Girl's Mentoring Centers in Mauritania both supplement government schooling for young females, as well as provide the only education for youth who either can't access or can't afford schooling. GMC's provide both practical and academic courses. Practical courses include: fabric dying, cooking, sewing, female hygiene, HIV awareness and other health issues. More academic courses include: sciences, language learning, art, and private tutoring in scholastic subjects. Peace Corps volunteers as well as Mauritanian locals primarily run these centers. However, other community sectors periodically run seminars and conferences at the GMCs, such as the annual Eco-Health Camp.
