Learningteammeetings
Meeting Edward, Julian, and Edith - Wednesday, December 6.
1. We opened a space on “wiki.laptop.org” especially dedicated to the olpc learning meetings. This should help us keep track of what we are doing and share our progress. We encourage all members of the extended learning team to regularly check on the URL and add reflection s, suggestions , contributions.
- take note of the URL: wiki.laptop.org/go/learningteammeetings - We'll post instructions on how to enter text & images on wiki
2. We are setting up a mechanism to help xo users share cool projects, tricks, and inspirational materials, in ways useful to newcomers. As mentioned in a previous note, a person unfamiliar with the laptop should be able to safely explore its offerings and immediately get a feel for simple-yet-delightful things they can do right away. Better yet: they are guided by others who tried before! Here is what we got so far.
We have the beginning of a working-prototype, in the form of an interactive photo representation of the laptop [pic below]. As users hover over features [on machine] and menu options [on screen], each unveils what they are about [name / function]. More to the point from a learning perspective, each hints at how they can be used to do cool things [link to cards with project ideas]. Think of cards as invitations to try out things, with guidines on how to get there. Each invitation, once selected, offers additional options, like see what others have done / more things to try / yes, you can do it [ step-by-step instructions]…

3. In addition to evolving the tool (a), we are getting precious input from youngsters at the TEACH2LEARN project: The kids are right now producing materials to help one another do things using xo [you met the group during Mel King and Edward Baafi’s presentation]. Even at this early stage, we can see how the kids’ ideas will help improve the tool and how the tool, once built, will help kids improve their teachings : participatory design at its best! Build the tools you use. Use the tools you build :)
