OLPCO2e, et al

Hi Sven,

I was cleaning up the wiki this morning and found all of the CO2 pages, which blossomed over the spring. There were about 12 pages which all had the same content, ... so I merged them (without the use of any gang :) into OLPCO2e. Sj talk 13:00, 8 December 2009 (UTC) I cannot find the page: OLPCO2e link Agenda 21 anymore. How can I recuperate it? It is a very important page for all in OLPC and OLPCO2e. Thanky--SvenAERTS 11:20, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

I also replied - but on my talk page - on your other paragraphs. This tool notifies you of that or do I just have to mention and you go there and have a look then or I have to do like above and copy/paste parts- topic per topic - to copy/paste here in your User talk page? Do I have to Watch this page? How are these "message" alerts being activated? Ty --SvenAERTS 11:20, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Since Saturday 8/1/09 the counter does not work. Now it is not possible to see how many users has been accessed the pages. I’m not sure but I think all pages have the same problem --Papillon 10:43, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Content meeting request

Hi SJ - Wanted to check in and see if some of us could meet with you for additional questions about wikislices. For example, who builds the slices? Also, who insures the content is accurate and appropriate? How do those slices get deployed on the XO machines? Do teachers have a way to request or build a wikislice themselves (would he or she just request it on the wikipedia wikislices project page?) Thanks! annegentle 13:54, 11 April 2008 (EDT)

Right now wikislices are determined by the editors of the relevant page; and they pull the latest content from the wiki in question. Future features include identifying specific revisions of pages, having a 'reviewed' flag for each article+revision, and contribution to a wikislice from an XO (say, by posting a set of words + a topic to a requests-for-wikislice page). Zdenek is a good person to talk to about how that might work. We're having a wikislice related discussion tomorrow aft EST, if you're around. --Sj talk 22:58, 11 April 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the info and pointer to Zdenek, very useful, especially the bundles of xol files, good to know and peruse. Michael Priestly and a few others at IBM wanted on the call but I probably can't get everyone notified by tomorrow, but I'm hoping Monday would work. Cjl is also interested so please do send call info for tomorrow's call, and also, please check availability on Monday (sorry for repeat requests but the interest is high). Thanks! annegentle 23:09, 11 April 2008 (EDT)

Dear Samuel,

Thanks for taking the time to send me a comment on my blog. Im available most days of the week, as I currently am working for myself. Im based in Swansea in the UK. So phoning maybe rather on the expensive. However I would be happy to talk over skype. If you are willing to suggest a time I will be happy to chat. Preferably I would prefer to be in bed by 3am here.

So if you could give me an email back at jonhurlock/at/gmail /.com or add me on skype using jon_hurlock (yes theres and underscore in there, so please dont remove that, just remove slashes from the gmail account.).

Kind regards,

Jon Hurlock

Google SoC mentor for E-mail activity

The individual who wrote the Email_Activity wiki page asked me whether or not I would be interested in becoming a SoC mentor. I created a small page about me at PhilipVanHoof. I'm the author of the Tinymail framework, frequent GNOME contributor and foundation member. I'm on the team of software developers who developed the Modest E-mail client by Nokia, which uses the Tinymail framework. I also wrote TMut (a minimalistic E-mail client that uses Tinymail). Tinymail is a library/framework for building mobile E-mail clients (http://tinymail.org).

My E-mail is spam@pvanhoof.be, my GMail (which I don't use) is philip.vanhoof@gmail.com

Health content xls files

With regard to the recently added support in wiki for viewing excel (xls) files created in google spreadsheet to be viewed as simple html tables within wiki. It'd be great if we could copy paste the contents of the various xls files there and use the wiki plugin to easily view them. See content section on health--Arjs 01:47, 29 January 2008 (EST)

GM clarification?

After our conversation on the nature of GM today, the GM section of the laptopfoundation.org website is not very explanatory according to my OLPC:Webpage_corrections_needed#laptopfoundation.org current understanding, and is something Walter or someone else with editing privs may want to fix. Community project review process

My notes from our talk over IRC today are on teamwiki at User:Mchua/Developers_program. Let me know if I'm still misunderstanding what you proposed. (I'm not wholly sure I agree with it yet, but I don't think I fully understand it yet - see the "cons" section of the community proposal - and want to make sure I "get it" before I voice an opinion.) Mchua 00:32, 30 January 2008 (EST)

University programs

Yeah, the page needs updating and more resources, as do grassroots groups. University program - or rather, Talk:University program - has some notes from today's conversations (not just with you, with other support-gangers and Arjun too) that need to be cleaned up and moved into mainpage eventually. re: repair center stuff on teamwiki

I'm hesitant to push all of that to public wiki, since Adam said he's like to work with me and Kim to port it (there's some stuff not ready to go public, though I don't know what that stuff is - I've asked). If Adam/Kim says ok, I would love to push it public. (Heck, I've been trying to do that for at least 2 weeks.) Can you poke them about this since you're physically adjacent? Translation subpages

I've been looking at Uncategorized Pages and I see a lot of subpages in the form of:

http;//wiki.laptop.org/go/SomePage/translations

Am I correct in my belief that using these subpages are created by the use of the templates, Translation or Translations?

If so, would it be possible and/or desirable for that subpage to be created with a pre-existing category of some sort so that it doesn't end up in Uncategorized?

Cjl 23:25, 24 February 2008 (EST)

Clarification: I grok the DIY ethos of the wiki, but making temmplate modifications goes beyond my personal wiki-wisdom and a change that could effect so many pages should probably be done by someone with more expertise.

Cjl 13:39, 25 February 2008 (EST)

work on translation templates

{{translations}} now tells you to copy/paste a reasonable default to the translation list page if it's missing.

{{translation}} now includes an optional "none" argument that should makes it function like a quasi-redirect. This uses a subtemplate which only exists for Spanish.

See participate in Spanish for an example of using the latter.

It would be good to have a template for the translation list page which did the same "paste me" instructions trick as I did in translations.

I did some initial changes to the translations how to page to explain this but it is far from finished.

Going to bed now without finishing all the cleanup involved.

Thought you might like to know. Homunq 22:08, 26 February 2008 (EST)

olpc userbox templates

SJ, how does one create a user box template similar to:

Flocking together

I've refined the definition of Category:People. I think that wider use of this category can have particular benefits with regard to assisting on-wiki communities grow by making it easier to quickly find birds-of-a-feather, particularly for "outside parties" that we want to convert to "new participants". If you agree that this tag could be an aid to lowering the first barrier to participation (finding someone to reach out to on a given project), I'd like you to consider how to best promote it's use (going forward) and to get existing wiki pages tagged (retrofitting). I've already done some tagging and as I wander the wiki I always try to leave improved trail-markers behind, but there are a lot of pages out there for one person. Cjl 13:30, 10 May 2008 (EDT)

Note from Lidet; Any image you choose to use about Ethiopia is usually extremely politically charged. The Yellow star on blue is no exception. The safest and only real representation that we can use for Ethiopia are the colors of the flag superimposed on an XO-man. Seth 17:37, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Images not being thumbnailed

SJ - I unfortunately don't have the time to look into this right now but MediaWiki usually thumbnails images for you, (especially if you throw them into GALLERY tags http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial#.3Cgallery.3E_tag ) and I'm getting fed lots of full-resolution images that have just been scaled down with the browser (I.e. being sent full multi-megabyte images that are being squeezed down) - you may want to check if mediawiki has access to either the PHP 'gd' library or imagemagick or whatever it uses to make thumbs ... see User:Hobart/thumbnails20080709 for example of problem

Could you add the "Musical Look at Waste" to collections grid?

Hi SJ, I've updated the library.info file of the content bundles I mantain, so that they go into the Activities category in the library. Could you add them to the main grid of the collections grid, or point me to where I can learn how to do it, as it is not as simple as editing that wiki page and adding text and link to bundles. The bundles address has kept the same, but here they are just in case, tested in Update.1 and latest joyride, the English and Portuguese versions.

Portuguese - File:Olhar-musical-pelos-residuos.xol
English - File:Musical-look-at-waste.xol

A nice idea would be if kids in countries where one of these languages are taught at school, would translate the content to their mother language. It's cc-sa-by so no authorization is needed.

Ok seeya, keep up the good work Eduardo. P.S. - I would even endeavour to request you to make this collection part of library core. I've seen kids get great pleasure and a feeling of achievement from making and playing these instruments. I know it is really Portugal-centric, so I'll understand if you don't want to put in library-core as it could be a bit of "culture-pushing". HoboPrimate 17:55, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Possibly "Variable Quality" Exchange on Sugar List

Hi SJ,

Following up on your question about the quality of posts to the public lists. See this exchange: http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/devel/2008-August/017568.html

I do not want to discuss the substance of the exchange and I do nto begrudge Erik for answering. He gave a good answer and it helped and Bastien went away happy. Please do not re-open the subject of this exchange or I will feel that my raising it here was a mistake.

I say its an example of Variable Quality responses because I'm not sure the information exchanged was correct or definitive. It may well be correct and it may not be. I'm just not sure as it stands today. Its an example for consideration as we try to flush out how best to run this project on public lists and wikis.

Thanks,

I just noticed this:

"Fid" is a nice username. It's a shame to make it unavailable. If you must rename, something like u154970135 would be a good choice.

IMHO there is no need though, since nobody is going to go digging through the list of users.

hi SJ,

Honestly, I was never an admin at NWE, so it'll be new. I just made templates or fixed templates that wasn't working. For vandalism, I could check recent changes and catch one, or if you are developing a bot, I can vandalize on purpose to see if the bot will catch it. Am I already an admin now? It'll be great if you can post me something like welcome to OLPC but for admins so I could read how to use my powers :P. --Hiro 12:19, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

I wish the main page could be changed to be more... easily viewed instead of bunch of links, but I wouldn't be able to design it from scratch. Just thought I'll throw in the idea. Are there pages that need clean up or with broken templates? Feel free to let me know. --Hiro 17:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

TOC/heading question

On a page like Sugar Almanac in a section like Sugar Almanac#Package: sugar how would we link to the headings on Sugar.env? --erikb

I'm not sure quite what you want to do. The TOC comes from the {{Sugar Almanac TOC}} template... which is long and can't easily be compressed into that three-line section for the sugar Package. Can you explain which headings you want to link to? the same ones that are currently in Sugar Almanac#Package: sugar, but with a different format? --Sj talk 22:26, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

I would like to create a new TOC which can list the headings on different pages. For example, in this new TOC, I would like to list all of the subheadings on linked-to pages.

Sugar.graphics.toolbutton

Sugar.profile

Can I provide a TOC with a list of pages and have the wiki automatically list the subheadings on those pages? We would like to see all of the Almanac's answered questions on one page.

Checking up

Hi SJ,

I recently made an application for some development laptops through the contributors' program, which I understand was approved. I was hoping to get started soon and just wanted to check if the laptops have been sent and if not when I could expect them.

Thanks,

Gerry Healy

I'll be leaving Nepal in June 2009 so I have some time constraints to work on the Dhading project. I have had delays at my own end also, but for it to be realistic in this time frame. I need some development machines soonish. I may be able to borrow some from OLE. Would that be a better option? Nickel chrome 11:03, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

There's no problem getting them from us -- check back next week on the status of your machines. You might consider applying for a Nepali contributors-pool as well. 24.61.14.99 20:27, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Bundles vs. collections

These days there are

  • Activities, .xo files which show up in the Home view
  • Collections, .xol files which show up in the OLPC Library.

So I think Category:Activity_bundle should only be for the .xo file put on wiki.laptop.org , not for the wiki page it comes from.

I'm not sure what Category:Bundles is for.

all bundles, activity, library, generic. --Sj talk

Also, Category:Activity_bundle says:

Activites that provide a .xo bundle should declare so ...

but I thought all Activities provide a .xo file.

If you define it that way, then this is true. That's probably clean; it leaves items such as individual etoys projects in limbo until they are packaged.

BTW, I'm adding all Collections I find to Category:Collections and it seems other categorizations of them are redundant.

Which other categoriations? That category should itsefl be in Category:Bundles. Thanks for the update! --Sj talk 18:52, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Decisions about Projects

The workflow for new projects is not clear to me. Who decides about a project and how often? AFAIC decisions are made on weekly meetings, but my project has not been touched in the projectdb for 5 weeks. And why are projects hidden in the projectdb? If there is nothing happening for weeks someone else might submit a similar project, or even the same. This is a duplication of work for both the submitters and the decision makers. Is there a way to make the process more transparent? --Cwickert 14:09, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

the plan is to move the whole thing, minus the sharing of address/phone info at the end, to the wiki and projects page. --Sj talk 14:42, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Communication

What are the official channels for development related communication? #olpc and #olpc-help were not very helpful because noone was able to answere my questions. #olpc-devel is orphaned. Also I wonder if editing wiki pages is a good way for direct one on one communication. Isn't there something else if I wanted to reach you? --Cwickert 14:09, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Activity web pages vs. Projects/ subpages

Hey sj, as I wrote devel@lists.laptop.org I wrote Maintaining activity web information.

If activities remain on w.l.o and use the [Edit with form], anyone can make a lists of activities that stays up-to-date instead of messing with templates and fragments and transclusions. See Activity queries. To me, this is clearly the way forward.

But there's a lot of stuff I don't understand.

  • Many activities also have an Activities/Name page that's got an ugly summary template. Often it's a link to Projects/Name, e.g. Activities/Etoys. I believe these are confusing and redundant. Can I delete them? If not, is there an explanation of what these pages are for?
  • Creating an activity has buttons to Create activity summary and [Create an activity]. I don't understand why there are two buttons and I don't think either is an appropriate template for an activity. What should an activity's page look like?
  • Some of the Projects/ subpages aren't activities, e.g. Projects/Translation_dictionary is a collection. What are/were you trying to achieve with Projects/ subpages? I see references to a projects DB, is there such a thing?
    • If you want to make a list of projects e.g. on the Projects page, semantics are the way to do it.
    • So I'm not sure if all the project template machinery is redundant. I don't know whether to mark it obsolete or update it to set semantic properties.
  • Is any clean-up and improvement on w.l.o irrelevant if activities are moving to sugarlabs.org ?!

Like so many areas on wiki.laptop.org, I see the results of an idea but not the plan for it, so I'm not sure how to improve on it.

Thanks for any elucidation!

User_talk: page message notifications

Hi Sj, I'm having trouble finding information on the implementation of the notification service that generates a orange-spanned message on my current page when a new message on my talk page is saved. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I'm actually thinking about this in relation to a possible utility to generate small message flags that would appear on main pages on the border of sections that have corresponding talk_page comments (configured by the commenter to match an anchor placed on the main page section.) --FGrose 00:51, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Invitation/Brandeis/Social Justice and Technology Conference

Dear Mr. Klein,

Charles Nesson suggested I be in touch with you. The International Center for Ethics, Justice, and Public Life at Brandeis University is hosting a conference called TMI (Too Much Information): Social Justice in the Age of Facebook on September 10 and 11, 2009. We would like to invite you to speak at the main session on September 11 from 9-11 am, "Does Digital Deepen the Divide?" We believe that you, with your role at One Laptop Per Child, would present a unique and valuable perspective on the question of technological access for children internationally, and whether access to new technologies and computers helps bridge the divides among individuals and societies, or whether it increases the gaps.

I would love to talk to you further about this conference and give you additional detail. Can you contact me at sgwilson@brandeis.edu? I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Best, Stephanie Gerber Wilson, PhD Brandeis University sgwilson@brandeis.edu

Thank you for the invitation. I've responded via email. --Sj talk

Template:test-case-query question

Greetings SJ,

I'm slowly getting familiar with semantic+mediawiki in an effort to determine if this will meet my needs. I'm using the laptop.org QA pages as a reference for sample queries, forms and templates. However, I'm stuck trying to understand a particular problem where mediawiki will not expand a nested template properly using the {{fullurl:...}} parser function.

As one of the original authors of the Template:Add-test-result and Template:Test-case-query pages, I thought you might have insight to this mediawiki-ism. This is likely a new-user problem, but any experiences you can share around the SMW implementation for laptop.org would be appreciated. You can see the page that currently is presenting difficulty at https://publictest6.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Testing_SMW. I can be reached at jlaska AT fedoraproject DOT org. I hope to hear from you soon :)

Thanks, James

I don't think you can embed parser functions the way you were trying to. But the extension is coming along quickly - you should drop a question at the SMW central wiki for the most accurate answer. --Sj talk 05:40, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
