Generations all must be online
Sincere congratulations to OLPC and Nicholas Negroponte. I left an executive position in corporate America to help to overcome the access, skills and intimidation for seniors to the Internet &emdash; now seven years later we have brought new meaning to the lives of tens of thousands of people in their 70 &endash; 80s 90s 100s (oldest user turns 104 on Monday) throughout 48 states and Canada. Next steps: England, India and the EU. Anyone interested in spearheading a non-profit distribution of Generations on line (www.generationsonline.org) kindly contact me: Tobey Gordon Dichter; tobeydichter@att.net.
- One issue regarding OLPC and the "silver-haired" generation is the size of the display: while it will be relatively high resolution (~200 DPI in eBook mode), it will be small (only 7" diagonal), which means the density of information per page with large fonts will be relatively low. Other than that, I think it will be a nice experience of the elderly. FYI, if you have never seen it, check out The Melrose Mirror, which just celebrated its tenth year of publication. - Something which might be worth looking at in relation to older people and reading is that black lettering upon a yellow background may be preferable to black lettering upon a white background. William Overington 3 May 2006 0852Z
- Black on yellow is a help, but font size is a much bigger factor. As far as UI, many of the things we are doing to slim down the interface will be good for seniors as well as children (and everyone in between). Walter 09:49, 3 May 2006 (EDT)
