Status

As of late 2010, OLPC has started working on a rebase of the OLPC OS platform onto Fedora 14, for the XO-1 and XO-1.5 laptops.

The build is relatively stable but has some obvious bugs, and lacks testing.

We are looking for experienced testers to help find and report bugs. (via the olpc and sugar bug trackers)

More concrete plans for release scope and schedule are expected to be finalized in late December 2010.

Download

Development builds are available here:

http://build.laptop.org/F14/

New builds are announced on the devel mailing list, e.g. "F14 os3 development image released (XO-1 and XO-1.5)"

To install from Open Firmware on an unlocked XO-1.5, download the .zd file to a USB drive and run:

ok fs-update u:\osXX.zd

To install from Open Firmware on an unlocked XO-1, download the .onu and .uim files and run:

ok update-nand u:\osXX.onu

New features

This list is unlikely to grow significantly going forward - we're looking to focus on stabilization and get this out the door.

  • Fedora 14
  • Sugar 0.90
  • GNOME 2.32
  • Linux 2.6.35.9
  • XO-1 switched from jffs2 to partitioned image: jffs2 boot, ubifs root
  • XO-1.5 switched from ext3 to ext4
  • Old OS images are not retained after olpc-update: http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/devel/2010-September/029889.html
  • Activation initramfs split from "run" initramfs (for faster boot)
  • "Run" initramfs slimmed down to 1.9mb (no python in any non-activation bootpath) (for faster boot)
  • Package list trimmed for a smaller image (even though we've likely still grown from the F11 days, as Fedora gets bigger and bigger)
  • Switched from non-Fedora batterymon to batti as GNOME battery monitor
