OLPC communities
Anecdote : support-gang...
- Origins : "we just need that smart-alec in the schoolyard who helps everyone else" --cjb
- December 19th -- community meeting, GDK, Holt, SJ, CJB, Kim, Walter, JG.
- Pre-meetings, then weekly Sunday meetings started Christmas week.
- In fact, @ OLPC many people were skeptical that this would be a good idea, despite our broad support from foss
- KQ -- do you know what it will take to manage them?
Initially US, now extending to L. America, with F.Libre in Peru and olpc-sur, attracting more es-speakers : again, many without their own XO (and some not wanting one)

Two major types of communities,
free software movement : GNU v OS : debian v. ubuntu? too specific.
- broad sense of how a movement starts, what the necc. ingredients are, where people & projects gather
- ability to communicate, collaborate, share. See principles/lessons.

origins, concept & multilingual community ---> self-organization
- independent community dev in different countries
- community-run events (wikimanias, Wikipedia University)
- locally-driven chapter development [too specific : anyone who feels they are an independent group can form]
principles, lessons
- recognition.
- permission to be bold, licenses, freedom to work. empowerment, autonomy?, desire not to be a tool of some other vision.
- crowding out : separate communities of practice, chilling effects? [not presented negatively]
- repeating: have a goal, a utopian/ideal vision of what is desired, what others are working towards
OLPC communities
starting with a simple ideal : olpc pre-g1g1 --- 1000x of people contributing to a project they thought they would never benefit from. gives one faith in people.
