The ALAS Project

Our Mission:

To bring together the children of the U.S. and Latin America in the collaborative co-creation and enjoyment of advanced, open source language instruction software for the OLPC XO Laptop that will transform their lives and the world we share.

Our Model:

Experts in language instruction and computer programming create the core program. Modules include vocabulary games, structural games, spelling games, comprehension exercises, text chat, video chat, and storybook creator.

Students and teachers in participating classrooms in the U.S. provide English-language content for the modules for use by their Latin American sister schools.

Students and teachers in participating classrooms in Latin America provide Spanish-language content for the modules for use by their U.S. sister schools.

Students in sister schools on both sides of the language divide reach across borders to work in pair and group activities over the internet with native speakers of the language they are learning. Through real conversations and lasting friendships with native speakers, students grow in the mutual understanding and appreciation of their respective languages and cultures.
