[ PROJECT #1 - Steppe by Steppe / Side by Side - Kazakhstan, Australia ]

<CanoeBerry> Please all critique/mentor/vote for Project #1 here:
<CanoeBerry> 1. Steppe by Steppe / Side by Side - Kazakhstan, Australia
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=60323
<CanoeBerry> http://www.steppebysteppe.com.au/schools.html
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 10 XOs over 12 months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> ...Our aim is that by providing access to [OLPC] resources in remote
<CanoeBerry> villages, will allow the students to expand their educational
<CanoeBerry> prospects without having to leave their village, traditional
<CanoeBerry> lifestyle, village traditions and customs, or family, for the city –
<CanoeBerry> something which the community often finds very damaging in this
<CanoeBerry> rapidly changing and globalised world.
<CanoeBerry> Throughout our project, we have visited many schools in very remote
<CanoeBerry> rural areas, these schools are often very under resourced – lacking
<CanoeBerry> sporting equipment, proper toilets, libraries and many other
<CanoeBerry> facilities that we ourselves take for granted today. Adequate phone
<CanoeBerry> lines/reception is often non-existent in these areas also – let alone
<CanoeBerry> the internet. Most people in these remote villages have never even
<CanoeBerry> seen a computer, let alone used the internet.
<CanoeBerry> In these rural areas (where hardly anyone has seen a computer), there
<CanoeBerry> are very limited prospects for further education. We hope that by
<CanoeBerry> providing a few laptops, internet access (along basic training) and
<CanoeBerry> software, to a school, we can increase their chances of continued
<CanoeBerry> higher education. Access to global information will greatly enhance
<CanoeBerry> their awareness, understanding, and knowledge of the larger community
<CanoeBerry> that we are all apart of, resulting in greater empowerment at both a
<CanoeBerry> communal and personal level, thus greatly increasing their
<CanoeBerry> developmental prospects.
<CanoeBerry> Our other goal is to partner each participating school in Kazakhstan
<CanoeBerry> to a sister school in Australia, it will allow students in these
<CanoeBerry> distant regions of the world to learn and grow together with open
<CanoeBerry> minds. This can only be done however once these schools have access to
<CanoeBerry> the internet (and thus telephone lines, electricity, and computers).
<CanoeBerry> The partnered schools will then be able to keep in regular contact
<CanoeBerry> with each other, learning about each others traditions, lifestyle, and
<CanoeBerry> culture...
<CanoeBerry> Alright, apologies for the long proposal!
<CanoeBerry> Reflections & observations from anyone here please...
<CanoeBerry> This group has done a lot of homework, but needs mentoring.
<CanoeBerry> I just sent them a quick email note for clarification.

<CanoeBerry> Asking how they're implementing OLPC's 5 Principles..
<CanoeBerry> They're on the ball.

<CanoeBerry> Anybody here give a damn about Kazakhstan? :)
<CanoeBerry> IE care to mentor just a bit to get this team oriented :)

[ PROJECT #6 - eBook creation and sharing website - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ]

<CanoeBerry> Onto Project #6 -- plz all critique/mentor/vote for:
<CanoeBerry> eBook creation and sharing website - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=60582
<CanoeBerry> [SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]
<CanoeBerry> Requests 0 XOs
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> The purpose of the project is to support the development of a
<CanoeBerry> creative and compassionate young people to fight and win the war of poverty.
<CanoeBerry> (1) To allow children (6-12) in developing countries to freely
<CanoeBerry> express themselves in the form of creative writing. The website provides
<CanoeBerry> a space for creative expressions to be shared by anyone anywhere. No
<CanoeBerry> cost for posting. All submission will be copyright free.
<CanoeBerry> (2) To allow children in developed countries to listen to what
<CanoeBerry> children with other cultures have to say. Readers from outside the
<CanoeBerry> developing world can download the ebook to their
<CanoeBerry> ipad/ipod/iphone/laptop/desktop etc. The books will be sold for $0.99
<CanoeBerry> per download. Once downloaded, it is free to distribute to friends,
<CanoeBerry> classmates and families.
<CanoeBerry> (3) All proceeds, after expenses, will be directed to OLPC project to
<CanoeBerry> send more laptops to children in LDC. No money will be forwarded to the
<CanoeBerry> children to avoid abuse.
<CanoeBerry> Note: The creative writing of a 6-12 years old will not be a "full
<CanoeBerry> book" as what we usually understood. It will be something like a bedtime
<CanoeBerry> reading to your kids with stories and pictures. When editing, a web link
<CanoeBerry> can be added to show more contents. Therefore, keep in mind that ebook
<CanoeBerry> here refers to creative writing from a 6-12 years old.
<CanoeBerry> Measurement of objectives:
<CanoeBerry> (1) Against objective #1, the number of creations posted in the
<CanoeBerry> website. The source and diversity of the creation will also be a good
<CanoeBerry> indicator of depth of the project.
<CanoeBerry> (2) Against objective #2, the number of downloads is primary
<CanoeBerry> indicator. Since there is no copyright and transfer restrictions, the
<CanoeBerry> download figure will be an underestimate of true circulation.
<CanoeBerry> (3) Against objective #3, the amount of contributions from the
<CanoeBerry> project to OLPC will be used.
<CanoeBerry> Out of breath yet?  :)
<sandrat> Cool .. who came up with this. good strategic thinking
* sj_ Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
<CanoeBerry> Applicant requests ADVICE not hardware.
<bemasc> ADVICE: join sugar-devel
<CanoeBerry> Please weigh in, considering his thoughtful proposal.
<sandrat> I'll try and mentor.
<CanoeBerry> bemasc: applicant is a business person :)
* IdeoIdeo Quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (Ping timeout))
<culseg> reads well-intended, for sure encourage, IRC may not be the best forum for developing and nuturing
<GrannieB> so the 99 cents is to defray expenses of running the website?
<CanoeBerry> FYI I had a phone call with this individual early this week and will continue trying to work with him later this month..
<sandrat> There are a lot of questions this brings up that we should think thru... not sure we shouldn't give it some time
<GrannieB> this could be self-sustaining once it gets going
<CanoeBerry> Applicant is committed to "Robin Hood" transfer of funds from rich countries to poor -- I've asked him to find ways to balance this with OLPC Principles #5 regarding e-books from kids which should in general be remixable rather than copyrighted too strictly:
<CanoeBerry> http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Core_principles
<GrannieB> they should set up an NGO first though if they will be charging for downloads
<CanoeBerry> In any case, please attach your comments to the Project Page!
<CanoeBerry> http://rt.laptop.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=60582
<CanoeBerry> MOTION: we all love creative writing :)
<CanoeBerry> Objections?
<CanoeBerry> I hated creative writing as a kid.. but ah well I'm growing up ;)
<CanoeBerry> Shall we?
<GrannieB> with mentoring and help setting up an NGO before they collect any download fees +1
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<sandrat> it is great idea, but to deploy the business model requires a lot of back room resources
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<CanoeBerry> CONCLUSION: let's get creative :)

<CanoeBerry> Requests 5+ XOs over indefinite months
<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> Looking to develop a summer program for the students at the São João
<CanoeBerry> School
<CanoeBerry> so that they can continue using their laptops during the summer months.
<CanoeBerry> This program will focus on teaching the Etoys activity, providing
<CanoeBerry> computer
<CanoeBerry> repair classes, providing ebooks in Portuguese, and evaluating the
<CanoeBerry> academic
<CanoeBerry> year and its use of XO laptops with teachers. Breakfast or lunch will be
<CanoeBerry> provided to students as well.
<sandrat> mentoring .. communication is important here, it is a great plan that we should find a way to support
<CanoeBerry> The goals of the computer repairs portion of the summer program
<CanoeBerry> include:
<CanoeBerry> - Teaching children and teachers how to fix their own computers using
<CanoeBerry> limited
<CanoeBerry> supplies
<CanoeBerry> - Seeding the development and expansion of a community repair center
<CanoeBerry> in São
<CanoeBerry> Tomé e Príncipe, hopefully serving as a potential repairs hub for
<CanoeBerry> future
<CanoeBerry> OLPC programs around the country
<CanoeBerry> - Allowing for the current program to be even more sustainable and not
<CanoeBerry> reliant on overseas help, especially when teachers do not speak English
<CanoeBerry> and are unable to seek live assistance online in their native language
<CanoeBerry> (Portuguese)
<CanoeBerry> - Putting more emphasis on the OLPC wiki as an educational resource for
<CanoeBerry> students and teachers, not just for computer repair but for other
<CanoeBerry> questions and procedures.

<CanoeBerry> Project Objectives:
<CanoeBerry> [Requestor is experienced & enthusiastic hardware/kernel hacker]
<kjcole> Bit thin on the details...
<CanoeBerry> +1 to this humble individual who practically created our Support Gang in the early days, mentoring many..
<CanoeBerry> Sorry for the lack of details yes.
<kjcole> In that case... +1
<CanoeBerry> Will ask him to beef up his results.
<GrannieB> +1
<CanoeBerry> Note this individual recently moved from Memphis, TN
<CanoeBerry> Calling once..
<CanoeBerry> Calling twice..
<CanoeBerry> Calling thrice..
<cjb> CanoeBerry: is there an example of his hardware work somewhere?
<cjb> (I don't see his name in the kernel commits anywhere.)
<CanoeBerry> cjb: good question, he's been more of a tech support guy getting repair centers up to speed etc, but i will ask
<cjb> anyway, probably not important. if he does have hardware experience, that would be good to know.
<CanoeBerry> APPROVED!

<GrannieB> One note ... if the picture on the contrib project page with the classroom full of xos was changed maybe people would stop asking for 50? :)
* kjcole has left #olpc-meeting ("Konversation terminated!")
<CanoeBerry> GrannieB: change the picture to show 1-million XOs so everyone understand saturation :)
* alexanderpirdy  has left #olpc-meeting
<GrannieB> Don't know how to change picture... but might be able to create a "saturation" photo in Photoshop with lots of "clones" ;)
<GrannieB> let me know and I'll do it in my "spare time" (what's that?)
<GrannieB> bye... Ryan form La Sierra U will be here in an hour or 2. Got to get the Roadshow M-stock machines ready to go
