I'd recommend shipping Scratch or Alice on the computer instead of just Anjuta.

I recently tested Storytelling Alice [1] with my 10 year old brother and it was a great success. All I had to do was show him how to get into the program and start the tutorial and he was up and running in no time. In fact, he likes it so much that our problem now is finding a way to get him to *stop* every night when it's time for bed.

[1] Unfortunately, Storytelling Alice is only available for Windows. Hopefully Alice 3.0, which incorporates new ideas from Storytelling Alice and runs on all platforms, will be out of beta soon.
