The “ Papillon ” [“Butterfly”] educational concept is a free learning method which grows with knowledge like a living organism, creates, uses, reuses and improves continuesly new things. Imaginative multimedia learning environments are offered and depicted in an initial online school book [1] with this educational content. A concept that connects worlds; multimedia, intercultural and interdisciplinary as well as classical education and New Media — intelligently networked!

The Papillon method works on the base of keywords and transforms teaching books into a huge dynamic ecosystem of knowledge. Gifted students and less gifted will be promoted together.

This completely new digital learning method allows children to see our world in a global context, fosters an alert creative spirit as well as analytical abilities, teaches playful learning and motivates students to develop their own ideas, [2]and can also provide help for self-help in the best sense. In addition, the project not only imparts knowledge, but also forms the entire personality. Students and teachers work together in an educational network. Papillon is one example for new paths of imparting knowledge in the 21. Century.

Today the digitization of our world is as significant as the invention of the alphabet. Therefore promotes "Papillon" the imparting of media literacy as a key cultural techniques of the 21st Century, because digital technology will mean a fundamental change in our perception.

Sociologist John W. Meyer [3] is the opinion that it gradually comes to a connection of national education systems towards to a kind of global education apparatus, and finally "to a high degree of internationalization of educational content both in general as well in higher education and to a wide dissemination of the educational definition of the world as a common humankind and common living space".

Architecture of the educational concept "Papillon"

The architecture of the educational concept is based on narration and interaction. The hybrid system combines the advantages of static and dynamic representation of contents.

Level of narration

Classes need pictures and stories which stay in mind to show brittle, abstract contents in a vivid and understandable way. Therefore virtual characters are included into the real learning process. They represent various attitudes and behaviour. Their contrary opinions include learners in the discussion and enable an educational entrance due to dialogue. The applied narrative structure is suitable for controverse dialogues.

Fairy tales are interculturally. They can be build about all cultures golden bridges of understanding.

Open Books, Open Doors – How to Promote Reading [4] Read to a Million Kids [5]

Promoting Reading is Everyone’s Obligation

Literacy is a basic right. It is a fundamental condition for being part of today's knowledge societies. Literacy is a key to reduce poverty and increase economic opportunities.[6]

Level of interaction

In the process of the narrative a thematic orientation will be recommended which will allow a 3-dimensional view on the topical focus through the merger of book and internet. It will also help to develop networked and multifunctional thinking. Seemingly diverse themes will be linked into a unique interdisciplinary universe of knowledge and due to the level of narration knowledge will be produced multimedia-based. This system of komplex universal spirit allows children to see our world in a global context, fosters an alert creative mind as well as analytical abilities, teaches playful learning and motivates students to develop their own ideas.

The narrative keeps the priority even when the learner follows his/her thematic interest.

“Playing and learning are two sides of the same coin. If one side is omitted, the development is insufficient“, opines Prof. Vassilios Fthenakis [7], a renowned pedagogy scholar and Professor for Developmental psychology and anthropology at the Free University of Bolzano Italy. Therefore, play-related elements should be integrated more into the formally organised learning process in order to challenge the students to the proper extent [8].

Delimitation to conventional methods

The learning concept presents a new way of conception of contents which differs fundamentally from traditional learning methods and the already known e-learning. It goes way beyond pure e-learning-usage and outlines a contrast towards the known click and pick. The space of knownledge will be flexible shaped by the virtual world. In todays e-learning-usage learners can often get forward only page by page or navigate at most via the fixed structure of the index. But exploratory learning, the discovery of the contents over its coherences fails because of missing links. To tie contextual links among and between study units offers in this method the possibility to provide flexibly linked information due to an attractive concept. Widely scattered information are ordered by theme and are brought into a coherent form.

The advantage reaches to the emotional and motivating effects which are generated due to the identification with the characters, the exciting narrative level and the variety of themes of the active level. With this kind of learning can be planted the germ of curiosity in the students. Lerning results and motivation will be achieved when knowledge coherences are exploit and this exploration can be repeated self-dependent by the learner.

The Butterfly method is not about searching on the Internet. It's about using the Internet to learn.

Principle

Papillon [Butterfly] is the name and the principle of the educational concept. Butterflies represent metamorphosis and change. Their flutter from flower to flower is a symbol of the central principle: “multiple interlinking” because everything is connected in our global world. "Children must be given the opportunity to view a certain aspect from different perspectives. This is how they learn the same content in all of its complexity and learn in the process that different perspectives can result in different assessments.” Prof. Vassilios Fthenakis [9] The principle is based on an interdisciplinary and narrative presentation of knowledge. By merging seemingly oppositional themes such as nature and culture, art and science, tradition and new media, book and internet grows an interdisciplinary universe of knowledge. Just like a butterfly students are able to leave the classroom to learn in fascinating multimedia worlds, without being limited by time or space. Papillon knowledge spaces are experienced emotionally, socially and creative. The lessons will be easier, more interesting and stimulates the networked thinking. Papillon makes the lessons come alive and inspires students to explore the secrets of the vast universe of knowledge.

Book

Reading is the most important prerequisite for learning success. Therefore the GOLD DUST story is the heart of the dynamic teaching and learning concept. It promotes reading motivation, language skills, creativity and imagination. In addition, relates the fantastic story their unique magic through combination from book and Internet. The book will be the onlinebook and thus an experience.

The story of Prince Aron of Nubia, the hero of the GOLD DUST adventure, is full of unusual ideas and surreal images which are “drawn” with the word. A tale full of fantasy with a real-life background which still keeps children occupied for a long time. It is linked to two other parts and the GOLD DUST constellation is developed as a trilogy.

Fairy tales [10] convey a simple basic thought: A good character makes you beautiful. It is exactly the right format to spin a yarn about the great questions of life.

Children like to read fairy tales and understand them without problems. They are certainly the most beautiful stories in the world. Their material has everything great and beautiful within it. Fairy tales are the mirror reflection of the human soul. We can re-find ourselves in them. Because fairy tales are a common cultural heritage of all of the people in the world, we encounter each other through their language of symbols even across borders. Fairy tales convey to us a magical world through which the children can easily distinguish between the rules and rituals of reality, good and evil. They are an appropriate means of evoking fantasy and creativity and thereby promote the moral and social competence to make judgments.

Dan Ariely, MIT Media Lab [11] "Predictably Irrational",[12] Chapter 11: The Context of Our Character, Part I: Why We Are Dishonest, and What We Can Do about It) [13] has scientifically demonstrated that the mere thought of a moral authority promotes honesty [14]. “The most important human endeavor,” Albert Einstein wrote, “is striving for morality.” Currently we have no crisis in the world markets but a crisis of character [15] [16] Mahatma Gandhi: Commerce without morality [17]

Oliver Wetter's work was chosen to be the cover of the fantasy story “GOLD DUST” that is part of the education concept “Papillon”. He doneted the piece: „The source“.

Online Book

The online schoolbook "GOLD DUST" develops out of the fantasy story "GOLD DUST", the core of the digital teaching concept "Papillon".

The digital textbook is a combination of grand adventure, magical effects and global learning. To see our world with different eyes and share the knowledge is what the educational concept "Papillon" wants to present.

The Application example [18]shows how to implement the “Papillon” method and how the prototyp transforms into a highly interactive component and unique experience.

With the emotional Papillon-concept to learn means more fun and intensive learning because it is interactive[19]and adapted to the 21st century [20].
