I work in a Faculty of Education with prospective teachers, and co-conduct a large initiative called the Remote Networked Classroom ( http://www.eer.qc.ca ) in rural Quebec. For over ten years I have been a participant observer of a student-owned laptop program in a secondary school. The school-within-a-school program was built out of the professional development school model (PDS) where practice teaching merges with professional development, and the latter with collaborative research.

The TACT community ( http://wiki.laptop.org/go/TACT ) is a virtual community that is the result of interconnected learning communities, communities or practice, and knowledge building communities. It is devoted to the identification of Technology for Advanced forms of Collaboration among Teachers. And the XO is becoming central to our endeavour.
