The Project: Animal Kingdom
This is a project aiming to teach Grade 1 and Grade 2 students of India about Animals in an audio/visual way. The project is being run by OLPC India Student Chapter.
Concept of Teaching Animals & Similar Things
The technique followed is to show image of one animal to the child at a time. When the child hovers the pointer on the image of the animal, he will listen the sound characteristic of that animal. After that the child will listen how the name of the animal is pronounced and how to write that name.
So this project is teaching the following in just one step:
- How does the animal look like?
- How does it sound?
- How to pronounce its name?
- How to write its name?
Special Care has been taken to compress images so that no image is more than 30 kb in size and average image size is about 18-20 kb.
We plan to make a website which is to be accessed through the Browse Activity. But it is not intended to upload the website on the Internet. Instead, modules like animals, flowers, colours, etc. can be kept on the School server and according to the daily course the teacher can share the content bundle with the students so that internet connectivity is not a hurdle (Though an online version can still be made available).

The project is still in initial phase and our team will release & recommend to use it on XO when there is a significant improvement.
