I've successfully installed java on the XO. A detailed description of the installation is at [http://jmri.sourceforge.net/install/OLPC_XO.shtml my page] on installing JMRI (Java Model Railroad Interface) on the XO. A sketchier description, which I reference is [[RestrictedFormats|here]]. One limitation -- the java plugin does not work inside browse activity.
