Step 0: Check for existing organizations

Make sure that you aren't reinventing the wheel in your region. It's hard to get a group started, and if somebody else has already done a lot of the work, jump on board!

Groups (groups - less formalized)

Chapters (list existing chapters)

Step 1: Set up an interest group

Based around geography - a physical group, not just an online collective of interests

(yay, meetups, playing with XOs, discussion, etc)

After time, you may see more structure emerge from your group. Explicit projects may start being planned out and worked on. At this point, you should consider formalizing your relationship with OLPC by forming a chapter.

(Review the advantages and responsibility of being a chapter on Chapters) --> Discussion on Talk page

Step 2: Becoming a Chapter

What do I have to do? Contact User:? with a chapter proposal.

Remember to include the following:

  • Your main contact person and phone number
  • Resources (people, skills - technical/educational knowledge?)
  • Short-term vision (what are you doing now?)
  • Long-term vision (overarching goals/objectives of your organization, future work)

Advantages

What You Can Now Do

  • Help with initial contact with government and academic bodies
  • Act as representatives of OLPC at conferences and events
  • Indicate formal OLPC affiliation for fundraising and networking
  • Attend annual chapter meetings

  • Get XOs for programs/development

Responsibilities

  • Help OLPC as needed - for example, respond to requests to handle local press
  • Send bi-annual updates to User:? so chapter projects and progress can be compiled at Chapters
