Contents vs/ weight

2 x 50 lbs. 40 XOs. XOs weigh about 3 1/4 lb apiece. If they are part of this, you're already overweight. Rmyers 18:58, 15 June 2008 (EDT)

School server in a box

I recall some discussion of using an XO as a small school server. If that's so -

  • external hard drive with XS image
  • active antenna

If not, what about a mini, nano or pico-itx box school server. The XSX_Server_Implementation actually specifies a mini-itx form factor mother board.

I haven't tried this, but can an XO be used as a terminal to another linux box? If so, there's the console for the XS. Rmyers 19:10, 15 June 2008 (EDT)

  • I successfully connected to a couple of machines (linux, darwin) from my XO using ssh. So an XO should be able to be used as a console on a headless XS. I know this probably qualifies as 'stupid linux tricks' but I hadn't tried it. Rmyers 15:50, 17 June 2008 (EDT)

Ask the pilots

Has anyone asked User:Leeming of OLPC_Oceania or other pilot leads, like Bryan Berry of OLE Nepal about what they most wish they had in a box when they started their pilots? Cjl 23:38, 17 June 2008 (EDT)

assuming every child and teacher (40 kids max, 1 teacher min - demographic we're designing 
for) has a working XO already; no need to ship spares, but we should put a doa to take 
apart and we should put in screwdrivers, debating about whether to include a printed repair guide

seth: are printed manuals really more accessible than digital ones?
chris: and are we sending the wrong message by not distributing everything digitally?
seth: we need to get people used to using our iwki
mike: is there an out-of-box, out-of-bag experience we want to promote?
mel: can we brainstorm before we sink into implementation, please?
dan: alternative power!

seth: we could put water purification tablets in there
