i found the answer on the Open Firmware (OFW) page -- |

When finished with the OFW - OK prompt, do one of the following: |

* turn the power off by holding down the power button |
|||
* type ''boot'' to start the operating system |
|||
* type ''bye'' to restart the laptop |
|||
* type ''power-off'' to turn off the laptop |

Small problem: none of these techniques gets me an Ok prompt on my XO-1.

When finished with the OFW - OK prompt, do one of the following:
- turn the power off by holding down the power button
- type boot to start the operating system
- type bye to restart the laptop
- type power-off to turn off the laptop
