[ PROJECT #1 - IT in Education - Benin ]

<CanoeBerry> Plz all help critique, mentor and/or vote for Project #1 here:
<CanoeBerry> IT in Education - Benin
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=77626
<CanoeBerry> SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF http://olpcMAP.net &
<CanoeBerry> http://j.mp/6UhCtd
<CanoeBerry> Requests 1 XOs over 10 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> The project objective is to help children and the public learn to
<CanoeBerry> use technology
<CanoeBerry> and find information using computers and the Internet.
<CanoeBerry> We provide services such as:
<CanoeBerry> - Literacy courses
<CanoeBerry> - Basic Computer Usage
<CanoeBerry> - Word Processing
<CanoeBerry> - Using Email
<CanoeBerry> - Using the Internet
<CanoeBerry> - Using Computers and the Internet to search for jobs / write résumés
<CanoeBerry> - Specialized Internet search classes on specific topic (such as health
<CanoeBerry> care, agriculture, etc...)
* Improv  has joined #olpc-meeting
<CanoeBerry> I'm willing to give this Benin group the benefit of the doubt.
<Improv> Hello
<CanoeBerry> With a starter kit of 1 or 2 XO-1s.
<CanoeBerry> Improv: hi!
* Cerlyn  has joined #olpc-meeting
<Improv> This was kind of short notice for a meeting; don't have a lot of time to chat right now
<CanoeBerry> Any objections to Benin's admittedly very loose proposal?
<Improv> But I'm Pat Gunn (at CMU)
<CanoeBerry> With a mentor let's give Benin a tentative OK?
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> TENTATIVE APPROVAL for Project #1 (Benin) if basic mentor/mentoring found.

[ PROJECT #2 - Village Education Project - Ecuador / Swarthmore, Pennsylvania ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #2 - please all critique, mentor and vote for:
<CanoeBerry> Village Education Project - Ecuador / Swarthmore, Pennsylvania
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=77660
<CanoeBerry> SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF http://olpcMAP.net &
<CanoeBerry> http://j.mp/6UhCtd
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10-20 XOs over 3 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives: (excerpt)
<CanoeBerry> The new computer curriculum aims to give the children basic computing
<CanoeBerry> literacy, including the skills they will need in high school (for
<CanoeBerry> example, touch typing, word processing, email and Internet research
<CanoeBerry> techniques) to place them on a more level playing field with their more
<CanoeBerry> privileged classmates and to ensure that they have a solid foundation to
<CanoeBerry> build on in their high school classes. OLPC’s XO laptops are especially
<CanoeBerry> good for this purpose due to their portability, ease of charging, and
<CanoeBerry> simple interface. More specifically, since our summer program ends with
<CanoeBerry> a final exam, we aim to have at least 90 percent of our students pass
<CanoeBerry> the exam on the computer curriculum. We are starting literally at the
<CanoeBerry> beginning with these kids - most have never used a mouse - so the
<CanoeBerry> outcomes will be especially visible not only in hard outcomes like their
<CanoeBerry> test scores, but also in soft outcomes like quality of school projects,
<CanoeBerry> and general readiness for school.
<CanoeBerry> Lots of solid community-centric work here it appears -- and basic awareness of Sugar?
<CanoeBerry> Who can mentor? I'm happy with the look of this (maybe even 10 XO-1s sooner/later) if their understanding of Sugar/OLPC principles etc is confirmed:
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Core_Principles
<CanoeBerry> Thoughts?
<CanoeBerry> Objections?
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> TENTATIVE APPROVAL (for 2-XO laptop starter kit initially) if mentoring/mentor found.

[ PROJECT #3 - Ecole Mixte and Friends - Gonaive, Haiti ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #3 - please all critique/mentor/vote for:
<CanoeBerry> Ecole Mixte and Friends - Gonaive, Haiti
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=77921
<CanoeBerry> http://friendsacademy1810.org
<CanoeBerry> http://sbsgrade3kids.blogspot.com
<CanoeBerry> SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF http://olpcMAP.net &
<CanoeBerry> http://j.mp/6UhCtd
<CanoeBerry> Requests 5-9 XOs over 36 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Friends Academy is seeking to establish a long-term partnership with
<CanoeBerry> Ecole Mixte Choubert Alexis in Gonaives, Haiti, an accredited school
<CanoeBerry> that was devastated in the 2010 earthquake. The school would be one of
<CanoeBerry> several schools in our network. Our objective is to collaborate with
<CanoeBerry> students around the world on the kinds of projects that require
<CanoeBerry> teamwork,
<CanoeBerry> complex communication, creativity, technical competence, and other 21st
<CanoeBerry> century skills. These projects can take many forms. Imagine students at
<CanoeBerry> one school creating storyboards, students at another school designing
<CanoeBerry> the artwork, students at a third school composing the music, a forth
<CanoeBerry> class producing the final video. This kind of project and those like it
<CanoeBerry> differ from the usual correspondences and pen pal exchanges that
<CanoeBerry> teachers
<CanoeBerry> initiate with their international partners. We will also have these
<CanoeBerry> initial exchanges, but expect more out of these partnerships in the
<CanoeBerry> long-term. The projects we propose provide students with genuine
<CanoeBerry> learning experiences. They also build friendships, cement relationships,
<CanoeBerry> and bridge cultures. They require intense and sustained collaboration.
<CanoeBerry> Apps like[ http://translate.google.com/ ] translate.google.com can help
<CanoeBerry> with the language barrier. Email, wikis, and blogs allow us to network,
<CanoeBerry> share and collaborate. These projects allow children to share their
<CanoeBerry> stories, experiences, culture, values, ideas, and dreams. We believe
<CanoeBerry> projects like these can be powerful and transformative. Students can
<CanoeBerry> share, learn, and grow together. Technically, we hope they can build
<CanoeBerry> on their skills. These projects tie in to our school's vision "to
<CanoeBerry> develop students who have strong global literacy" and to one of our
<CanoeBerry> technology goals "global communication and global awareness."
<CanoeBerry> Teachers at the other schools will carve out their own goals. For one
<CanoeBerry> teacher, these collaborations might be an avenue to teach English, for
<CanoeBerry> others, it might be a way to teach the writing process, art, music,
<CanoeBerry> or theater.

<CanoeBerry> http://j.mp/6UhCtd
<CanoeBerry> Requests 1 XO-1 and 1 XO-1.5 over undetermined months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> [In order to] help with OS packaging/customisation/builds. For example,
<CanoeBerry> I would like to help with making smaller images without GNOME by
<CanoeBerry> verifying the dependencies for the sugar components, and I would be
<CanoeBerry> willing to otherwise assist in tracking down bugs in the system releases
<CanoeBerry> and participate in meetings/Bugzilla to this effect. As a systems
<CanoeBerry> programmer/admin, I know Fedora/RHEL/CentOS very well, and I have
<CanoeBerry> experience customising them.
<CanoeBerry> Improv: would you like to intro yr work?
<CanoeBerry> Sounds great :)
<Improv> CanoeBerry: That's me, and I know some laptop.org folks (e.g. sj) and was going to get an XO-3 to help with hardware things when the hardware becomes available. I'd like an XO-1.75 as well, if/when available.
<CanoeBerry> Great! Even if those 2 newer "potential" models are not available quite yet :)
<Improv> I'm not sure if this was the best way to request the hardware though, and would be happy to donate to offset cost.
<CanoeBerry> No prob. Donations always accepted, but separately: http://laptop.org/action/donate
<CanoeBerry> Improv: Any recent updates to where you want to take this work?
<Improv> I'd be happy to help with everything from drivers/kernel stuff to general systems work.
<CanoeBerry> +1 is my vote, if it wasn't obvious.
<CanoeBerry> Improv: are you on devel@laptop.org ?
<Improv> My time for drivers/kernel stuff is more limited than general systems work because it's more involved.
<CanoeBerry> http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/devel
<Improv> No. Maybe I should be?
<Improv> Oh, I've read the archives there occasionally
<Improv> I should sign up for it in digest form.
<CanoeBerry> Got it. Join support-gang@laptop.org if you want higher level kid/teacher-relevant stuff too.
<Improv> I am not a Python wizard, more a systems wrangler. Still might be interesting.
<CanoeBerry> I can add you -- sg@l.o is privacy-walled so we can exchange kids photos / phone numbers etc.
<CanoeBerry> Let me know anytime.
<CanoeBerry> All: objections?
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<Improv> In any case, I would like my application to generally imply that I'm willing to help with beta hardware and other systems releases.
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> APPROVED.
<CanoeBerry> Thanks!

<CanoeBerry> SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF http://olpcMAP.net &
<CanoeBerry> http://j.mp/6UhCtd
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10 XOs over 12 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives: (excerpts)
<CanoeBerry> Theobjective of this project is to create a yearlong extracurricular
<CanoeBerry> academic andmentorship program for 10 children—mostly girls—who have
<CanoeBerry> been rescued fromslavery or abandonment in Nepal.Through the use of the
<CanoeBerry> laptops, the program will encompass a wide-rangingcurriculum that will
<CanoeBerry> enhance the children's understanding of themselves and theworld and will
<CanoeBerry> foster cognitive, psychological and emotional development.
<CanoeBerry> The curriculum will be divided into 3 parts; each part will take 4
<CanoeBerry> months to complete:
<CanoeBerry> The first part of the curriculum focuses on geography, peoples of
<CanoeBerry> the world, cultures and religions.
<CanoeBerry> The second part focuses on government, law and human rights.
<CanoeBerry> The third part focuses on health, the environment and basic science.
<CanoeBerry> Create a mentorship program between older and younger children in
<CanoeBerry> order to maximize the program's benefits for years to come.
<CanoeBerry> Enhance student interaction with each other through the use of
<CanoeBerry> technology, fostering an innovative learning experience outside the
<CanoeBerry> classroom.
<CanoeBerry> The children will use the laptops to read given assignments, participate
<CanoeBerry> in exercises, as well as to write their own newspapers and create their
<CanoeBerry> own storybooks. Participants are responsible to teach some of what they
<CanoeBerry> learn to the other children in the orphanage, fostering
<CanoeBerry> communication and
<CanoeBerry> mentorship skills. For this project, Children of Tomorrow is partnering
<CanoeBerry> with Nepal OrphansHome (NOH), a nonprofit organization in Kathmanduthat
<CanoeBerry> operates homes for children who’ve been orphaned, abandoned or
<CanoeBerry> rescued from bonded labor. www.nepalorphanshome.org
<LaurenY> Hi, this is me. I'm an English professor and journalist and very dedicated to this project.
<CanoeBerry> LaurenY: You are also the most patient person I've ever met ;)
<CanoeBerry> Care to introduce yr work?
* Improv Quit (Quit: ircII EPIC4-2.10.1 -- Are we there yet?)
<CanoeBerry> Very Briefly.
<LaurenY> Hi there. This is me. I am an English professor and journalist, and totally dedicated to this project
<CanoeBerry> LaurenY: have you used the Sugar software?
<CanoeBerry> Have you joined any of the OLPC-NYC events?
<LaurenY> No, but my partner has. I am creating the curriculum.
<LaurenY> No, I'd love to join any events available.
<CanoeBerry> Is yr partner subscribed to OLPC NYC's mailing list here http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/olpc-nyc ?
<CanoeBerry> Can I add you?
<LaurenY> No, but I can make sure we do that right away. Yes, please add me!
<CanoeBerry> We're meeting tomorrow 8am-1pm at the Humanitarian Free/Open Workshop at Bergen Community College, care to join :-)
<CanoeBerry> Too techie perhaps!
<CanoeBerry> Northern NJ, in Paramus.
<LaurenY> Sure...I am always interested in learning
<LaurenY> I just want to help these children get the best education possible, so I am always open to learning as much as possible!
<CanoeBerry> Did you contact http://olenepal.org and what did they say?
<LaurenY> Yes. I actually drove to Boston and met with Rabi at Harvard when he was in the US a few weeks ago. I am going to work with him, but he said he does not have 10 laptops to lend
<CanoeBerry> PS don't hesitate to join us 7:30AM @ Secaucus Jct Station if you want a free ride tomorrow morning.
<CanoeBerry> Cool, you met Rabi!
<CanoeBerry> I could bring you a few laptops tomorrow morning to get started if nec?
<LaurenY> That would be terrific.
<LaurenY> Rabi was very impressive. He was speaking at Kennedy School of Govt, and we met for coffee beforehand. I picked his brain about his projects, and learned a lot
<LaurenY> We've been in touch since and I'm going to do some literacy workshops for his schools when I start my project.
<CanoeBerry> Are you sure you're able to wake up so early tomorrow?! Would be wonderful but just checking -- would you drive direct to 400 Paramus Drive (Bergen Comm Coll) ?
<CanoeBerry> Wicked.
<LaurenY> Yes, I would drive straight there, because I'm outside of the city and it's just easier to drive.
<CanoeBerry> If you drive direct, meet 8am @ 400 Paramus Dr.
<CanoeBerry> If you take public transit, meet *BY* 7:30am @ Secaucus Junction Station, at the car pickup at the bottom of the escalators.
<LaurenY> Okay, that sounds great. I'm so excited to get started.
<CanoeBerry> Let me know.
<LaurenY> I will just drive to the community college and find you guys. Who should I ask for?
<CanoeBerry> All: thoughts? objections? mentoring, etc to help along this project?
<CanoeBerry> Ask for OLPC NYC / Princeton Engineers Without Borders.
<CanoeBerry> Thanks!

<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<LaurenY> Okay. I look forward to it. Thank you so much.

<CanoeBerry> The event requires RSVPs, I will RSVP for you but just let me know.
<LaurenY> Sure, I'm definitely going to come. I think it'll be a great learning experience. I can pay whatever it is.
<CanoeBerry> No payment required except the sweat of yr brow!
<CanoeBerry> Serious about that part ;)
<CanoeBerry> Start your blog today at http://wordpress.com if poss.
<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #6 now..

<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Although it has been a really long time since the computer was
<CanoeBerry> developed,
<CanoeBerry> the computer has become an object of great importance to day, be it any
<CanoeBerry> workplace and any profession. The uses and applications of computers are
<CanoeBerry> vast and un-ending. Computer literacy has become a pre-requisite while
<CanoeBerry> appearing for almost every odd interview. Since it is a known fact that
<CanoeBerry> today’s children will grow up to become responsible adults of tomorrow,
<CanoeBerry> they must be introduced to the basic technology that currently rules
<CanoeBerry> the world.
<CanoeBerry> According to that reality we have gote that ideas to make this
<CanoeBerry> project in
<CanoeBerry> order to providing this knowledge to our children is like preparing them
<CanoeBerry> for the future.
<CanoeBerry> But According to the successive wars here in our country (DR Congo) many
<CanoeBerry> children does't use these software because of life is more hardful,
<CanoeBerry> parents are not able to pay laptop, it means that the laptops are using
<CanoeBerry> only for the noble and rich families..
<CanoeBerry> That is the reason why our Project will allow those vulnerable children
<CanoeBerry> (all kind of children without eny discrimination )to introducing them to
<CanoeBerry> that new technology so that This will give them an introduction to the
<CanoeBerry> syllabus that he will be taught in further professional courses and to
<CanoeBerry> allow them to get a job...
<CanoeBerry> Our Project is from the Bible "Paulm 30:11 that says, you have turned
<CanoeBerry> my mourning into dancing you have sut off my sacclother and clothed me
<CanoeBerry> with gladness"
<CanoeBerry> Really we need to help our community with this new system of education.
<CanoeBerry> I don't understand this project, and how it advances OLPC principles etc here:
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Core_Principles
<CanoeBerry> But perhaps i need to read more.
<CanoeBerry> Needs strong mentoring.
<CanoeBerry> I vote -1 until we learn more about their about and vision.
<CanoeBerry> 20 is above our guidelines regardless.
