Forth journeyman. Very excited to see XO using Open Firmware with Mitch Bradley on board.

I've also worked a bit on the lightweight Xlib replacement, XCB. It might be a good fit to the XO's constrained resources.

I hope to someday see one of these gorgeous laptops in the wild. At the next OSCON, perhaps?

  • Yes! In fact, IBM donated booth space both to my own rocketry club (http://psas.pdx.edu/) and the OSU Open Source Lab, which brought four of their XO prototypes. The XOs were mobbed thoughout the entire conference.

November 12 came, and I made my purchase early in the morning (my nephew's birthday, as it happens). I'll also need to order a developer key if I want to play around at the OFW prompt.

First edit from the laptop itself. Rather slow. Nephew was too cranky to use it, but I can now certainly attest that it is kid proof! --IanOsgood 20:04, 21 December 2007 (EST)
I also found out to my chagrin that there is not yet a version of LOGO being shipped on the laptop. The turtle-graphics activity Turtle Art uses a visual programming metaphor with many limitations compared to Logo. Etoys and Scratch however look very promising, substituting object-oriented Squeak Smalltalk for the underpinnings, instead of functional Lisp.
