A bridge is a device that transmits or (perhaps selectively) retransmits signals between two or more otherwise isolated media. Typical examples include solder-points between previously disjoint wires, canals between bodies of water, and access points that bridge wifi and wired media. Bridges don't modify the payloads of the messages that they're transmitting.
