(Activities installed separately? Yea or nay?)

The on this page suggests that activities now must always be installed separately (which was my experience when upgrading a while back). However, the information on http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Update_paths appears to indicate that activities only need to be installed separately when updating offline.

Revision as of 14:56, 4 August 2008

Hoping that "be bold" applies here as it does at Wikipedia, I added two notes to the recommended procedures. But I don't really have a clue, so I hope someone who does will review my changes.

In the first step, I said:

(Note that the "boot" directory will contain two zip files, actos.zip and runos.zip. This is normal; these files do not need to be unzipped).

I was concerned that maybe I needed to do a recursive unzip or some such thing, but Dave Wallace said it's normal for the files to be zipped and the update seemed to work, so I trust this advice is, at worst, "mostly harmless."

In the last step, after "Remove the USB flash drive," in my case it said it needed to do a firmware update and then complained because it wasn't connected to AC power and shut down. So I added: "Connect the XO to AC power, so that it will be able to proceed if it determines that a firmware update is needed." I figure this advice, too, should be at worst "mostly harmless." • I just downloaded the update and everything worked perfectly. karenxo 22 June 2008
  • I spoke/wrote too soon. I ought to have said the download worked perfectly. Unfortunately, some activities do not work perfectly--not as well as they did before--and I am thinking of going back to an earlier build. Has anyone else had trouble with the browser (specifically, not being able to click more than one link after starting it) or the keyboard (specifically, seemingly spontaneous CAPS LOCK that is difficult to get rid of) since upgrading to build 703?

Battery Issue

(Has anyone else experienced this?) When the battery was drained fully and plugged in again, the yellow/orange light appeared correctly. However, when turned on, the battery indicator on the screen was an empty outline and read "Fully Charged". The yellow/orange light stayed on. When unplugged, the laptop would shut down. Reverting back to 656 fixed this problem.

Conflicting information

The on this page suggests that activities now must always be installed separately (which was my experience when upgrading a while back). However, the information on http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Update_paths appears to indicate that activities only need to be installed separately when updating offline.

You are correct, it is required in both cases. --morgs 14:56, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
