[Quoth dynamic interactive fiction system] is an IF system which allows you to interactively create a game using conversational commands. It is amazing, just check out the demo and you'll understand. I think a system like this would be a lot more approachable to kids. It's done on top of squeak, and the license is MIT (perhaps you could talk to the developer about your common goals?).
