The GPS reciever could be potentially much more usefull than described.

For example, when taking a photo, the XO might log the GPS Position as well. Whena child shares the photo, others will beable to find the place easier.

Also, the GPS-Reciever might be usefull in building data to Map out WLAN quality vs. distance in relation to the terrain. Within a big mesh network (40+ or so), this might even be used in interesting science projects, because different materials alter/block signals in different ways...

The combination of GPS+Mesh Network will also be VERY usefull in coordinating rescue forces during an emergency or even a catastrophy.
