it continues to move, the activity is working.

Moving

  1. Use the + and - buttons to zoom in and out (magnify, demagnify)
  2. Use the arrow keys to move north, south, east, and west
  3. Double-click to zoom in on an area

Basic Search

  1. You can center on a city by typing its name in the Find box on the top of your screen, and pressing enter.
  2. Try Lagonav, Port-au-Prince, and Jacmel. Dozens of cities' locations were provided by MINUSTAH (UN in Haiti)
  3. Bonus: searching does not require accents, capital letters, or hyphens

Markers

  1. On the top of your screen, select "Edit" to see your map-editing options:

Adding Text

  1. Click the i to place an information marker
  2. Your mouse now looks like a + sign. Click on the map to add a marker.
  3. A pink marker and some text appears. Click Edit to open your edit menu.
  4. Click Add to finish editing the marker.
  5. You can now click your marker to re-open it, and click X to finish viewing it.
  6. Bonus: if you know HTML, you can use it in the Edit screen.
  7. Bonus2: if you are connected to the internet, use a code such as wiki::Haiti or wikiHT::Ayiti

Adding a Photo

  1. In the Edit menu, find and click the {+} button
  2. Select a photo, video, or audio file from Record
  3. Your mouse now looks like a + sign. Click on the map to add a marker.
  4. An orange marker appears. Click it to view your photo/video/audio.
  5. Click X when you are done viewing the photo

Opening KML Markers

  1. Insert a USB drive in your non-XO computer
  2. Download MINUSTAH's list of hospitals from http://haiti.latest.disaster-tool.appspot.com/Hospitals.kml
  3. You can also download some of these datasets:
  1. Save Hospitals.kml to your USB drive
  2. Insert the USB drive into your XO. Wait ~30 seconds for this to be detected.
  3. In the Edit menu, find and click the {+} button
  4. Select the USB drive, and type Hospitals in the search box.
  5. Select Hospitals
  6. To see the locations better, return to the Search menu and search for Port-au-Prince.
  7. Click any of the blue markers to read its contents

Content Search

  1. You can search all of your markers by their text content
  2. Return to the Search menu
  3. These searches are typed in the Tags: section. Type a word or two, then press enter.
  4. If you've loaded the Hospitals.kml file, search "Hospital Adventista" to locate this place.

Lines and Shapes

Adding a Line

  1. In the Edit menu, find and click the / button
  2. Your mouse now looks like a + sign. Click on the map to add your first point.
  3. Continue clicking on the map to add points to the line
  4. When you are finished, click the / button again

Adding a Shape

  1. In the Edit menu, find and click the hexagon-shape button
  2. Your mouse now looks like a + sign. Click on the map to add your first point.
  3. Continue clicking on the map to add points to the shape
  4. When you are finished, click the shape button again

Opening KML Lines and Shapes

  1. Insert a USB drive in your non-XO computer
  2. Download KML files to the USB drive
  1. Insert the USB drive into your XO. Wait ~30 seconds for this to be detected.
  2. In the Edit menu, find and click the {+} button
  3. Select the USB drive, and type haitiDataEx, haitiLineEx, or the name of another downloaded KML file
  4. Select the correct file
  5. Lines and polygon shapes should appear

Editing with other XOs

  • When you share the activity, other XOs see your markers, lines, and edits
  • They also will receive markers, lines, and polygon shapes from imported KML
  • The markers on your XO will update if they are edited on another XO while you are sharing the activity

Importing More Maps

OpenStreetMap.org

OpenStreetMaps are free to use, and regarded as the best street maps of Haiti at the moment

  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet
  2. Go to the Edit menu
  3. Click the icon second from the right
  4. Bonus: size of map will depend on your zoom level.

Google Maps

  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet
  2. Go to the Edit menu
  3. Click the globe/Browse activity icon
  4. Bonus: size of map will depend on your zoom level.
