We plan to distribute the computers to children from ages 6-12 (1st-8th grades). We will plan to distribute 30 computers for grades 1-4 and the rest for the remaining grades 5-8. We will be giving special preference to the 7th and 8th graders since they are about to exit the school and we want to maximize their knowledge and skill before they leave. Plus we also think this is a special group since all the students in this group are proficient in both written and spoken English and will have no problem understanding and applying the skills that we will teach them. We also believe that these students should be computer literate before they join high school. A significant number of kids form this school usually drop out of school when they complete their primary education instead of proceeding to High school. We hope and believe that by giving them the chance to own and learn to use the computers, they will become more interested in education and will want to proceed beyond primary school, to high school then to college. The teachers and parents have agreed to collaborate with such that when the normal schoo program ends at 3pm, the children will participate in the program instead of going home. We will run the program form 3-6pm on Tuesday and Thursdays, and from 5-7pm of Mon, Wed and Fri. The two hours from 3-5 on Mon, Wed and Friday is to allow the children to participate in the normal school sports and clubs. Parents have also agreed to let the children participate in the program on weekends. This year’s holiday starts on July and ends in August, just a perfect timing for the program. We will conduct the program for five hours a day during this period. We also create, or even better, let the children create blogs where they can communicate with each other and with the peers worldwide. The blogs will allow them share ideas, solve problems together, collaborate on homework and program projects. Towards the ened of the summer program, we will host a competition covering all the aspects of the XO laptop. We will also have them present to the whole village group projects on topics of their own choosing and level of comfort, during which we will them host a passing over ceremony to graduate them to the next level (which will mostly consist of independent work).
