Summary of pre-primary Schools (Kindergartens) in South Korea

For full information, visit here and click the Excel file attached.

  • At the end of 2006', there are 8,455 kindergartens, 545,812 chidren, 23,010 classes, 6,470 office workers and 32,096 teachers. We estimate there should be an extra OLPC per 500 children and per 100 teachers. So, we need (545,812 x 100.5% = ) about 600,000 OLPC(hild)s at minimum, and (6,470 + 32,096 = 192,353) x 101%= about 40,000 Type III OLPC(itizen)s.
  • As this OLPC wiki estimates one server per 100 OLPCs, we may need 23,010 servers. However, there are some schools whose students are less than 100, a little more servers more will be needed, maybe 25,000 servers.
  • Estimated budget: 193 million dollars at minimum

Sub-total: we needs 193 million dollars for 600,000 kindergarten children' machines.

  • At the end of 2006', there are 6,280 primary schools, 3,925,043 students, 127,161

classes, 28,708 office workers and 163,645 teachers. We estimate there should be an extra OLPC per 500 children and per 100 teachers. So, we need (3,925,043 x 100.5% = ) 3,948,669 OLPC(hild)s at minimum, and (28,708 + 163,645 = 192,353) x 101%= 211,589 OLPC(itizen)s. For approximation, we need 4 million OLPCs for primary school children and 212,000 OLPCs for teachers/office workers.

  • As this OLPC wiki estimates one server per 100 OLPCs, we may need 39,200 servers. However, there are some schools whose students are less than 100, a little more servers more will be needed, maybe 40,000 servers.
  • Estimated budget: 477.44 million dollars at minimum

Subtotal: 475 million dollars at minimum for primary school children's machines.

The secondary educational system of South Korea consists of the two different system, a middle school (3 years) and a high school (3 years).

There are about 3,851,168 secondary students (13~18 years old) in South Korea (Dec.2006). we hope to distribute OLPC national-wide from 2009, but for 2008' only some of them will receive their OLPCs. See School list for detailed information about schools in South Korea (Korean character).

Summary of middle Schools in South Korea

For full information, visit here and click the Excel file attached.

  • At the end of 2006', there are 3,051 middle schools, 2,075,311 students, 58,771 classes, 12,092 office workers and 106,919

teachers. We estimate there should be an extra OLPC per 500 students and per 100 teachers. So, we need (2,075,311 x 100.5% = ) 2,086,688 Type II OLPC(itizen)s at minimum, and (12,092 + 106,919 = 119,011) x 101%= 120,202 Type III OLPC(itizen)s. For approximation, we need 2,087,000 Type II OLPCs for middle school students and 120,200 Type III OLPCs for teachers/office workers.

  • As we expect One Server per Class, we need 58,771 servers. However, there are some schools whose students are less than 100, a little more servers more will be needed, maybe servers.
  • Estimated budget: 294,606,000 dollars at minimum

Summary of high Schools in South Korea

We estimate there should be an extra OLPC per 500 students and per 100 teachers. So, we need (494,349 x 100.5% = ) 496,821 Type II OLPC(itizen)s at minimum, and (5,362 + 36,750 = 42,112) x 101%= 42,534 Type III OLPC(itizen)s. For approximation, we need 487,000 Type II OLPCs for occupational training high school students and 43,000 Type III OLPCs for teachers/office workers.
  • As we expect One Server per Class, we need 16,556 servers. However, there are some schools whose students are less than 100, a little more servers more will be needed, maybe 17,000 servers.
  • Estimated budget: about 72,387,000 dollars at minimum

High schools for preliminary college education

  • At the end of 2006', there are 1,437 high schools for preliminary college education, 1,281,508 students, 38,034 classes, 7,947 office workers and 81,183 teachers. We estimate there should be an extra OLPC per 500 students and per 100 teachers. So, we need (1,281,508 x 100.5% = ) 1,287,916 Type II OLPC(itizen)s at minimum, and (7,947 + 81,183 = 89,130) x 101%= 90,022 Type III OLPC(itizen)s. For approximation, we need 1,288,000 Type II OLPCs for high schools for preliminary college education and 90,100 Type III OLPCs for teachers/office workers.
  • As we expect One Server per Class, we need 38,034 servers. However, there are some schools whose students are less than 100, a little more servers more will be needed, maybe 38,100 servers.
  • Estimated budget: about 190,583,000 dollars at minimum

Subtotal: we need at least 558 million dollars for middle or high school students.'

XO Korea is developing ONLY a game: XO City, & NO relation with the OLPC Foundation.

The college educational system of South Korea consists of the two different system, undergraduate courses (3~4 years) and graduate courses (1~5 years).

Summary of undergraduate courses in South Korea

For full information, visit here and click the Excel file attached.

  • At the end of 2006', there are 335 colleges(or universities), 3,255,745 students, 19,322 courses, 38,456 office workers and 67,211 professors(or instructors). We estimate there should be an extra OLPC per 100 citizens. So, we need (3,255,745 x 101% = ) about 3,510,000 Type III OLPC(itizen)s at minimum and 110,000 Type III OLPCs for instructors/office workers.
  • As we expect One Server per Class, we need 80,000 servers. However, there are some courses whose students are less than 100, a little more servers will be needed.
  • Estimated budget: 480,300,000 dollars at least.

Summary of graduate schools in South Korea

At the end of 2006', there are and 1,436 graduate colleges

Master degrees

There are 9,259 master degree courses and 243,833 students. So, we need (243,833 x 101% = ) about 246,000 Type III OLPC(itizen)s at minimum, and about 10,000 servers.

  • Estimated budget: about 81,000,000 dollars at minimum

Doctoral degree

There are 3,596 doctoral courses and 46,196 students. So, we need (46,196 x 101% = ) about 47,000 Type III OLPC(itizen)s at minimum, and about 4,000 servers.

  • Estimated budget: about 7,110,000 dollars at minimum

Subtotal: we need at least 558.41 million dollars for middle or (under)graduate students.' The number of special purpose schools and enrolled students are 142 and 23,394 respectively. Because most of them are for disabled children, we need to redesign OLPC to be proper to each type of disability.

We need some help from experts of education for the disabled children.
