Tutorial for Offline Map Activity

Getting Started

  1. Close all activities except the Browse activity. This activity is in development and you may need to reboot.
  2. Download the Offline Map activity from http://haiti.latest.disaster-tool.appspot.com/OfflineMaps.xo
  3. Click to run OfflineMaps. The icon looks like a steering wheel or a spiderweb (not sure)
  4. Do not move the mouse. The activity will take some time to load. The loading animation of the cursor may stop for several seconds - as long as it continues to move, the activity is working.

Moving

  1. Use the + and - buttons to zoom in and out (magnify, demagnify)
  2. Use the arrow keys to move north, south, east, and west

Basic Search

  1. You can center on a city by typing its name in the Find box on the top of your screen, and pressing enter.
  2. Try Lagonav, Port au prince, and Jacmel. Dozens of cities' locations were provided by MINUSTAH (UN in Haiti)
  3. Bonus: searching does not require accents, capital letters, or hyphens

Adding a Photo

  1. In the Edit menu, find and click the {+} button
  2. Select a photo, video, or audio file from Record
  3. Your mouse now looks like a + sign. Click on the map to add a marker.
  4. A blue marker appears. Click it to view your photo/video/audio.

Opening KML

  2. Download MINUSTAH's list of hospitals from http://haiti.latest.disaster-tool.appspot.com/Hospitals.kml
  3. Save Hospitals.kml to your USB drive
  4. Insert the USB drive into your XO. Wait ~30 seconds for this to be detected.
  5. In the Edit menu, find and click the {+} button
  6. Select the USB drive, and type Hospitals in the search box.
  7. Select Hospitals
  8. To see the locations better, return to the Search menu and search for Port au Prince.
  9. Click any of the blue markers to read its contents

Content Search

  1. You can search all of your markers by their text content
  2. Return to the Search menu
  3. These searches are typed in the Tags: section. Type, then press enter.
  4. If you've loaded the Hospitals.kml file, search "Hospital Adventista" to locate this place.

Editing with other XOs

  • When you share the activity, other XOs see your text markers and edits
  • They also get markers from imported KML
  • They can edit your stuff as well.
