How to make wikiHow's NC content available to XO users
Note that wikiHow uses a non-commercial license, so cannot be used in content bundles to be included with the machines. Of course users may download the bundles themselves, so it's important to think how to make them aware that this excellent resource is available.
- I don't know why you would say that. If you look at the WikiHow group effort for a few minutes, you will see that they went out of their way to find articles that could be licensed under CC-BY for OLPC, and had a team of a dozen people over the course of various months working on parts of the project.
Is it okay, in OLPC policy, to have a list of links to non-open resources? I assume it's okay, otherwise the external links at in Wikipedia articles wouldn't be acceptable. --Chriswaterguy 05:12, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- To have a list of links where? The goal of article pages on the olpcwiki is to describe the state of education and educational resources around the world, and to describe projects developed specifically for OLPC deployments. This includes various classifications (by freeness, by audience, by language), free materials under various licenses, non-free closed-source proprietary work, and even secret work dreamed up by slightly insane people who never publish more than their ideas. So please do develop lists of links to all sorts of resources... but we will be happy if the largest sections of each page are on PD resources :-) --Sj talk 15:29, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- As for making the rest of wikiHow, which is by default under an NC license, available to XO users : make a collection for it, add it to the Collections page -- or better yet, create a new Collections/Nonfree page so that people who don't want to accidentally download nonfree works won't be confused by the difference. There's even a set of scripts available for bundling wikihow articles into content bundles, if you're looking for one. --Sj talk
