About Me

Hi! My name is Doug Mayeux. I am an American, currently living abroad in Kathmandu Nepal. I was born in Long Beach, California, and grew up in Dallas, Texas.

At 27, I like to think I have lived a somewhat more worldly life than most Americans my age. After graduating from high school, I studied as an opera major at Ohio State University for a year and a half, before returning to Dallas. Six months later, I joined the Air Force, and served as a weather forecaster for 6 years. My assignments were Biloxi, Missippi; Sembach, Germany; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Anchorage, Alaska; and Ali Al Salem, Kuwait. I was honorably discharged in July, 2007 as a Staff Sergeant (E-5).

My university education is still underway. Currently I am a Senior at the University of Texas at Austin, where I am studying Government and History. My other schools of attendance are Ohio State University; Richland Community College (Dallas, Texas); the Community College of the Air Force; The Air Force Academy; the University of Alaska, Anchorage; and American Military University. I have associates degrees in meteorology and government, and a certification in counter-terrorism fundamentals.

I consider myself a liberal person. Furthermore, I believe that among other things, a government should provide universal health care and education. I am also, however, a strong believer in democracy, but believe the primary purpose of a democratic government should be to in an equitable manor ensure equal opportunity for all. Obviously rising costs of education and health care make the opportunity for success apparently prohibitively expensive. While much progress has been made, it is relatively obvious to me that for true equality on a global scale, let alone national scale, a re-tooling of priorities is absolutely necessary. I am of the opinion that enough empirical data exists to demonstrate that military intervention (especially proactive) is not the solution for world peace.

I am a political scientist, so I apologize for my diatribe of sorts, but I did want to at least give you a taste for what I believe in.

This summer, I am living in Kathmandu with my lovely wife Bridgett. I am volunteering for OLE Nepal, and will be documenting their efforts, testing software, helping to build a virtual library, and doing pretty much anything else they ask of me. I am especially excited, because this is the first opportunity I have had to work for an NGO, and actually make, on a daily basis, a difference in the world. There is more to come, but for the time being, look for my on the OLE Nepal [blog.olenepal.org blog] as well as my own Summer in Kathmandu [kathmandusummer.wordpress.com blog].

Namaste!
