News

Feb 20, 2009 - Version 3 of COBBLE is released, close to our planned beta version. Cards, Die, Tokens, Boards and Bags and the chatbox are working, please test if you can, thanks!

Aug 15, 2008 - A new version of COBBLE has been released. It's now only 123kb, 88% smaller than the previous version. New features include faster coloring, the ability to share, and a chat window.

Background

COBBLE stands for COllaBorative Board game Learning Environment. It is a Toolkit for exploring Finite Mathematics. Finite mathematics encompasses the topics of probability, combinatorics, set theory, and propositional logic and game theory, and tackles questions such as “How likely is it that I will win the lottery?” “How many ways can seven people make use of two cars to go to the movies given that each car can hold at most 5 people?” and “If 15 people like eggs or ham, 4 like only eggs, and 7 like only ham, how many like both eggs and ham?” Finite mathematics is increasingly being taught as modules in elementary and middle school mathematics courses, enabling students to reason about probability and counting.

COBBLE is an environment where students can easily create objects such as a deck of cards, urns full of colored marbles, or 6, 8 and 20-sided die, grids for chess/checkers boards, game tokens, as well as add their own custom-designed mathematical objects. They can then use these objects to explore the resulting mathematical properties, which will be calculated automatically by COBBLE.

COBBLE can be seen as a game system, where we provide the pieces, and you provide the rules. Our goal is to make COBBLE as flexible as possible, so that users can play any game just by interacting with the objects and chatting about the rules in the chatbox.

Functionality

The Dice Menu is up and running. Users can create 6 or 20 sided die at the click of a button, or choose the Custom Die Menu. Here, the user can choose the color and sides of the die.

Created die are randomly dropped on the screen. To roll the die, hover the mouse and hit the space bar.

Tested on laptops from G1G1 build.

Games

The following dice games are playable through COBBLE:

Farkle Pig Ship Captain and Crew Chuck-a-luck
