Things are wiki
Everything is editable.
- View source - every activity and item has a view-source hook, which lets you see how it was generated, who made it, and how to change it and quickly see the results of your changes.
- Editing and commenting tools - altering, remixing, and commenting are fundamental things we should be doing with every part of our system. All need ways to pass on edits or comments.
- Versioning - everything that is editable has versions. A need for semi-permanent links to specific versions, and a way to see the patches applied or observe diffs between versions, is a natural corollary to this.
Actions have community
Collaboration is deeply woven into everything done with the system.
- Community at every scale - Local, group, and global actions all have community, implicit and explicit. Some communities are based around tools used, some around the type of collaboration involved, some around the act of publishing itself.
- Transparent sharing and aggregation - Sharing is the default state for activities. Views of the network show all that can be shared; published works are naturally searchable by others; materials shared locally have a default way to aggregate on local supernodes and regional servers.
- Actions and materials produced are rarely 'owned' by one person; authorship and history are carefully tracked and boldly displayed.
Beauty inspires creation
Inspiration and simple tools are the only prerequisites for creation.
- Beauty is in everyday life - there is beauty everywhere; in nature, in the body, in numbers, in color and form and sound, in simple ideas and actions. Demonstrations of this inspire creation and offer a hook for identifying new things with a parent concept.
- The world is full of wonderous things - we all share a planet, an ecology, and a heritage... and a sky. This should be actively displayed, in image and concept. Maps and visualizations of the earth and sky and of our society should have a prominent place in our library.
- Art takes many forms - as a society, we have developed art and music for centuries. today we produce millions of beautiful photographs and recordings a year, many of which would have been priceless works of art a century ago. As a device, the laptop is an excellent conduit for this kind of information; this should be presented in breadth to transcend cultural boundaries without language.
