What I do for the OLPC
I am currently editing and formatting the Simple_User_Guide. I appear to be the resident Speex guy. I am also helping Colingo with their encoding process. I am also very frequently working on and for grassroots tasks. Organizing grassroots groups, and responding to an awful lot of grassroots emails. I have many other projects that I am working, but none of them are happening today (12-12-07).
- I am working on mostly non-technical aspects of the project. Mostly the processing of material and volunteering for somewhat related projects. I have a very strong interest in Social Media and I would like to leverage that for the community if possible.
Stop-motion
The on-board camera of the OLPC (xo) needs killer applications. It has great video chat and picture taking abilities. But I think that needs an external project to be captured by the xo. I am working on creating a very simple how-to walking children through basic stop motion animation, using materials they should have in their communities. An admin from the wonderful WikiHow has offered her services on this, so the project will probably be hosted there and then ported to the OLPC.
- I was just thinking of something similiar earlier today. "xoWebcam" -- Linux 'xawtv'/webcam package sugarized w/GUI. It's got frame capture capabilities built in, with total control of 'motion activated' and sequencing. Just need to find a good/lite package for putting frames into a movie format :-) --Ixo 01:29, 16 January 2008 (EST)

- Perhaps expand Animation#Stop_Motion? Also, a while back I saw something about a Pippy python example which took a single picture - might be something to easily build on. MitchellNCharity 08:54, 18 February 2008 (EST)
- Yes, a good pippy example 'picture?' about grabbing an image and rotating it. So all the code is there, just have to build on it a but, and sugarize it. --00:56, 19 February 2008 (EST)
- re: killer applications - Did you see OpenCV? This might be exactly useful for creating killer webcam apps. It's basically a open source image recognition library developed by intel - and has all the features: Object identification, Face recognition, Motion tracking, Gesture recognition, ... Librivox
I have volunteered for Librivox previously and really love their project. Not many people seem to be getting the Librivox recordings ready for the OLPC so I am starting to work on this. The materials need to be transcoded into Speex and trimmed as small as possible to save space. I hope to have some serious speex-fu by the time I'm done.
French as a First Foreign Language FAAFFL
I am in contact with a French professor from Slovenia who has material to contribute to the OLPC. I am going to assist him in moving his existing work over to wikibooks, where it can be added to existing material. When the immediate material is processed, there should be about half a year of First Year French. I'm not sure, but I think it will end up being for a middleschool or highschool audience.
Once it is mostly complete at wikibooks, it can be picked up and placed on the OLPC (how I'm not sure, but people in-the-know have told me so).
Flickr
Flickr is a social media site for the display and sharing of digital pictures. There is a need to see what from that vast repository of photos (many with a Creative Commons -by license) could make it to the OLPC. I've started a group [1] that will eventually be the home of this project, although what form it may take I'm not sure.
T-Shirts
A need has been expressed for some tshirt designs. I would like to mock up a few proposals and hopefully someone will use them: Image:Shirt_10_million.png
This wiki
I also try keep this wiki up to date. Right now I am working on putting obx templates on activities pages and keeping an eye out for vandalism and misplaced pages.
= Social Media
Several avenues of social media could be leveraged for support of the OLPC. A myspace user could be created that reposts community news via bulletins and serves as a Trendy method of showing support (see CC's myspace). A simple Facebook application could be created that RSS a feed of OLPC news, or a RSS feed of new OLPC photos. And Flickr could be leveraged as a Meme or as a content source.
Social media could be used to spread the word via Myspace bulletin memes and/or livejournal memes. Memes are self replecating ideas such as forwards or personal surveys that are passed on to one's friends. This isn't a very good description, but I will try to propose it later on when other projects are more fully formed.

- Get a hold of someone on en.wikibooks about processing FAAFFL (french as a first foreign language)
