Necessity of VoIP
Is VoIP truly necessary for OLPC? I would think that the additional trouble and bandwith that would be associated with allowing verbal communication is not worth the possible educational gain. Besides, a restriction to the use of e-mail and instant messaging for communication would further encourage growth in literacy.
The only reason that I can think of at the top of my head that encourages VoIP would be for communication for those who are blind. Yet, I would think that whatever method used for allowing the blind to use the XO OLPC would be adequate for allowing the visually impaired to understand an e-mail or and instant message.
