The Benders - Game Jam June 2007 - xoEasel

The xoSketch is a creative storytelling activity aimed at children aged from three to ten years. The basic design has basic shapes in primary and secondary colors that the child uses as building blocks to create any design. Extending the concept of placing objects onto a stage to create a scene is done by new sets of objects and backgrounds.

Once an object is placed on the stage the child can effect the object in other ways. Transformations include rotate, change color, grow, shrink. Children can also delete the image.

Future: Library of wireframe examples to get creative juices going. Let child save their creations and share with others. Grouping of objects. Animation of objects. Multi-user environment where there is a giant shared storyboard.

Flash as a development environment poses limitations related to how the Gnash Player interacts with the OLPC environment.

The Ten Dollar E-reader (10ER), is a proposed inexpensive electronic reader intended to be distributed to children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to literacy, knowledge and the introduction modern forms of education. The electronic reader project aims at developing ten dollar Electronic reader (10ER) jointly with the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) trade association. The 10ER non-profit organization is based in Montreal QC Canada and was founded as a part time project by the Angel A. group.

The 10EB project will focus on: affordability, simplified design, minimal number of components and ease of use.

Main Features:

• Its sole function will be displaying static image files with text and pictures for educational purposes • The simplified rugged, low-power electronic readers will only display optimized black and white image files from SD cards and will use no operating system and no processor due to their display-only design.

• The screen itself will be a medium resolution shock resistant black and white electrophoretic (colloquially known as e-ink) display. All text and images will be integrated into one, pre-rendered image file generated on independent, external PC’s and Google servers. • The 10EB itself will display content through one, inexpensive image processing only chip, thus eliminating the need for expensive processors.

• The display will be recharged primarily by a “shake” motion to activate an internal generator (similar to the etch-a-sketch toys) and secondarily by a hand-operated crank

The 10ER will be sold to governments and issued to children by schools on a basis of one e-reader per child. Pricing is currently expected to start at around US$8-10 dollars and the goal is to reach the US$5 mark in 2015. Unlike the ODPC, the ten dollar e-readers will aim to be mass produced and sold at their quoted price from the beginning and even lower as the main component: the electrophoretic e-ink displays will become widely available and cheaper in the following years.




The Ten Dollar Ereader Project

The Ten Dollar e-reader project (10DollarEreader) is a Montreal QC based, non-profit organization set up to organize efforts to achieve the construction of the ten dollar e-reader proposed for all developing countries the project and the organization where started on May 2007 in Montreal QC Canada.

The project’s mantra is: "Reading happens before keyboards" Third world countries need to have access to literacy much before having access to a computer. Traditional paper books are inexpensive to manufacture but they become very expensive to ship because of their weight and the space they take as cargo, then they simply fail to reach children in developing nations The weight of several tons of traditional books, encyclopedias and text books can fit in light stamp-size SD cards that weight only grams. The electronic books can be available in nearly unlimited copies at almost no cost in their electronic form offering the advantage that they can be viewed countless times. The main obstacle with this approach is the display needed to view the electronic books.

Current widely available CRT or LCD displays have the following disadvantages: Cost: High Durability: Fragile Weight: Heavy (especially for children) Battery Life: Low-Limited or non available Processor/Computer: Required.


The proposed Ten Dollar E-reader will address these problems the following way: Cost: 10 dollars Durability: High, shock resistant case and screen Weight: 100-200 grams Battery Life: 1-30 hours depending on charge method: (hand crank or shake method) Processor/Computer: Not Applicable. (The proposed reader will run on one low cost chip. No expensive specialized processor will be required)


The 10 Dollar Ereader OLPC is currently looking for funding and technologies from the following sponsor organizations: Sipix, eBay, Google, Red Hat, Quanta Computers The Ten Dollar Ereader Project is looking for collaborations with X-0 1 1 Laptop per child by using existing technologies developed/adapted for the X-0 1 The non-profit organization is based in Montreal QC Canada and was founded as a part time project by Angel A. The 10 dollar e-reader is being proposed as an alternative to states that have not “committed” to the X-0 1 project in any way or to those states that have rejected the OLPC original initiative for budgetary or logistical reasons. The E-readers will be sold to the aforementioned governments, for basic literacy programs that will ideally result in the short term upgrade to higher end $100 laptops based on the assumption that the laptops would become more affordable over time as well as the number of children able to read will increase due to literacy programs. It is therefore logical that the ten dollar e-reader design will mirror and resemble the one hundred dollar laptop design as well as further hardware compatibility and ease of integration between the two to make the eventual “upgrade” from e-reader to laptop a seemingly “natural” progression. The disadvantage to this approach is the possibility of states adopting a passive position in which the e-reader may be considered “enough” because of their low price leading to a delayed progression to the laptop upgrade.


4 Technology

The core of this device is the display used: Electrophoretic displays offer several advantages.

Extremely low power consumption The display draws energy only when it changes content, if there are no changes the page remains as such, without consuming power. This results in highly increased battery performance.

Hi Contrast and Readibility The display'c visibility in norman room light is the equivalent of normal paper, it has no backlight, therefore is easy on the eyes even during extended reading periods

Hi Impact Resistance It is taken for granted that children will subject the 10ER's to a certain ammount of physical stress even when instructed to be careful. Fortunately yhe most important part of the device is also one of the most resistant to physical stress. Unlike LCD's these displays are partially bendable and will not break if subjected to impacts. Obviously, their reistance is limited to impacts with blunt objects. Sharp objects will puncture them and render them useless. For added durability the device's encasing is being designed to be extremely rugged and to resemble some characteristics found on Panasonic's Toughbook laptops with rounded rubbery edges and an internal rubber bed for impact absortion.

4.1 Hardware

Proposed form factor for the 10ER Angle Views

Besides the core advantages of the electrophoretic - e-paper display the rest of the components are being proposed based on the fact that they are low-cost widely available existing technologies used around the world:

Data Storage: SD cards widely available in many sizes. The adaptors and components are ubiquitous to most portable electronics and very low price. The 10ER will benefit from the optional computer-free principle approach used on some HP deskjet printers where the printer can display small previews of the photos to print. The printer itself just contains a very low cost chip that only displays existing data on SD cards without the need of a processor or a OS.

Power Nickel metal hydride battery (NiMH) rechargeable batteries are widely available, low cost, have low memory effect and are less detrimental to the environment than the Ni-Ca type.Capacitors may eleiminate the need for rechargeable batteries provided that the e-paper display is 100% compatible with the voltage provided by capacitors instead of batteries. The NiMH batteries inside the 10ER will be constantly recharged by a generator activated through a shake motion. The energy source availability for the charging motion is not expected to be an issue. A two minute shake will provide enough energy for 2 hours of reading. The longer the shake the more more reading hours, with a proposed 20-30 hour reading time when fully charged. This offers independance for the devices to operate as long as there is a a child, food and the child-inherent will to learn the device will deliver content. To further complement this, the same hand crank used on the OLPC is expected to be compatible to offer a faster means of charge for rechargeable battery-based 10ER's.

We then have a reader that has

-No processor

-No hard disk

-Only one internal moving part: the shake and recharge unit

-Only one external moving part: the rugged protective cover

This saves production costs and battery life Because the reader works on one, low cost all-in-one chip That only reads jpg/png files from sd cards (similar to HP printers)

Hardware Controls

Page Jump: A short press will bring the simplistic thumbnail view of the recently loaded books. These thumbnails will be linked to the actual full screen pages, they will not be part of an interactive menu instead once the book has been selected a calculator like series of 3-5 digits will come up(depending on number of pages) the page number will be increased/ decreased using the next/previous page buttons, to change digit a short simultaneous press of both buttons will be needed whenever the desired number on the screen the the user will use a simultaneous long press of the next and previous page buttons. For books with a lower number of pages a traditional sub-thumbnail view may apply. The former calculator-like approach will be useful for e-books with high page volumes such as dictionaries. This menu should be entirely intuitive without increasin the number of hardware buttons. The lack of a processor also limits the complexity of the menus, however complexity and frills are not part of this project. It should be universally intuitive and easy to learn in leass than a1 minute. A long press to the page jump button will turn on/off the device internally (the display does not consume voltage if the page does not change) Long press 3 consecutive times will bring the thumbnail view of the internal basic library of default content

There is no need to add embellishing hardware. It would increases the production costs and if it is not essential for simple image display, then it is not needed, first function, then functional form.

The processor-less approach saves costs and also relies on the fact that full featured powerful computers and servers will always be available for image pre-processing and re-scaling.

Google servers will run 10ER-optimized tools that will:

1.Open PDF, Doc or existing pre scanned books (original always preserved and paired with 10ER version)

2.Adjust font size and readibility elements, and picture placing according to predefined standards together with thumbnail views for page jump menu

3.Take a especially optimized snapshot for 10ER's that will yield a very small JPG that features both text and pictures.

The resulting optimized content will be uploaded and made freely available at a "Google library" the content will be downloaded to SD cards whenever a connection is available. Otherwise, SD will be loaded with content in mass and then shipped to remote locations saving space and costs as cargo. (even only one master SD card would be shipped to remote locations and then its contents copied to other pre-shipped SD cards and 10ER's (Page number may increase substantially due to automatic font adjustments for some material)


This will be further enhanced with the Teacher Kit contents:

1.One customized satellite USB satellite phone with writing-erasing and online capabilities

2.One USB multi SD card “loader” used to write 20 SD cards at once

3.20-40 10ER's

Then the teacher in a remote location will be able to download content to the SD card through the customized satellite phone then make several copies for to the whole class using the Multi SD card "loader"

4.1.1 Intentionally added features and Default Integrated E-books

All 10ER's will have a default internal SD card with conten available in all featured languages or countries where it is shipped to. The initial proposed default library will be as follows:

1. Basic operating instructions for the teacher (how to instruct the class on the 10ER functions) all in one screen.

2.Visual alphabet teaching aids (core tool for literacy lessons that will feature an image of the letter together with its sound and a noun that starts with that letter. A second set with less simplified drawings will also be included for more mature students These teaching aids may to a lesser degree used for very basic foreign language lessons.

3.Simplified UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Document If the involved parties and countries agree then this document may be included to generate early awareness and respect towards universally accepted rights of the child

4. Mini First Aid e-book The contents should focus in the most common accidents and immediate treatment of injuries only always stating that a Doctor should be contacted whenever possible.

No exclusions allowed with the previous three items. They should be featured in all languages.

Optional: An Encyclopedic Abridged Dictionary for each language This last item should be considered as the least likely to be included due to the fact that a convenient dictionary may not be small in size and may limit the inclusion of one dictionary for each featured language or that there may not be a suitable free dictionary for all languages. No exclusions allowed, if only one dictionary is not available then no dictionaries should be included as default internal material. They will be independently supplied in external SD card form.

4.1.2 Power consumption

Due to the nature of the electrophoretic - e-paper displays together with the internal "shake" generator the 10ER are expected to be stand alone units.



4.1.3 Display

As previously mentioned, it will be a black and white, high contrast, extremely low power, electrophoretic - e-paper display. This core element is the only one that needs to be highly subsidized in the initaila stages of the project.


4.1.4 Storage

External: Removable SD card only.

Internal: Non removable default library contents will also be SD card based. Even in the event of the internal memory being removed the device would still be able to perfectly perform all functions with external SD media. )



4.1.5 Enclosure

Rugged 2 mm thick platic with internal rubber cushion bed and outer exchangeable rubber band that will provide furter protection to drops. The proposed model will only have one movable part which will be the protective cover. It will not have mechanical hinges but a stripe of the same material used for safety belts in cars. This will provide high resistance and flexibility the cover will therefore open from the bottom to the top and fold in the back it will remain in place due to its shape and 2 metal pieces inside the protective cover that will provide intant slide in action though the use of 2 magnets. When closed the same 2 metal pieces wil provide immediate automatic magnetic close action. The cover lowest end will also feature a second simple mechanism for long closed periods: It will slide in make amechanicak click (similar to the cap in first generation ipod shuffle) to avoid accidental damage this low edge mechanism corners will be made of semi flexible plastic that will allow easy release even if forced to open improperly (In the unlikely case magnets may impact the display performance in the long run they should be avoided, even if they can be successfully isolated within the device that may not apply to cargo in high quantities


4.1.6 Integration with OLPC

Since the OLPC already has e-reader capabilities and to avoid redundancies in use, the only 10EB-OLPC initial proposed integration would have only one (due to the higher cost) OLPC for the teacher and several cheaper 10EB for the class, thus, the OLPC would act as “mother unit” due to its writing capabilities to load lessons, books, tasks and homework for the “child units”/10EB’s for the students. It is therefore, proposed to ship one USB multi SD card “loader” used to write 20 SD cards at once since it is taken for granted that for a teacher it would be more practical and time effective to prepare several cards for a whole class at once instead of writing them one by one. A customized low cost cell phone with an SD card slot is also proposed to allow remote data transfer of very small image files. The teacher will dial a number look for a website to download an e-book, the data transfer will start and will be stored on the SD card, once finished, the teacher will use the “mother” SD card to copy contents into several “child” SD cards. The customized cell phone will have a USB port and erase write capabilities so that the teacher can connect it to the USB multi SD card “loader” and also erase and write the contents of one of several SD cards at once without the need for a computer

The same “Mother-child” limited integration approach may apply to wireless blue tooth optional adapters that would connect to the SD card slot in the 10ED. This idea despite being convenient for the teacher to beam screenshots of lessons created on the OLPC for the 10EB class may result impractical due to the high price of blue tooth devices and their battery needs driving too much power from the 10EB and leading to constant shacking to recharge the device and becoming an unnecessary distraction/interruption. If it ever became viable, it would only be considered as an external accessory for the 10EB connected through the SD card slot. It is therefore logical that the ten dollar e-reader design will attempt to mirror and resemble the one hundred dollar laptop design to make the eventual “upgrade” from e-reader to laptop a seemingly “natural” progression.

Since the E-reader will contain no operating system it is proposed it will feature a default library of essential literacy lessons to be used by teachers as teaching visual aids and that these “default” libraries will all be available so that they can be easily found and used regardless of the location thus maximizing the out-of-the-box functionality of the device.



4.1.7 Role of Different Companies

Quanta Computers Role Possibly a front runner for the assembly of the device in amss production

Google Role

Google/wikipedia will provide a one-click online only application that will:

-Convert any complex text file, image file, website into jpg/png snapshots

-Snapshots will be kept in an online open source library: free access: anybody can submit/prepare materials

-one step drag to sd card action converts original on server file into one standarized optimized image file so there is always a backup and a 100% compatible file with the reader

-all processing power dependent conversion is done before hand using remote servers and existing personal computers, therefore the reader does not need a processor for specific tasks No special character compatibility issues, no OS crash, no headaches no mess


Motorola role

Possible provider for the proposed customized satellite phone for data transfer for remote locations and master "mother" writing erasing capabilities via USB

Sipix Role

Possibly the front runner for the low cost subsidized electrophoretic display to be produced in the order of several hundred thusand units in initial stages.


5 Criticism

Cheap-Disposable-Low-quality Toy Argument

As long as the 10ER's efficiently deliver the educational content they were designed for, it will be irrelevant if the end result product does not aesthetically appeal the general public. The 10ER project goal is not to please mainstream consumers but to provide education for those in need.


Food is More Important Than E-readers Argument

Better crops are a result of better agricultural practices, usually found in books. Also, it will always be a priority to feed 30 children with the same 10 USD first. However, it will always be desirable to have several hundred trained people, able to save thousands of lives in 2 two or 3 decades. Possibly, those future doctors may have been children who had access to some traditional books or to E-readers/computers.


Learn Garbage Argument

Applicable to unverified Wikipedia articles that would theoretically be downloaded to an SD card and displayed on a childs' 10ER. Given to the unavoidable nature of open editing articles few articles would qualify as 100% reliable especially when considering the fact that SD card content is static and cannot be updated as it happens with online content leading to the possibility of unreliable content being delivered to children in remote locations. However, most e-books are prone to a certain degree of unauthorized editing, this being much less likely than wikipedia articles

5.1 Technological aspects

Mainly the 10ER project has become possible due to the advantages that the electrophoretic-e-paper offer


5.2 Environmental concerns

Currently, the Nickel metal hydride batteries (NiMH)chemical composition offer a much safer option when comapred with batteries that contain Cadmium. The Electrophoretic display contents are recyclable studies demonstrating their impact on the environment are yet to be carried out due to the technologies' fairly recent entry into the mass produced product market.


5.3 Good use of money

The options offered by the 10ER cannot be compared with the OLPC features and capabilities, rather the 10ER is being proposed as an entry level low cost mass educational device that will eventually lead to the OLPC or mre capable devices

5.4 Price

Currently expected to have a 2009 release price of 8-10 USD


5.5 Theft and resale

Due to its lower cost, specific capabilities and black and white display the 10ER may not appeal thieves as much as a X-0 1/OLPC but they are expected to be seen as an inexpensive option to higher end E-readers and therefore resold in black markets.

I'm a single mother of two. I know how hard it is to find a safe kid friendly computer. I understand wanting to help kids poorer then our own,But we have families that are just barely getting by here in the US. I feel these kids should have the same chances that other kids have. That is why i was suggesting for the US to buy two. One for their child and one for a child where it is needed. Most people like to help if they know thay are going to get something in return. I wouldn't mind paying $200.00 for a laptop for my son; knowing I'll be helping another child else where. I really think more people would be willing to get involved.

I hope this will help differents goverments rethink how their youth is being helped.

Intel explicó los alcances de su acuerdo con la Fundación “Una Laptop por Niño”

En una conferencia de prensa realizada en Argentina Wilton Agatstein, Gerente General del Grupo de Plataformas para Mercados Emergentes de Intel Corporation, y Esteban Galuzzi, Gerente General de Intel para el Cono Sur, explicaron a los medios los alcances preliminares del acuerdo alcanzado con la organización One Laptop Per Chile (OLPC).

Intel y One Laptop per Child (OLPC - siglas en inglés de “Una Laptop por Niño”), organización sin fines de lucro cuya misión consiste en facilitar el acceso a los niños más pobres y de zonas remotas del mundo a formas modernas de educación y conocimiento, proveyéndolos de laptops conectadas, de bajo costo y robustas, anunciaron un acuerdo para llevar en conjunto los beneficios de la tecnología a los países en desarrollo, a través de la sinergia entre sus respectivos programas. Bajo este acuerdo, Intel y OLPC explorarán diversas formas de colaboración que involucrarán tecnología y contenidos educativos. Intel además se incorporará al consejo de OLPC.

What is wanted by educators is an interface to the OLPC computer AMD CPU which is cross platform. Such an interface is the small c interpreter to compile programs for FRACTRAN. FRACTRAN is a prime machine, a pi machine, a multiply machine and addition machine in the language of fractions, A/B, where A is the input register and B is the output register. This elegant mathematical construct is often called the CONWAY machine. Along with FRACTRAN are the theory of numbers in primes, the finite series of pi, and the EULER PRODUCT which is the zeta sum of primes. This leads to the Reimann Hypothesis (RH)and the PRIME NUMBER THEOREM. All of which is an elegant approach to mathematics and number theory. It should be taught school children the world around.
