16:43 < _sj_> nn is taking q&a for the next 25 minutes
16:43 < _sj_> a quick intro of hwere people in the room are from
16:43 < _sj_> (new projects in guatemala, nigeria, ghana; uruguay, nepal)
16:44 < _sj_> nn: noting why we had to cut back; economics of the season
16:44 < cjb> reposition camera, maybe?
16:44 < _sj_> and the new laptop economies (ed - what does this mean for lowercase olpc? a good analysis would be interesting)
16:44 < _sj_> will try
16:44 < _sj_> (and hi jrb, jpt, tinker)
16:45 < dirakx> we need to see nn on the cam ..
16:45 < _sj_> two economies of sponsorship - what is supported by sponsors (some of whom dropped out) and a drop in g1g1 support
16:45 < _sj_> despite the 500k laptops backordered, we have these temporary problems
16:45 < _sj_> andrius : (from an online lithuanian think tank)
16:45 < _sj_> we're good at leveraging human participation. we meet people haflway.
16:46 < _sj_> I see 10k, 100ks of teachres
16:46 < _sj_> maybe 10% or 1% who would love a channel into the world, and want to do something.
16:46 < _sj_> that's not open to the world (now)
16:47 < _sj_> I want to leverage that asset -- getting new people integrated into schools (with ed and others), feeding positive things back to olpc.
16:47 < _sj_> andrius : I'm working on open source math learning. olpc might benefit, but a lot of others would as well - -say the teachers. so instead of foucsing
on primary materials, hep teachers master something... if they do, the children will benefit.
16:49 < _sj_> question about diplomas.
16:49 < _sj_> edch: what should we ask about what you know that we don't? nn: most of what isn't public is third-party sources of funding
16:49 < _sj_> where funders want things to be private until they are fixed
16:50 -!- |tanya| [n=tanya@pool-72-93-65-80.bstnma.fios.verizon.net] has joined #olpc
16:50 < _sj_> luis : what about deployments in latin america, those already there? about the spinoff idea?
16:50 < _sj_> what does this mean for us?
16:50 -!- J5 [n=quintice@c-66-31-41-146.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] has joined #olpc
16:50 < _sj_> nn : it will be very specific, not just another area
16:51 < _sj_> 'spinoff' is a bit dramatic, it sounds like it will be so independent that we are washing hands of responsibility;
16:51 < _sj_> instead it is to focus on [better] support, specifically with peru and uruguay
16:51 < _sj_> based in miami, with strong participation from uru (in tech), peru (in education), and a sales/marketing group -- which we wouldn't normally describe as
              such within olpc
16:52 < _sj_> but to work with countries that expect this; also the min. of defense has been a customer in colombia.
16:52 < _sj_> so lat am will be strengthened enormously by having (a specific body to deal with)
16:52 < _sj_> I assure you there is a lot of focus there. 80% of all laptops are in lat am. ..
16:53 < _sj_> luis: I wonder. there is a possibility - we know many people and...
16:53 < _sj_> erikg : it sounds as though what olpc latam is doing is what many tech people who were laid off at olpc were working towards? question: if this is
true, will those people be involved? how will we repair the social nets in place?
16:53 < _sj_> erikg: I don't konw rodrigo a, have never talked to him -- but I know many people in deployments, and has been woring with people on suport issues in
              deployments.
16:54 < _sj_> how do we work with the human resources we have in the community to make this new project work out -- whatever is going on with tech in uruguay, for
              instance
16:55 < _sj_> nn : one thing that has hapepend is a discussion with peru and latu about ways to have people who were laid off get directly involved with what is
happening there, perhaps moving to lat.am
16:55 < _sj_> but an 'olpc americas' group will be more focused on support [primarily locally staffed]
16:56 < _sj_> and olpc is still maintaining its core weekly support calls with uru and peru, including with emiliano and others
16:57 < _sj_> (that's what reuben is here for)
16:57 < _sj_> erikg : talking about how support is needed for good sustenance
16:58 -!- J5 [n=quintice@c-66-31-41-146.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] has quit ["Ex-Chat"]

16:59 < _sj_> q: how are we supporting 'give a school'?
17:01 < _sj_> nn : can make time on Friday to come back --
17:01 < _sj_> people can write questions down briefly, and send them; and we can answer them in more detail.
